The anticipation is so good tho. Every week without a video, you just know its getting better. Waiting on part 4 of FF2 (ff4 in Japan). And we are into week two of the wait. I also LOVED that It was like more than a month or so 2 before he dropped Super Metroid! And I was just guessing what could be so epic to keep him working so long on an upload. Always worth the wait.
I had gotten Dragon Warrior II at a garage sale, came with everything but the box. I remember as a kid just taking the map outside and pretending to be a hero.

I don’t know how many hours I spent looking for Erdrick’s Shield in Dragon Warrior after I found it in the sequel. To my surprise, years later I learned it did not exist… I still want to know how this shield came to be… I think it’s a forgery!
Everyone knows that Erdrick used a greatsword, and _rules as written,_ you can't use a two-handed weapon and a shield at the same time. (Adjusts glasses.)
It's even more confusing if you look at Dragon Warrior 3. The sword, armor, and shield are legendary, but the best helmet is mass produced and sold at a shop in Rimuldar. And it's more confusing still, because in the later versions of DW3, Ortega's Helm is added. It is weaker than the Great Helm, but it resists status ailments, so which one a casual player beat the game with is a real tossup.
Fordged by the god (or goddess) rubis, later, just like the other sword and armor items were.. or at least blessed into 'being' Erdric's items after they were used by Erdric in DQ3. I'd like to think Ortega's Helmet became blessed into being Erdric's Helm..

As someone who beat this when I was young, I recall the struggle I had doing it. This run was completely CLEAN! Didn't know you could do a good bit of stuff here like the cursed item or Staff of Thunder tricks. Now I want to go back and play this again.
"Oh, juggalos. I knew it smelled like Faygo down here!" I laughed out loud in class. And i am a juggalo. Approved commentary right there. We'd totally have Faygo parties in the evil cave.
Oh and if you put in uHkd instead of TUT as Midenhall's name you still get no encounters but the remaining RNG after you save is MUCH nicer to the player lol. Didn't know if that was covered in the last part or not.
I still hate transitions because of this game. I didn't know it was 33%. That's nuts. Also Artho is the first casualty I've seen on this channel. Treasure chest not a garbage can!! HA HA HA HA!! Great video. It should be called "If you can just make it to Rhone." This is awesome.
Like you said at the end I was one of those who rented it. So I had to explore everything. Figuring out how to get in the final cave was very hard to figure out as a kid. Then to figure out how to get thru it was pretty much drove you crazy with the hard monster fights. With all those dead ends and drop thru floors. Kids these days so spoiled with there walk thrus.
I bought this game second hand when i was a teen, I had DW3 new, and wanted to get back to this one. luckily, the store i bought it from had the map and manual. it was like $20, one of their more expensive games, but def worth it

In dragon quest 3...I forgot the enemy name..but it's one of the hand ones like the goopis..but they summon granite titans..my record was a 77 min battle letting them keep summing the...I got over 3435000 xp and gained 20 levels it took forever
That's an old RPG grinding tactic called "harvesting". Great way to grind in DQ if you can't stand how cowardly metal enemies are, but it does get repetitive after a while.
I knew about the staff of thunder trick, and my brother did the two water flying clothes trick although he didn't tell me how to do it for my save file, the jerk. But I never knew about how to use cursed items. Thanks for this great guide to one of my favorite games from childhood.
I always did the staff of thunder trick. I first thought when I revisited the prison.. wait does that guy who respawn also drop the staff? No. but will he drop the staff if i .. sell the previous one? Safe. experiment.. yes, yes he did! Then I got the idea of two water flying clothes doing the same thing sorta and. .I just learned on my own, being lost, exploring and exploring again. Back then you see, we spent 100+ hours just.. playing a single game because we only got one to three new ones per year on birthdays and holidays.
As a collector I love this channel found it pretty much at the start and have been going through all the games right along with. So much fun playing through my childhood collection. It can become sort of daunting figuring out what to play sometimes with that many to choose from this channel has served as kind of a road map. I sure hope the Turbografx 16 and Sega master system gets some love too.
@@johngavalas74 it’s a criminally underrated system then and now. I’m glad I kept mine and all the games/cd and a turbo duo from back in the 80’s and 90’s. The US versions of everything are ridiculously expensive now because it didn’t sell a whole lot here in the states but you can get the Japanese versions of the systems and games super cheap because everywhere else it sold extremely well even out selling Nintendo and Sega for a few years in Japan. Both systems have 3 of the 4 best Zelda clones out there tb16 Neutopia I&II, sms golden axe warrior and you can kinda throw glovelius in there. The 4th is 3D Dot Game Heroes on the ps3 and is amazing.
This was a great walkthrough for such a difficult game! I’m impressed that you can script almost continuous commentary and still keep it so interesting for almost 4 hours. Very, very well done. Now on to DQ3! ;P

