When I'm looking to buy houses, wall color and light fixtures are irrelevant. I can easily fix that. I want a good neighborhood and a great floorplan.

Enjoying this old show again. I bought an unsellable (over a year on the market) because of its huge lot, ample rooms, seaside location and wraparound porch, great floors and 12ft ceilings. I had to look past the former owner's love of deep earth tones, pickled pine, multiple accent walls and dated fixtures and see those wonderful bones. Got $75K off the original asking price and spent about $55K in reno and repairs but I can honestly say we found our family's forever home.

Never underestimate people's lack of imagination or ability to "look past". The CEO of American airlines once said "if there's a coffee stain on the seat, passengers think you don't maintain the engines." Selling real estate is managing perceptions of what a buyer will experience in a property - will they be constantly repairing or will they be able to enjoy the space without that work.

The consistent message in this show is ‘strip absolutely everything out of the house, paint walls beige, and hang Walmart art on the walls and people will be like “wow this is gorgeous”...... ‘ sold!

Such a strange setup having the sitting room and the family room right beside each other, only divided by a free-standing wall. I'd be removing that wall and opening it right up, if at all possible.

After this makeover.. I would have just cancelled selling the house and stay in.. Drastically amazing transformation..

I love how they were team players and accepted that they needed to change their home in order to sell it 👍🏼

The bright blue in the living room dinning room and master bedroom colors are making a comeback in my area & I love it . The kitchen needed handles not grey paint.

Your habit of taking sellers to a well presented de-cluttered house that recently sold is invaluable to the rest of the project. I think it gives them a clear visual to shoot for and puts everyone working on the project on the same page. Brilliant!

I love the shade of green for the master bedroom. I’m not a green person, it’s not an unusual color that the hostess commented on. Instead of saying we’re going to get rid of the blue how about we’re going to repaint. Leave out the negative and add positive

I've been binge watching this show. The contractor Anthony, is excellent. I may not agree with everything he does, but he has great skills

Do people REALLY need to be told to get rid of clutter and re-paint over horrendous purples, hot pinks, and room-darkening blues in order to sell a house quickly?

WONDERFUL to see a family that is POSITIVE about changes in order to sell their home ,,,instead of negative nellie's that doubt any/all changes for a home they will no longer live in. GREAT EPISODE!

Every time I hear the Real Estate agent telling Sofia why the house isn't selling, I blame the agent, they should have been more firm regarding decluttering and toning colours down.

I cant believe this show is from 2008. I have never heard of it before, and I used to watch a lot of home remodeling shows around that time period. Anyways, this show is still relevant in 2021.

I ran into a similar problem without dramatic paint. I merely painted a wall in each room a different shade of metallic grey, up the staircase, painted wood floors because there's old hundred-year-old year old wood add new fixtures , new carpet and received an offer in 6 hours

Okay im not sure if anyone has commented this yet but that poor bird in the kitchen. The cage is tiny, it has no toys and birds are not supposed to live in a kitchen or anywhere with intense smells, like smoke, or cooking garlic.

Paint really does go a long way. And, it doesn’t cost that much.

I love this lady, the seller. The husband, as well! She's so undefensive; super refreshing. Note to self, it's a rather attractive quality. It's astonishing how much stuff we can accumulate + not even realize it.

I got a good real estate agent who was trained in styling etc, who helped me make my place sizzle, and it sold at a premium price in a flat market. Nearby neighbours didn't choose her and instead went with some fast talking, inept blokes who managed to get zero offers over months. My agent told me the house was better with than mine - I went and checked it out, sure enough, it had quality finishes, but it was super boring and dated. It felt smaller, even though it was very well designed. And I had a beautiful garden I had made myself ( blend of colour and textures). Most people just look at the general vibe, not the bones and buy on emotion, not seeing or understanding what they are looking at. I got four offers and some of them were wannabe investors - they were wasting their own time and should have been snapping up the other house.

I love how open to changes the owners were.

This is 2008 before HGTV and other home shows did stuff like opening a wall, gutting perfectly good wood cabinets that could be repainted/stained. My favorite show from back then was "Get it Sold" with the forgotten Sabrina Soto (can't find that show on RU-vid even). She did what this woman does, budget was $1k. HGTV needed advertisers probably and it turned into redoing your house for $100k

Omg all those colors & the other dated stuff. We once bot a house w a 70s kitchen/ dining area w gold orange & avocado wall paper & a wagon wheel light fixture.

