I remain shocked that Japanese animation studios aren't tripping over themselves to have Polyphia do an intro to a show.

Misha is such an incredibly bright and well-spoken person. I love how he was able to compose and articulate his thoughts in a way that connected with everything we've all observed about Polyphia as fans. Especially their potential to bridge instrumental guitar music with pop, hip-hop, rap, and literally ANY genre of music. Misha was absolutely correct when he said the new Polyphia album is going to show us how far this music can actually go. Remember that it took 4 years for the G.O.A.T music video to reach 25 million views. It has taken Playing God only 2 months to reach 10 million. Tim has spoken about the material on the upcoming album, and from what we know it is INCREDIBLY diverse in the genres it covers. One song in particular which has been described as bubblegum pop is predicted by Tim to become their biggest song. I KNOW these guys are reaching out into as many different directions and genres as they can ON PURPOSE. They are casting a VERY WIDE net in order to bring as many people as they can into this beast of an ensemble they've created. It's like we're watching them about to start a wildfire, and none of us have any idea how far it will spread. As goofy as we may know them to be with their memeing and shitposting, the dudes in Polyphia are incredibly self-aware and are absolutely among the most intuitive musicians in the game right now. What they're doing is absolute genius.

I used to always wonder how I could blend crazy guitar with catchy hooks and beats but it was never able to do it myself…. Thanks for the insight from a professional guitarist perspective. I gave guitar a shot about 5 years ago at the age of 20~ with just about no experience with music (aside from 5th grade music class). I have always loved metal among other genres and thought I'd just learn the tabs to a few songs. After 2 or so weeks I dropped it due to difficulty and not really understanding the instrument. Recently learning about and listening to Polyphia has given me the second wind I needed to try again but with a plan. I understand it will take time and I am ready to give it that. Now with about a month of practice and a great friend teaching me, I am slowly making my way towards a basic understanding of the instrument and a little theory. If one day I can make my guitar sound close to theirs, I'll be quite happy. Love Misha's analysis as well
@chaz__

Misha is such an awesome guy. Really articulate speaker and definitely knows more than he's putting on. I remember the first time I heard a "Gjent" style track was on the end credits of Deus Ex Mankind Divided and it was fucking sick. Simple, very short but awesome. If they ever do a third game I hope to god they him to do the score. I think Tim Henson has said on a stream that their (Polyphia) new album has featured vocals both from rappers and pop artists. I think this is how Polyphia ends up exploding into the stratosphere in the future. Getting big names to feature on their tracks and featuring on chart-topping tracks. I recently looked here on RU-vid to find a decent example, found a remix of O.D./Homicide and it worked surprisingly well. At the end of the day you just can't deny the musicianship, it all comes together so well.
@GraemePuttock
@GraemePuttock 2 года назад
Polyphia have sucessfully approached the hiphop / guitar line technique from the other direction. Hiphop took samples of memorable melodies and fused them with catchy beats, and from what I've seen Tim bases his approach to guitar lines heavily around the beat and rhythmic meter and creates melodic lines in a similar way - almost programmatically - before adding all the flair. It's a really strong sound.
@jopetdevera
@jopetdevera 2 года назад
I just watched Tim Henson's videos on how the song O.D. and G.O.A.T. were made and you really see the hiphop influences on those songs. For G.O.A.T, it was the triplet flow. For O.D., he took a sample, then used an arpeggiator for it, which is really nice.

I've been watching a bunch of people (non-musical) react to the Playing God and I think Misha nailed it. As a long time musician Animals is technical brilliance but not very easy to tap your toe to. Polyphia is speaking a different language. Hard Rock Metal guys like it because we can hear the virtuosity and it's recognizable. While non-musicians hear a short catchy tune that has elements in it that they are familiar with.

I did pick up the guitar after playing Rock Band / Guitar Hero but that's purely anecdotal. If anything it did get young people to appreciate music from before their time and might have helped get a lot of people into music, for me and my friends it got us into classic rock and metal and for me it introduced me to the world of prog metal through bands like Dream Theater (classic) and Avenged Sevenfold (more modern metal intro band). Led me on a path of discovering a ton of weird, strange and interesting music and certainly helped get me where I'm today musically

I love instrumental music such as Polyphia makes, primarily because I like having something to listen to while I work. However, I don't have a job where I can listen to lyrics, because they are too distracting. I read/edit documentation and write reports, so lyrical music just doesn't work for me. This is so sublime and amazing, the work day goes by quickly! As to your reacting to new music, I love it. It is very meaningful to get successful musician's opinions of other's work. Keep on keeping on as far as I'm concerned!

I think Mr Mansoor hit the nail right on the head with the mixture of pop and hip hop, with some serious flexing and brilliant melodic hooks! Tim,Scottie, and company have definitely created a whole new sound ! Especially with the hip hop angle! I wonder how many times Mr Henson is asked by the hip hop community to use his music, lol.

i want to shout out whoever edited Misha's monologues ;) no shade, it's a lot to unpack and Misha made the points that needed to be made. I haven't picked up my guitar in a few years, i lost the zest for pursuing guitar music and Polyphia bring me so much joy with what they're doing. I feel like they're living and executing a dream I once had long ago; I hope they succeed in all the ways Misha postulated they could, they are hopefully paving the way for future musicians who want to pursue mastering their craft in a way that brings outward recognition for their effort.

Great reaction video - my only thing about Polyphia is that they aren't (to me, here, not saying for everyone), producing songs that I want to listen to over and over again. Partially because of a lack of vocals perhaps, or that it is so technical that makes listening while out on a walk or workout a bit more involved, if that makes sense. Love the band and the performances are beyond technically incredible, wish I could play 1/10th of how they play, and still watch them for the sheer mastery of the instrument.

I think the best band (imo) who are currently bridging that gap that Misha was talking about would be a band called Unprocessed, Manuel has a voice that fits into pop music but his guitar skills I would say is on par with Tim Henson, their songs are complex enough for the guitar nerds but their sound could fit into the pop side if they really wanted to, and the fact that Manuel can play such complex riffs while singing blows my mind, my friend calls them polyphia with vocals, if no one has ever heard of them I suggest songs like Fabulist, Dead Rose, Real (feat Polyphia) Portrait, and Candyland
