I am fairly new to Sketchup and just paid for the pro subscription. I really like your easy-going way of training and I am going through some of your various training videos for cabinets and houses. You are a good teacher Aaron. 👍👍 Two thumbs up bro.

Great series, I'm watching them all. One trick: when you're drawing out a rectangle, you don't have to specify both dimensions if you don't want to. Suppose the rectangle snaps to "9'0,5". If the 9' measurement is ok, you only need type ",3.5". Sketchup will replace the second dimension with what you typed, but leave the first one as it was inferred.

I never thought of doing the walls that way infact the more I watch your videos the more I’m starting to use sketchup the correct way I must also say the drawings that I have used have never been so accurate but I still like how you made layers

Thanks for the post. I prefer to use construction lines to map out the floor plan then trace them to draw the plan and extrude it up all at once. Next I will work on the doors.

Thanks for sharing. Yes I have another method which might be easier for some. After the first rectangle to start the interior walls, I just use push-pull continuously thereafter. When I reach a junction, I use push-pull plus. This is particularly quicker with four way junctions. The down side is the clean-up.

Thanks a lot, Aaron. though You looked very tired in this vid, you did a great job drawing the walls. Of course, as you said, there are so many ways to draw interior walls. the question is, what are we going to do with these interior walls next. I guess that should be the factor controlling grouping them.
@aarondietzen2995
@aarondietzen2995 5 лет назад
madwani Exactly! If I were going to frame them, I would group each individually. If this is for a floor plan, I can group them all together!

Hi, just got into this channel, really really helpful, very interesting, well done to Aarron, great presenter thank you. One thing: How on earth do you cope with the imperial measurement system?? To my mind it is mad to have to type in colons and exclamation marks and forward slashes every time you need to put in a dimension. Every time I hear "Move it by 15/16ths or we`ll make that 5`6 and 7/8ths it drives me crazy. I can cope with machinists working in imperial, because the thou is at least a decimal measurement. But using imperial dimensions in a piece of software like this is just mental. Sorry for the rant, keep up the good work. Love and peace

Aaron, Thank you for your videos. I am designing a piece of furniture for our dining room, and thought I would explore the "Match New Photo" command to put my Sketchup model into context. I was able to bluff my way through most of it, but ended up with a scale mismatch. My model includes the corner of the room, openings, other furniture to scale. The photo I imported was of the same corner, but not to that scale. I could find no way to manipulate the photo size. So I tried to resize the whole model to match the photo. I used the Tape tool, and tried to change the model wall height (96") to the dimension in the photo (10'-10") to re-scale the whole model. But that did not work. Then I tried the Scale tool, and enlarge the whole model using the ratio to enlarge 96" to 130". That seemed to work in an entirely unpredictable way. I did finally use the Scale tool to bumble toward something acceptable. If you get a chance, I'd like to see your workflow around that feature.

Been watching through those awesome tutorials for a while now. And got a question: what do you use for such a smooth camera control? When I do my drawings I use middle mouse button and my camera control is jerky and awkward. Thanks for great tutorials by the way.

@brumasbusiness

What I did was click on the channel (sketchUp) then click on "Videos". Then the channel shows all their videos in chronological way. I then scrolled until around 2 years and found this video (or one of the others). Because they were publish one week after another they are all there one next to another. After you are scrolling down, you can as well do Ctrl + F (Comand + F in Mac) and write some of the words of this title, like "Interior Walls" and it will find on the gallery list the video, the others will be right after. You might have to scroll until past 2 years so it can load all the possible videos until that point.

I'm thinkin' I need to keep Interior and Exterior Walls separate and on separate tags. 🤔 I design tiny houses and other tiny things, so it gets a bit cramped in there... I always pull up from the bottom. How funny... Ah! You did it once!

At 3:30 you show how to erase the line on top of the wall. actually you would have to do the same thing to the bottom side of the wall since there should be another line. optically is doesn't make a difference but in the past i had stuff like that causing a lot of problems when i wanted to change something later.

Not specific to this video, but I want to be able to select a line or surface and resize it absolute, not relative. I've gone metric so subtraction is not so bad for me, but I still want to be able to set the desired dimension rather than enter the adjustment Please direct me to an extension that does this Thank you

I've been using SU since 2003. You snuck in a command I hadn't used before! Orient faces... I normally reverse faces indivually with a quick key I set up ('Q' in my case). Just activate a single face command like follow me or push-pull, and tap 'Q' over any reversed face.

@@brumasbusiness SketchUp allows you to paint both sides, so not as much an issue. Some other 3D software does not, and some ignore the back side altogether. So if you are going to use it in other software, you will get bad results. Also, if you hold shift when painting it paints all front-faces or back-faces (separately) with same material your new paint color/texture. If faces are reversed some are painted, and opposite side are paint where they are flipped.

there is a much faster way, using the make a face plugging u can push the walls out of the plan.

Do anyone know which software he used to draw the floor plan images? I was wondering what is the best approach to follow: build the 3d model in sketchup then use section function to get the floor plans drawing or draw the floor plans first then import in sketchup and build the model on them? there are schools of design that encourage begining designing in 3d for more creativity if you know what I mean

There are a couple of things that are REALLY frustrating that would be helpful to explain. For example, if you create a wall and you want to place it against another wall, there is some kind of snap function that does not allow you to align them perfectly. it's like the edges and corners are magnets that repel each other. Also, many of the functions that you describe in here, such as a quick way to duplicate a wall using the option key, don't work in the new version of Sketchup Pro.
@SketchUp
@SketchUp 2 года назад
Was there something specific that you cannot get to work in 2022? After a quick review, there is nothing shown that should not work in the most recent version.
