Hi Mike Lin......I was one of your LA students at WVU in 1972. It is good to see that you are still actively teaching graphics and sketching to students and through You Tube to a much larger audience. I always enjoyed your loose style to sketching and your humor. I'm a better landscape architect today for knowing you and acquiring some of my skills from you. Thanks for the great memories and instruction.
If you were one of the 40 that put a thumbs down to this video you have no sense of humor. Mr. Lin, what a fantastic video! I am in the process of watching it a second time. The quick, practical techniques have already proven helpful!
I don't think I ever laughed so much watching a drawing video before! Your humour makes it so easy to follow along and learn. I hope you'll continue making videos. I feel like I've been set free to draw and ruin the paper. Don't fear the paper!
Everything I said on the video was true. As long as you have a good attitude with good skills I listed on www.beloose.com, you will do well. I don't think I am funny, you are just a nice person. Thanks.
Great confidence builder. Not to be so SERIOUS about yourself in life. Then you accept to criticise is easy. To do yourself is so much harder. Critics don’t learn, they sleep through life. Triers always succeed. Eventually. Decide what your goal is and work for it and one day you’ll realise OH actually I’m here, I’m happy with this. The same critics will say, hummm, it looks better but..... ashy them to do it and they’ll generally accept, well actually they can’t do it as good as you. You’ve already won by watching these videos and by having the will to learn, even before you pick up that pencil or pen. You’re a winner.
"I'll tell them that they are gonna die"...... I could just imagine he told that and everyone just freaks out and Mike is just there... Standing while smiling....... BEST TEACHER EVER
Sometime I want to become a professional concept artist and your video changed my way of seeing and DOING lots of things better from now on! Thanks for your wisdom!
Oh, so good! I'm not an artist; I'm a designer, and I'm not done yet! I draw; I make mistakes; but so what? I've only messed up a piece of paper, not my life! I allow my designs to be criticized and I improve. With each success, I gain confidence, and I keep repeating this process! Thank you, thank you for this wonderful wisdom and the tricks I'm about to learn, Mike Lin!
Many teachers use difficult language to express the tips of graphic and students are unable to apprehend the meaning of them. I only use straight forward and simple language so people can understand them quickly and thoroughly. Like instead of watching the LINE WEIGHT, I have over 20 ways to watch. Please go to www.beloose.com under tips to learn. Thanks.
Thanks Mike, you should get a prize for being the best art teacher out there.... I never came across anybody that can teach the basic principles of drawing so entertaining, easy to comprehend and put it in a 'nutshell' that brilliantly. Great stuff!!
This is hands down, THE best video I have seen on RU-vid. My attention span for videos is approx. 15 minutes, but I couldn't wait to watch more of this. I paused, and laughed and cried and smacked myself for being a big old dummy about some things. Now I understand more. I joined your website and am now a loyal student of yours. Thank you and bless you. Life is too short, art... I mean design might as well be fun, gonna die anyway!
Mike, You are a wonderful artist and teacher. When teaching animation character design I found like yourself, a positive attitude plays a huge part in the expression of who you are going to be and what you have to give in your life. I loved everything you said and showed here, and I will seek out everything you have to offer to gain a further insight to improve my own art as well to teach others. Currently, I am living in Finland. May we meet one day and share. Phil Mendez
This tutorial is so amazing! I've resigned myself thinking my way of drawing would take forever to improve, but I find myself trying out your techniques and tips. Although I'm just copying your samples, I'm loving the results. Your wit and jokes have indeed made drawing more fun again. Thank you so much!
I took his class in Kansas maybe 30 years ago and no one in Landscape Architecture or any kind of design really should go more than a year without a good dose of Mike Lin!
So lucky to have found this lesson! Mike Lin, THE Mike Lin? for real? Wow, I am inspired by this not only a great designer and artist, but a very wise, very smart man. Thank you for your generous spirit, Mike, it's a privilege to be in your class.
You are the best! We used your ideas and technics in our Site Planning class! THANK YOU, Mike Lin! And thanks to Prof. Bonnie Johnson who took your class!
I took his 2 week course in Manhattan, KS about 14 years ago. At the end of the two weeks, he held a fun little session with the students about cool new websites, devices, etc. it was at that moment, I learned of Pandora radio when no one I knew had even heard of it yet and it was months before I heard someone talk about it. I sorta felt like one of the first to sign up for it! Haha. That was a great class with a lot of laughs. Great memories!!
