While in Colorado for a training event, Jason had the opportunity to quickly shoot a portrait shoot at a nearby stream with the beautiful model Alyssa Goode. They planned on doing the shoot earlier in the day but due to unforeseen circumstances they ended up having to do the shoot at midnight!
Using the Sony A9 with the 50mm Sony Zeiss, Jason lit the set using the Rotolight Aeos with the Westcott Illuminator 2 Stop Diffuser. For a select amount of shots he also used the Westcott Illuminator Silver reflector.

By far the most magazine-worthy model you've used for your shoots. The model's facial structure is made for commercial shoots. A9's AF at night seems to be just fine.

J, my first thought was that I would have probably shot this at a slower shutter speed than 200 and used less ISO 6400. You always have good reasons for what you do so I'm asking to learn what that might have been. The model is nothing short of stunning. I'm certain she was miserable but what an incredible trooper and I'm sure once she warmed up she was blown away by the result.

I just want to say that when I first came across your videos, I thought you were cocky and I was turned off by the argument that if you don't shoot with flash, you are limiting yourself. I'm 36 and got my first dslr at 20. I never liked the way flash washed out everything and because I was trained in college as a photojournalist using only natural light, I became super stubborn and anti-flash. Let me just say, that I started to pay attention to your videos and I got a different impression. I'm finally going to admit that the biggest reason I avoid flash is that I never learned how to use it. I learned manual, I learned how to get action shots and write captions for news stories, but I never thought that one day I would say that I need to learn flash. I'm totally looking into the Rotolight system because you were able to keep the ambiance in the background while beautifully illuminating your subject. Thank you. I'm a big fan. Sorry for judging you at first. I guess my ego spoke for me ;)

Not too much grain at 6400. I've got an a7rii and don't know if I could pull that off. Looks like I've got more learning to do. Seems like the eye focus works well. Great shots, as always.

you can with the a7rm2 not sure why a lot of people complain about the low light capability, I've used it a night with just street lights at 1/20 / or more I forgot and images were darn sharp. oh, and handheld too!

At ISO 6400 you're probably not having the problem I'm experiencing. Right now, Sony wise, I just have the a6300. I was doing some low key studio shots and my only problem with it is that the EVF and the back go almost black when I try to compose the image. I'm shooting at ISO 100 and 400 because I want as little noise as possible. Any way to overcome this without turning the modeling lights up to full power?

So please help me understand this... if you can’t see the background in the shots, why are you taking them in cold water outside at midnight? I could get the same result in a kiddy pool at home and at least then I could put warm water in it for her...
@photographerjonathan
@photographerjonathan 7 лет назад
some models look real nice but when you shoot them there just not photogenic. or they project nothing from there eyes. but this girl i wasn't expecting much. but when you started shooting she was very photogenic. her eyes have intensity in almost every shot. good model. the only thing i can say negative about the shoot is that most of the shots i couldn't even see that she was lying in water. but still nice images.

Heck no! I do agree that a shooter and the subjects must have fun as it makes the photos that much better. My point was that the conditions didn't allow the audience to see how the model and the environment complemented each other. I enjoyed this segment, don't get me wrong. I'm just nit picking. It's what I do. LOL!

Dear Pinewood Studios, Want to see a disappointed face? Come and see mine when I opened your two thousand priced AEOS On Location Portable light kit to find out there's no batteries included and there's nothing On Location and Portable right here in my hands because I need to get it plugged in to some wall if I want to use it. Did I just spent so much for PORTABILITY and did not get it out of the box? How dare you do such a thing? That's like selling a car without wheels. "What do you want, our product is fine and fully operational? Offcourse you can't use it for the main purpose you bought it but we are not sorry. Where did our offer said we sell our cars with wheels? We sell cars not wheels." Now please try and imagine your main competition, the flagships like Profoto B1 or Interfit S1 On Location Portable light kits coming out of their boxes without batteries. Can You? No, you can't. You know why? Because it's not enough to make a good product, you need to be able to make your costumers satisfied and happy all the way. I'm sitting here not being able to understand your marketing "logic". The least you must do is to ask all your dealers to add in bold capital letters to their offers: "ATTENTION! BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED" All I can do right now is to leave your Portable On Location light pack behind and hurry because my flight is due and I have a lot of professional work waiting for me and my professional flagship tools to arrive. :(

Jason, as much as I admire you as a person and a photographer, I have to admit I generally don't like your portrait photos. Something about the way you compose them always seems off, especially given the context of the environment. I don't have any right to give specific criticism since it's largely just a difference in taste. Even here, I agree with others where the picture you shared had very little to do with her environment. A similar shoot could have been done in a dark bathroom. That being said, I love this model! her eyes are intense and I actually really loved the eye makeup with the dark lips. Her hair and outfit really work as a whole character. like... edgy classic. She is a trooper and I hope to see you shoot her again :)
