It's the first time I've drained the main pond since filling it almost 10 years ago so i though i would film it.

When you have a large pond that needs to be treated with chemicals for sick koi a tip to save on cost is to drain the pond to say halfway down. Then you only need to use half the amount of medication or salt whatever you are using. The main thing to remember when doing this is to keep the filters running because wether it’s a bacteria or parasite issue you are treating you have to treat the filters too.

I really like your approach to keeping koi and that the friendliest fish are your favourites 👍🙂 You're so right about good, mature water having healing properties - because the microscopic ecosystem keeps pathogen levels very low etc keep the videos coming Adam 👍

Well another fantastic video I'm sure you will get the koi back to full health again 7 foot deep ponds are good for water volume but not for maintenance and catching fish, I know from helping Tony Mc,Cann in his 7 ft deep conservatory pond and when he and helpers decommission the pond. I have a 4 foot deep pond in conservatory about 30 years old, I had an open day for the Potters koi club in May, and we have a return trip in July to them 😊
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan Год назад
yeah it's an absolute nightmare to catch fish there is about two fish that i have never caught no matter how hard i try. Smashing it's been quite a while sine I've had a koi club round to my house shame really it's nice to keep in touch with local clubs.

Hi Adam, I've always thought your pond was a little overstocked but now realise it probably isn't. I'm guessing you've got around 40 koi in there? You've already answered my thoughts on how you were dechlorinating the tap water. I'd go with the salt treatment myself, its worked for me. You'll only need nine 25kg bags and I've seen them at £13 each so not too bad. Anyway, good luck getting them all back to full health. Great video. 😀👍

I must say,it does alot for the fish,new fresh water,during winter,I had a burst pipe,lost 3/4 of water from my 5000 g pond,I just trickled it in,thankfully I had a bead filter,and my ashp was on that filter,usually during winter the fish get sores etc,come the spring just gone,no marks what so ever
@SkyOctopus1
@SkyOctopus1 3 месяца назад
Did you have to put fresh bacteria into your filter? I can only assume that much tap water would have killed off a load of it.

My fish feed similar to your fish and i had a similar issue where fish would get injured. For me it was the pond stone slabs the fish were rubbing on so I put pipe insulation to protect them. For you I think it may be that outlet pipe that is in the water remove that or patch it up with some pipe insulation so the fish dont get smashed up against it while feeding.

Hey Adam, a couple years ago right before a freezing cold Canadian winter I did a complete water change of my outdoor pond. I think I made a pretty big mistake by pressure washing all of walls and the bottom of the liner. Only 300 gallons of water from the original 2500 gallons were put back in. This was used to temporarily store all my koi while I pressure washed the pond. Needless to say, when I put the koi back in, like over half of the koi looked so stunned. Barely moving at all, kind of just stuck at the surface of the 4 foot deep pond. I was so worried, but after about 4 days they returned to normal, no losses thankfully. I think from this I learned two things - do not net them out and also do not pressure wash all the algae as this will avoid new pond syndrome I believe. One question, do you recommend trickling in the water slowly over a longer period of time? I had two hoses fill the pond up again in nearly 3 hours. I imagine this further shocked the fish - too much change in too little time. Any thoughts are appreciated😄
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan Год назад
Yeah i think we've all done that I've put fish in separate tanks before and it can be so stressful for me and the fish. Same with the pond walls you'll never clean it all off so it will recover pretty quick but best to just leave it. I don't know what the water in Canada is like but in UK your better off trickling in water slowly to not put to much chlorine in the pond and just keep the water fresh. in some cases the water from the tap can be worse than whats in the pond so that's not ideal.
@L3G0FaN
@L3G0FaN Год назад
@@AdamJulyan There’s no chlorine in my tap water thankfully. But like you said there’s a lot of other chemicals/minerals in tap water. I’ll try trickling it in this fall when I do my clean out👍 Plan will be to drain 80%, vacuum any muck on the bottom, and refill slower this time.

After all this time of watching your videos, i didnt realise that pond was that deep. Shame some if the fish have got so many issues qith their scales.. Are you confident they will repair the damage themselves without having to treat them..

Water mains pressure increases at night as there are less consumers. It is very noticeable when firefighting a decent size job.

May I pick your brains for a bit of advise . I am building my first pond @5000 litres ,3" BD With a 10 000 lt ph pump not sure what size pipework to run 1.5" or 2" to returns. Hope you can advise.
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan Год назад
id use a 4inch bottom drain a 3inch would work if the pipe work isnt too long but a 10,000 L/h pump is enough for a 4 inch. id always use 2" pipe going through pond wall because its hard to change if you decide you should have gone bigger and it will reduce the force of the water coming through the inlet.
@m1a9v6s4
@m1a9v6s4 Год назад
@@AdamJulyan thanks for the advise the 3" drain is already in but it's only about 1.5mtr to the filter so unfortunately I'm stuck with that but will definitely go with 2" pipe work .Thanks again Mick.

How do you get away with the water board allowing all that usage? They were onto me with just 6000 gallons and I’m metered. I can’t imagine why the cost of salt bothers you compared to the cost of the water unless you aren’t metered.

I knew from your previous videos that the pond was big but never imagined it to be that big. It's so large that if you had yelled while you were standing in there it probably would have created an echo. I had a leak in my pond last year and ended up draining it completely. It's 5000 US gallons or about 4100 imperial gallons and it cost a lot to refill it. I hate to think what your water bill will be for refilling your pond.

@adamjulyan hiya mate was just wondering what sort heater would be needed or be sufficient to heat the water on a 9000 gallon indoor pond to temperatures from 24-28 C ? Or 78 F I’m thinking of doing something similar to what you’ve done but for Tanganyikan and Malawi cichlids
