The first day of my adventure takes me into the northern Dragoon Mountains where I visit the remains of the Butterfield stage station at Dragoon Springs. I'll continue into the rugged Cochise Stronghold for a scenic camp, before continuing west towards Pearce the next morning.
Tune in Friday, 8/26 @ 8:00 A.M. to catch Part 2 of the series, which features Camp Rucker, Ringo's Grave, and a late push to camp at the abandoned Middlemarch Mine.
Watch Part 2: • Camp Rucker to Middlem...

As a resident of Dragoon I've been to these places that you shared. You did a great job with your narrative and the camera work was superb!! Thanks for taking me with you 🤠

I lived in Sierra Vista in the late 60's and climbed around the Stronghold and Carr Canyon many times. This is some of the most beautiful country in the entire south west, thank you for taking me back! Ahh, the San Pedro River Basin, what stories you could tell!

I live out here, right off Dragoon Rd, my kitchen window looks at the stronghold! We went to Dragoon Springs today and noted a "face" up on one of the mountain edges. It was like 2 eyes looking at us. Anyone else seen this?

Originally started watching when I saw you drove a ZJ. Kept watching because you show how much there is to see out there if you just go look. If you want a replacement VIC, they all short out over time and end up either smoking, or simply reading low coolant even when coolant and sensor are fine. ZJ Retrofit sells a switch panel for the area that is 3d printed. If you want another VIC let me know. I think I have at least 1 spare one.
@azoffroad_net

Thanks for watching, Mitch! I agree that it's important to just get out and explore -- you never know what you may find. And thanks for the VIC tip. I don't actually miss it that much. I've been talking with a friend on ideas for 3D printing something to fit the hole: everything from a switch panel to some kind of navigation display. I'm not sure what I'll end up with yet.

Me and my father like that area and we often wondered if you could hear the drumbeats of the Apaches in the Chiricahua mountains at times. :) We are Apaches too from San Carlos and my father would be intrigued with your videos of this area. Thanks so much for showing us what is in the area of Cochise Stronghold.

That dead VIC hole is begging for a switch box. Auxbeam 8 Gang Switch Panel, Universal Circuit Control Relay System Box runs about $130, and really centralizes your electrical.

The border activity has certainly gotten bad, but it's mostly on the highways leading North, and West. Offroad is still pretty quiet, safe, and enjoyable. Glad Scotty enjoyed his time down here, and I really appreciate the great presentation he has given my home. Thanks man, looking forward to your future adventures.

Dude, you should have reached out. The stronghold is my front yard. Middle March mine is one of our favorite places, and of course China camp. Then again, I think my message to you mentioning when you get down to this area to reach out was probably over a year ago. We've got some secrets down here that you wouldn't otherwise know about. Like the true location of coachesus treating negotiations. Hidden ancient Indian kitchens, etc you could see my home to the east from your first camp spot near the stronghold.

The Jackass Mail did not build a station here which was updated by Butterfield. It was only Butterfield that built a station here in August and early September 1858. The 4 rock cairns do not cover Confederate graves. There is much controversy, and no graves can be found that can be definitively identified. The only Confederate buried here was Sgt. Ford. This is the only grave that can be defined for the Confederates with a primary reference. But now no Confederate is buried there since Sgt. Ford's grave was desecrated in 1967 and the National Forest Service report stated that the body was stolen. The site marked by an American flag falsely identifies the Butterfield graves. Although somewhat ambiguous, the massacred Butterfield employees may be buried under two of the rock cairns. The National Forest Service is planning on new revised markers stating that no definitive identities for the location of graves are at the site. It is known that there are only five bodies that were buried in the immediate vicinity of the station along with Butterfield employee Silas St. John's amputated left arm and an unidentified found here in 1860.
