Here it is everyone, my completed drawing of these magnificent animals. If you’ve been following me you know it’s been quite some time since I began this project, 5 months ago. I remember when I came across the photo by David Yarrow and right away I felt like I needed to draw this incredible image. I knew it would be a challenge to capture these elephants in pencil but I was ready to try to take my skill to the next level. I decided to challenge myself even further by doing it as the biggest drawing I’ve ever done - 3 feet wide. It was completely worth the time and effort in the end. If you don’t challenge yourself, you will never realize what you can do. It took me longer than I expected and it wasn’t easy to keep going with it at times but once I start something I don’t turn back.
After spending so much time creating elephants on paper and analyzing ever detail down to the last wrinkle, I can see how beautiful and unique they really are. They are quietly confident and incredibly strong. While they could dominate and be destructive, they remain peaceful and calm. David Yarrow did an amazing job capturing these extraordinary creatures in a photograph and I did my best to recreate that in a drawing. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to see this in person.