I did this to my home and the next person that looked they bought it 19,000 over the asking price . It was epic so when I hear comments about how petty people are just remember this I sold it ! Do it’s not petty one bit show me the money baby

all about trends... the green would be more on trend these days with the "zen" and "soothing" feel than the bombastic yellow, which feels dated.

They showed in the beginning that they had 3 adult children living there but I only saw two spare bedrooms along with an office.

It might look dated and have a little too much stuff but calling it old and shabby is pretty far off. Really just packing some stuff up and getting rid of the garish blue in the living room would sell it, they shouldn't need a show to tell them that.

If I were living at home at age 22 and my parents needed more privacy, I know what the solution would be

Don’t downsize! Children return with their children and the downsized home is too small. Been there, done that, and regret my decision.

I loved the old chandelier but otherwise a big improvement

I know it's 12 years later but the house does look a lot better after they worked on it.. except..for the parents bedroom. The master bedroom had that celery color on the walls. It was beautiful. It was perfect. I don't know what the hell color it is now it almost looks like pinkish. Sad. I can understand why they didn't tear that wall down upstairs. They needed to have a separation between the family room and the dining room. Some people don't like them flowing together too much.

OMG I am SOOOOO tired of all tan houses!!!!! Please don't do that anymore!

Funny i have watched updates on tv shows and they actually pick colors like this. I think just decluttering and cleanning is all this house needed

come on that mint green is beautiful. especially with the gold lamps. i do agree that the blue rooms and the kitchen did need some paint. they should move half of the formal sitting rooms furniture to the living room and got rid of those ugly bulky couches.

I absolutely LOVE that blue stripped living room! I want to do that to my hallways or bathroom! I guess that makes me weird too? Oh well....💙💟💙

One last thing.. it's funny how the showing placement looks better but isn't functional, like the daughters bedroom.. I love the bed in front of the window much better than where it was, but then you have nowhere for your tv.. it's like it tricks you then you move in and nothing works, like my current house lol

They turned a 1980 house to a 1981 updated renovation.

I’m just painting my house neutral colors right off the bat so I don’t have to deal with this. I’ll only have to paint one wall in my boys room before we sell. Also living a minimalist (you don’t have to be a crazy minimalist) lifestyle will help when it comes to moving because you won’t have piles of stuff everywhere.

She is so nice to them about the dang apple border. The original realtor should have told them that that $20 border is costing them thousands. They can put up another apple border wherever they land

Gosh, if they want something fresh, modern and updated either buy this house and do it to your own taste or go build a new house! All this needs is neutral paint all the way through and pack up all the excess furniture and personal items. It's a good time to declutter, only keep precious items and sell or donate the rest.

I must admit those buyers have little or no imagination if they get turned off by apple stencils and wall color.

I recently discovered a couple who had bought a home that looked like it had been updated physically in appearance but once they moved in they discovered that none of the drains in the house work and are leaking causing floor damage. The foundation leaks rain water into the basement. It was painted and made to look nice but in reality it’s not livable.

It seems that viewers have no imagination. I don’t get it. For me , I look at the size of the rooms and how it will be for my family to live in the space. But I understand by watching these programs that buyers don’t seem to want to make the space their own, they want it like a show home and to live in the space that’s created to change .

That weird family room and living room with the wall between just about gave my brain a seizure, my freaking eyes started blinking uncontrollably when I was looking at that split-view, I'm guessing my brain though I was having a stroke and not seeing things right.

The first thing I saw was that fireplace painted white. Now it’s stunning! I painted my orange fireplace too but I faux painted textured brick instead of pure white. We painted the same colored brick on the outside of our house too. Very good choice, that! It’s too bad that they couldn’t have gotten rid of the wall dividing the dining room and the family room to make a great room.

The only thing I didn’t like was the painted brick fireplace, some buyers like to see brick and it’s easier to paint over later than to strip paint off.

I don’t like that they painted over the brick fireplace. It lost some good detail.

WOW sold 10 days later ! As to the 22 year old maybe there is a reason the parents want to keep her home but with some independence. Most folks do not have the $ to move when their kids are older - the house was attractive after it was painted

In a perfect world the wall between the rooms would come down and that space would be super. The kitchen same thing. Wall down reorient the counter.