Back in the day, I didn't have a walkthrough guide for this game. I got stuck about 2/3 into the quest, gave up, and sold this game away. Now with your videos, I'm taking notes and typing in a walkthrough so that I can finally enjoy this game. I have this game on one of those NES multi-carts from China, so I can play it on original hardware :)
I hope you eventually do Dragon Warrior 3, even though it would be an enormous task. Especially because of how much customization is available through class changing. Oh, and play as a girl. There's a few dialog changes that are kinda cool.
DW3 is my favorite one. Id probably have to break that video up into at least 3 parts. There are multiple reasons to play as a girl. What does everyone think the best DW3 party is?
@@UCanBeatVideoGames The best is probably the traditional Hero, Soldier, Wizard and Pilgrim. But I personally love the Fighter and switch that for the Soldier. But I think the traditional team and changing the Wizard into a Sage is "mathematically" the best choice.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I usually grind like crazy to make the ultimate team. I currently have a team of three Fighters with all spells. And their stats were boosted by my seed-farming thieves. I spent forever farming IntSeeds before doing the final class change, since Fighters and Warriors gain 0MP on level ups. Without going too crazy, though? Probably a Cleric->Warrior, a Warrior->Cleric, and a Jester->Sage. Too bad Sages and Fighters take so much experience to level up. Oh, my favorite way to grind levels late game is to have someone with BeDragon equip the Starry Bracelet to double their speed. Then, summon monsters outside Rimuldar until you encounter several Liquid Metal Slimes. Have your fast character cast BeDragon, and your other party members cast SpeedUp. The dragon form has its own stats, and it will never outspeed the Liquid Metal Slimes on its own, but since SpeedUp will occur after transforming, you'll get a significant boost to speed and can spew fire before some of the Liquid Metal Slimes act. Of course, I played the GBC version, so I'm not sure if the mechanics are the same on the NES and SNES versions.
@@wesleyoldham4222 You sound like someone that would love the Hardtype hack of this game. It's awesome! The enemies are boosted but the Hero is slightly altered and it's a welcomed challenge increase to this game!
Bro.... Thank you for getting through this game. I know it can be a slog compared to the other Dragon Warriors. RPGs are my favorite videos you make, and now you're free to do 3 and 4, which are probably the best 1 and 2 games ever made for the NES. A fantastic lesser known side scroller NES game is Shatterhand. It's a short game, but pretty difficult. I'd be curious to see what path you end up taking.
Erdrick's Sword walked so that NFTs could run. Supposedly a super rare item with totally manufactured value with next to no REAL value in reality, both as a weapon (You can buy the dragon sword just by grinding in the ocean for about a half hour or so at about the same time) and it only sells for 2 bucks.
The Erdricks sword was such a throw away item in this game. Totally optional and totally outclassed later, to the point where missing it yields no real sense of loss. I hated that.
I just started noticing that Kylo is on almost all of the thumbnails. My favorites are the space helmet in Gradius, hanging out with Rush in Mega Man 3 and 4, and driving a tank in Jackal.
I love how in the credits music here you can hear bits of music that would later be used in other dragon Warrior games as well! For example 3:42:49 This clip was used as town music in dragon Warrior 4 but had some changes and additions.
@@bryanx0317 I used to record myself playing NES games on casette tapes and i would listen to the music for certain games thousands of times, so stuff like DW2 is so ingrained in my brain i can't help but hear stuff like this xD lol.
The maps, sheets etc were my favorite parts of these games, I swear I used to read the manuals, item and spell sheets etc more than I played the games lol.
Which is clearly how these early RPGs were meant to be played, both in deference to the hardware limitations of the time and as a rudimentary anti-piracy measure.
Great job. We all appreciate the work you do. Last week, on this channel, was the first time I'd heard that this game was difficult (compared to the others). Then I heard it again on another DQ site. I beat this game back in the day without a guide. The only part I thought was hard was the last floor of that cave, before you entered the plateau of Rhone. The monsters there, as well as in Rhone, felt like a huge difficulty spike. It was as though I had skipped a huge portion of the game and didn't level up. Of course, it was also on RU-vid that I first heard that 7th Saga was difficult as well. Another game I'd beat a few times, back in the day. One of my favorites. I was one of the few people I knew that loved these types of RPGs.
I know that this game is a classic, and I really appreciate all the work you put into your channel but how can we take seriously a game with an enemy called “graboopi”
Now that I think on it, this game reminds me of Mass Effect 2 (obviously DragonQuest is the OG). -There is an attack on an allied settlement (Moonbrook) -You assemble your team -You acquire a ship -You have to get an IFF (the Eye of Malroth) -You make a dangerous journey to the enemy’s unforgiving home base (Road to Rhone) -The final boss is not Harbinger but a Reaper (Hargon and Malroth)
Love these videos! One thing you didn't point out (cosmetic, so not important, but interesting to note) is that the shrine where you find the Helmet of Erdrick is the one south of Rimuldar. And you can always tell when you're in Alefgard, because you hear the DW1 music playing.
I'm pretty sure there's a part of Alefgard where you get off the ship and you don't hear the Alefgard music. Then disembark a few steps away and it's Alefgard.
Might just be me but I thought DQIV is the best RPG on the NES. When it was released, a friend of mine told me it was the worst game he'd ever played. He hated Act 5 for some reason. About 15 years ago, I give it a shot in the emulator and I loved it so much, I purchased my own copy of it for around $60.
@@roberthunter479 I can see why your friend was frustrated; NES DW4 had the obnoxious system in Ch5 of relegating everyone except the Hero to AI control. It really turned me off as well when I played it; thankfully there is a code (either Game Genie or PAR) that can remove the AI system and it makes DW4 a lot more fun to play. That, and the code that sets Taloon to always do his special actions in combat. 😉
@@shughan666 Agreed. From what I've heard(I don't think I've played any of the re-releases of it), they realized/were told by fans that it was a terribad system and gave the option to turn it off and/or just flat out removed it in later versions of the game on other systems.
Yes this is pedantic, but it's Rubiss, not Rub-iuss :) Loved this video. I remember playing this on the NES as a teen. It's the one game DQ game I never owned, but I remember renting it a number of times. I recently played this on my phone, and while it is an improved game in every way, it doesn't quite have the nostalgia of playing the original version. Thanks for putting this out.

