The fifth video in a series photographing the Drakensberg Escarpment of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
On our fifth day we hike from the top of Rockeries pass to Ntonjelana.
I guided this trip for five photography friends, all of whom are independent photographers and hikers so I was able to find time to talk to camera.
I regularly run workshops in the Drakensberg for adventurous photographers. Next years trips are sold out but if you'd like to join in 2021 then send me a message or get on my mailing list!

Fantastic Alex. It’s those special moments that make landscape photography incredible. I can imagine your sense of euphoria and panic shooting the panoramic!

Superb video, brilliant blend of adventure, beautiful photos, technical chat and some cool music. That’s a truly stunning panoramic photo and the time lapse was great. This drakensberg series is fantastic.

Awesome time lapse! You couldn't have asked for a better ending with that cloud rolling in to close out the frame! So beautiful.

Corban LaFon yeah I actually have 2 sequences where that happens now, but then I have shot a LOT of time-lapse in the Drakensberg!

@@alexnail That's awesome! I need to mess around with doing more time lapse videos. But I need to get better at composing good landscape shots first I think.

The North Peak area is simply stunning. The views to the Cathedral Ridge and over the Mnweni in the other direction are magic. Add in the lighting and nature which your wonderful shot of North Peak demonstrates ... wow. I do recommend camping in the area - closer to North Peak - so you have more time to check it all out. Water is there. The view to the Cathedral Ridge is even better closer to South Peak where you can see the smuggling trail - Mljambona? - as well as the ridge. Just a magical area, though, and your video is grand.

Mark McLain thanks Mark, I’ve camped at the base of south peak twice. If you look on my website there are a few shots from up there. In this particularly case we just couldn’t do THAT many camps, the trip would have taken too long! The route you are talking about is Ntonjelana (although really it should be spelt Tonyelana!). I’ve often seen smugglers in that area, it’s like a highway!
@markmclain1956
@markmclain1956 4 года назад
@@alexnail A very steep highway! Lots of cattle carcasses that didn't quite make it. In the opposite direction, though probably further over towards where you first come down into the Mnweni, the diamond mine off in the Lesotho hinterlands is quite the counterpoint. Cheers from the Left Coast.

Fantastic shots Alex, outstanding images you have captured there! Great explanation of how you produced your panorama too, have any of these images made it on your portfolio there’s got to be a couple at the very least. Cheers Carl

Carl Reid thanks Carl - I aim to get better at explaining things but with these more location based vlogs I can’t go too in-depth! None of these shots did make my portfolio in the end although the panorama came close! Glad you enjoyed it!

Graham Williamson cheers Graham, chuffed to bits with that photo although it’s a bit of a shame I couldn’t shoot it properly with my 5DSR and tripod! I’ve watched that timelapse a lot now, it’s pretty fascinating and since the native resolution is 8K you can really explore the view as it changes which is cool!

Superb stuff, Alex. Amazing captures and how lucky to have those conditions. I love photography but I have zero equipment (my Huawei Mate 20 Pro only 😏) and even less knowledge. Just watched you 5 Drakensberg videos back to back today and I've learned a little already 😊 Your manner and explanations are conducive to learning and continued viewing. I have to say though that your fellows are clearly carrying a lot of weight, even for a 5 day trip, so I'm guessing there is a lot of weight and volume in camera equipment. I see you're still toting your Terra Nova. A shame the Trailstar never worked out for you. Though I sold you mine, recently I've been considering buying another. Looking forward to the next instalment of this series but meanwhile I'll watch your other films 😊 Atb mate. Elton.
@alexnail
@alexnail 4 года назад
The Fell Beyond thanks Elton. The problem with the trail star is simply that I am 6’4” so I don’t fit any inners and even with the fly sheet alone it doesn’t really give me quite enough shelter (in part because I often sleep on my front) so I use it for summer camps in good weather only really.

Absolutly insane light conditions ! Like your slightly different approach of vloging with the sharp critique of your own pictures (which is not the easiest). I'm a recent subscriber, discovered your channel a week ago. Almost watched all of your videos ! I know the hard work behind it, but it is worth it, when you inspire people, sharing your off the beaten paths adventures... Keep on going, man ! 👍

Nice video and the time lapse was great. It’s always interesting to see how the mountains affect the clouds. Your logic on cloning seems solid. I also clone out man-made items such as signs and benches unless they add something to the scene.
@alexnail
