Dramatic Landings and Take-offs through Cross-Winds at Leeds Bradford Airport - 22nd June, 2008

Gail force winds on 22nd June 2008 caused many flight delays and diversions at Leeds Bradford Airport, including two BMI flights being diverted to Durham Tees Valley, and one Futura flight to Manchester. This video shows several aircraft crabbing on approach before landing and aircraft taking off with what the weather forecast had said were 65mph cross wind gusts. Their are some spectacular results. Some identified aircraft are: Thomas Cook Airbus A320; Jet2 Boeing 737; BMI Embrear ERJ145; and an Air Southwest Bombardier Dash-8.

The pilot did his best. He landed with the "gear to wind", the correct technic for a severe crosswind.

Excellent footage Stuart - and some brilliant flying, by the pilots, not for the passengers I'll bet! JET2? Excellent - use 'em 2 or 3 times a year, never a problem. Not the biggest 'plane at LBA but the greatest was Concorde, on 'round the bay' flights. Too expensive for me sadly.

As a pilot, cross winds make for an exciting challenge. Leeds is one that I'd like to get in my logbook very soon.

@expoboy52 Thomas Cook is a tour operator who own their own jets, and Jet2 are a budget regional airline, based in Leeds, hence the 'Yorkshire' on the plane. Have a read about them on Wikipedia.

@willbaguley9000 At the time this was a Canon Legria that is no longer available, the zoom was digital to x125 magnification. I'm now using a newer model Canon Legria with a x200 zoom and it's even better. I'd recommend Canon camcorders, they seem to be consistently good quality.

Nice video, I was hoping to see KLM Cityhopper on it, I've spent years flying Fokkers in and out of LBA, its one of the worst airports I have experienced for bad weather particularly fog and crosswinds. Crosswind limits are generally around 30 to 35 kts for an experienced pilot.

Good to have a British Video. Normally it's Americans repeating the photos over hoping we won't notice. Then to top it off they have crappy music or you can't hear it because of them going "Wow look at that". Great Video By the way.

I understand aircraft manufacturers have design limits on the crosswind components they can land onto. On top of that, operators have even tighter limits for added safety, to protect passengers and do not over expose them and their flight crew.

Probaly the 757s or the PIA one from Islamabd (it's an Airbus but I don't know which one). We have had wide bodies in the past, but these days they want a longer runway.

Nice film. I have been in LBA quite a bit. It can be rough, especially with the could base being low. A 65mph xwind would be too much tough. The limit for most aircraft is 30 to 35kts(e.g. KLM Cityhopper fokker 70 and 100). Which would mean 40mph maximum.

seems that what these pilots are doing is what fighter pilots did as a evasive maneuver in World War II. They called it a skid. The technique was either right rudder left aileron or left rudder right aileron. that made the plane go sideways. i remember being on a plane who did like these was an Eastern Airlines Constellation. The pilot was a friend of my parents. He flew a P-51D in the war, and that's where i remember about a skid.

what a place to put a cemetry! but anyway what is the biggest type of plane you get there?
@Nickilaa
@Nickilaa 12 лет назад
Tbh I don't think its a fail in anyway. This airport is not easy to land at due to its elevation, therefore it is is more subjected to the crosswinds. And the reason the gear are retracted is to prevent drag....if there is too much drag this could be even more of a problem. It'll also be part of the checklist therefore they shouldn't miss it.
