Good video - short & sweet! I also appreciate you using male models. There are soooo many videos out there with female models and as someone getting into more portraiture it's nice to have a better balance of male & female subjects.

Nice Jeff, I love your videos and you always have useful information! But question for you....this is showing how to maximize using just one softbox. Would you actually ever realistically use this setup on a paid shoot for the effect? I have many lights and modifiers, but often times I tend to over complicate things. How do you decide from the start ? People can copy your (and many others) light setups, their frustration is often WHAT to use in situations, not HOW to use. NOT a criticism at all as you are very specific about what this video is about and you give great info and ideas on it, but more a request for a video explaining how you decide on what lights and modifiers you will use on a shoot. THANKS!
@JeffRojas

msc1963 great question! I shoot what my client is look for. If my client is looking for something that looks like this, why would I over complicate things?

thanks! gorgeous photography. Is it really one softbox and no shadows on the background? I guess your white light room helps here. In dark environment it will be darker, right? I struggled to hear what your are saying.

It is an interesting statement to tell the distance of a light source does not affect the quality of light.

Maybe i am wrong but i think there should be no difference on the background if you adjust the power of the flash by the same amount as you close your appature. As far as i know the light halves when you close your apature by one stop. If you than double the poweroutlet of your flash there should be no difference in brightness neither on the models face nor on the background. I like your videos and photos thank you.
@JohnMacLeanPhotography
@JohnMacLeanPhotography 6 лет назад
exactly correct!
@edulopezphoto
@edulopezphoto 6 лет назад
Correct.
@mscottc1964
@mscottc1964 6 лет назад
Sticky, not correct at all because you are not taking into effect light fall off and incorrectly thinking of what to do with the flash (or did not listen, he said open up to wide aperture not stop it down). Opening up to a very wide aperture (letting in way more light) means you don't need as much flash power, that makes you REDUCE the output of your flash NOT increase / double it. And if the flash source is close to the subject and not very strong and then reduced even more, the light falloff will mean almost none gets to the background. In addition the 45 degree angle down means even less light hits the background and even less bounces back due to the angle. Using this technique can reduce the light hitting the background so much you can easily turn a grey background black.
@obezijana
@obezijana 6 лет назад
As a beginner, i wonder why did you use smaller softbox here instead of large, say 7 feet softbox, like you did in other your video with 7' umbrella? How do you choose if you don;t need a very large softbox? Because you wanted shadows to be harsher or because you are shooting close-up and smaller is sufficient? Thank you!
@nebus5
@nebus5 3 года назад
I imagine because a 7" umbrella is going to be much more difficult to setup/manoeuvre in small space and controlling the spill is also harder as he was trying to keep the background darker.

start subtly rotating the light source which will shift the light to dark transition
@dangarcia5198
@dangarcia5198 7 лет назад
K. Adam Christensen Instead of aiming the center of your light directly at your subject, use the "edge" of your light and allow the "center" to spill in a different direction.

the most simple way is: use only 1 LIGHT, and a FEATURES APPEARANCE MODEL (wrinkle,freckle, scar,paints face, tattoo...of course beautiful counts, but beautiful is quite base on personal aesthetics, not as easy to catch your eyes like others), if the model knows how to make a pose, that's the ideal, if she/he don't, just not straight facing the camera, EYES MUST LOOKING THE CAMERA! and DON'T SMILE, i simply think smiling is a most difficult skills to master~ No smile, 8/10 photo is no way to fail~ Shoot RAW, lights and shadow is the most easier part (for me) to handle in digital image. If you shoot film, yes, what's a real master i respect~

@llg4958
@llg4958 7 лет назад
The light meter has its place, but the lighting setup was not complicated. If you are just using one light, you might as well use the light meter built into your camera. Most photographers use the light meter when they are using more than one light, or doing spot metering for landscapes.

Great shots. Pithy explanation. Worth pointing out that only the top brands allow you to reduce power to the extent that you get falloff at that distance.
@RayValdezPhotography

Actually just do research on products that let you lower the power or just use a flash off camera in a modifier. RU-vidrs just want to bitch about nothing.

This is great. I'm a tad confused tho. How are you killing the ambient light so well with such a low shutter speed? Most photographers are ramping up their shutter speed to kill all ambient light so that they can shoot at a wider aperture, but you're using a wide aperture and a shutter speed of only 1/200th...
@othomophoto8433
@othomophoto8433 4 года назад
1/200 is probably the flash aync speed which would allow him to shoot at that shutter speed.