Gotta confess - I have no plans to play most of the games you play thru here, and in fact I've never heard of a lot of em. But I'm an illustrator and these are fantastic to have on while I'm working. Interesting, engaging, great stuff. Keep it up!!
There is one thing you forgot to show. There's a part where if you sleep in the inn in Beran, the Prince of Cannock ends up being cursed. He leaves your party and stays in the bed of that inn. You cure him with with that leaf of the world.
First of all, thanks a ton for these comfy walkthrough videos :) But I also have a question: How are you supposed to figure out where Roge Fastfinger is hiding? Is this one of those, where they basically were selling guidebooks with certain "puzzles", and there is no way to figure it out, besides blind luck? Usually you explain all these mysteries, on how one is supposed to know things, which is the biggest reason as to why I appreciate your videos so much ^^
builders 2, is builders 1, except better. I just wish builders 2's .. expasion of systems was remastered into builders 1 becuase i liked doing what I did in builders 1 better.. rebuilding DQ1's world.
I don't remember this happening in DW2, but in DW3/DQ3 I always flail around when I get the ship and wind up at places I'm probably not leveled high enough to go to.
I just found out something interesting about this game that wasn't covered in the video. In the SNES and GBC versions of the game, the Prince of Cannock will fall ill if you stay at the inn in Beran. It doesn't happen in the NES version, though. But that's not the interesting part. If you finish the game without him, the game takes it into account! He'll either catch up to you before you speak to the main hero's dad, or you can find him in Beran, where he kinda chews you out for beating Hargon without him. It kinda reminds me of DW3, where you can beat the game without the hero in your party (assuming you beat it once before), and it has some extra scripting so your character still becomes Loto/Erdrick.
I found this change interesting as well. I also found out that using a leaf of the world tree on him will permanently remove the curse. Essentially making Beran like the original NES version.
I remember in one version if you do this the game is bugged and you can never get him back after giving him the world leaf.. I know that bug was patched out later but I DO remember it being bugged once.

Sort of. Three is a prequel, but I would still say it's part of the Erdrick timeline, since(unless my foggy old brain is mistaken) you find out at the end that you *are* Erdrick.
Oh, I think I misunderstood your original comment. You meant it's the last of the timeline chronologically, not last in order of games being released, correct?
6:50 - You visit the town of Zahan, and stay at the Inn for 90 gold. Then after picking up the gold key, you immediately go through the travel portal and return to Midenhall castle, where you could have stayed at that Inn for only 12 gold. You don't seem terribly shrewd with using money. When you take vacations in real life, do you avoid 5 star hotels, but then give Motel 6 $1000 a night every time?
This was truly a great video and I was fully engaged into the adventure for quite a few days. I never expected to learn so many new things about a game I've beaten countless times! Excellent work!
When I got my subscription to Nintendo Power in 1990, it gloriously came with a free copy of Dragon Warrior. That copy included a map and item/weapon guide for Dragon Warrior II, which was super valuable when I rented DWII a bit later on. I was stoked when I found the Sword of Destruction, but I could never figure out how to use it. I tried equipping it and then went to the little guy to have the curse removed, only to discover it deleted the sword from my inventory. Big sad face for little me.
Loved this game as a kid . It was the last one on the NES I have never beaten it till about 6 years ago at the young age of 38 lol . I was laid off of my job i had for 10 years. While i was off my first month of 3 total till I found a new job. I sat down for 1 week after the family went to bed and i finally beat it. I always made it to the end but couldn't beat the dragon at the end. I cant remember how times i started over thinking maybe i was missing something but I never found anything else I could have done. But Hargon trick is a game changer i defiantly could have beaten it decades earlier. I love all of your videos keep it up.