Took notes of this awesome lesson. Here are the tricks : For the outline : - Constant (dead) & Variable (alive) fuzzy lines - Hit Go Hit Line - Overlap Corner (don't be tight and an idiot) - Professional Dot & Professional Gap (because you don't have a choice and the gap is shiny and it sparks) - Mechanical Line (much faster) & Free hand line (forget the free hand) - Positive/Negative line (don't draw the inside to have less problems in your life, remember you are a designer, no big deal) - Outline needs to be darker (impress them all) - Tone line is lighter and it's inside For the Tone line : - Over Edge ( the color needs to be lighter; touch the papy and tell it that you are coming and that it should just shut up ) - Professional line (very important; tone line on 45 degree ) [To be continued]
I really enjoyed watching the first time and after drinking a couple glasses of wine I watched a second time I really LOVED it thanks for putting things in focus
Such a pleasure to watch. So many wonderful tricks. This is really going to help me in producing storyboards for the many ideas I have that never get anywhere because I always go overboard trying to impress artistic product... yeah, its a bad habit. I really like producing wonderful things to look at, but to intuit into people's thoughts sounds so much more productive. I could spend my whole life illustrating millions of images just convey one of the "epics" I have in my brain... you're right we're are going to die, no need to become a tortured artist in the process. Were I to do that, where would I find time for my elders, children, family, friends and strangers? I'm sure I don't speak for myself alone I say your philosophy is great, and it's always good to be reminded about things. Note to self: I'm going to have to watch this a hundred times and go through the transcription to time stamp the highlights in the comment section.
Thank You for a fresh lOOk at an old subject.I though I would pee my pants when you used your GI joe for up close perspective....You are an original Mike....thanx again.
You have a wonderful teaching style: well-thought-out instructions presented in a funny and engaging way (with a good dose of wisdom sprinkled in there also). ❤️ I hope you'll consider making more videos. This one was great. Thank you for posting it.
wow, this video is super cool!!!!!!!! i like it SO MUCH my teacher will never tell me this thing i really like learning about the thing i love the most!! and you did it with a funny, teaching ,lovely , cool way really would love it if you upload more and more and more videos like this one omg THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
I love your humor! I love your method. I love that we are going to die, bit. Excellent. Take it down to what it is. Simple Thank you so much for making me feel so much more free!
You didnt remember your manners when you burped at 1:07:34 you naughty boy. Always remember to turn your camera OFF when you have finished doing a video. Very good techniques, you make it look simple.
best tutorial ever! So much art instruction goes too far into the details too quickly. This tutorial makes me feel better about my own work. I LOVE working quickly. I even prefer looking at works that have that 'unfinished' quick feel about them, however I still feel the need to create more finished looking works and I don't know why...They don't interest me because I feel like I'm 'getting away with something' if my work doesn't have that finished polish and it's still good. - I also LOVE your attitude..we're all gonna die someday, so RUIN that page. Damn right!
Ash Bell Well, if you are a designer, then drawing is just a process to relate your ideas to clients. But if you are an artist, then you should paint well for the purpose of selling it to public as the final painting is a product. Therefore, I always tell designers not to draw well as their job is to express the ideas so drawing they produced is only a process. Hope you agree. Mike
Lol!!!! I'm just in 0:38, I decided to write about how I didn't expect much of this video, but I had 2 laughs already! And I see other people saying they had fun!! Will definetly finish it!!!
WOW. YOU ARE SUCH AN AMAZING PERSON. You just inspired me today to improve my skills and have a good attitude espceially when it comes to rendering. I'm afraid of colors. But starting today, i'll practice very hard and KILL those sheets of paper XD I signed up at your website and I really want to attend your seminar :( THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE
dyongin Hope you will attend one of our workshops in the future date. I can assure you that the workshop experience will boost your confidence level beyond your dream.
I laughed and learned so much!!! You are full of humor and to be honest... I loved hearing myself laugh!!!:) thank you, sir!!! Love the “share what you know, you’re gonna die....”
Drew Calica I also wish I had my graphic teachers like myself when I was in school. Most of mine were trying to discourage me, or never taught me the straight forward tips. However because of my bad experience of learning graphics, it made me to become a better teacher as I understand my workshop attendees better so I can relate to them easier.
I really hope that you will continue to inspire and motivate more students and of course professors/ teachers to do their best in training, teaching and understanding their students. I salute you. Sir!
