Previously I hated doing cross-hatching with graphite pencils because drawing was too slow. But a charcoal or pastel pencils with Proko's method of sharpening makes work faster and easier. :)

@2:47 The struggle is real. I must have destroyed 20+ pencils whilst trying to learn this method. I was being too forceful to begin with, which I blame on years of just quickly jamming a pencil in a sharpener. If you're struggling like I did; it helps to think about it as more of a craft. Kind of like carving out a wooden kitchen utensil perhaps. Reframe it in your mind, be patient and delicately take off small shavings of wood at a time, without bearing down too hard with the blade. Craft it to a nice point. I realised there's quite an art to refining your artistic tools!

I have a history of the schmancy art store stuff like a needed eraser(i call mine the blob because it has like 3 in it, haha) and i still have a large collection of various sketch pencils. But after beholding the works of various successful artists, and having used the method for going on a year, I'm pretty sold on the more simple (dare i even say elegant?) method of just using a # 2 and a pink erase.

I love your sense of humor. I find myself not only watching for the instructional content, but also waiting to see what quirky or funny little thing you will do make us chuckle. It's always just enough to keep things light-hearted, but small enough that it doesn't interfere with the main content. So glad you showed the pencil breaking while trying to sharpen it and you shouting out that expletive. I can identify as I just recently tried this method. Right on the money Stan.

The Papermate 1.0 pen that usually comes in packs of ten or more and sells next to nothing has an astonishing range from vapor pencil to clean black. I always have one in my pocket, and usually doodle on the white areas of my New York Times. It's like some trade secret. The range of densities is crazy. Get the black with no fancy anything. Right now 60 of them on ebay for 10 bucks free shipping.

Interesting. After almost a year of using mainly "on hand" leftover materials (#2s, those awful plasticky erasers, etc.), I have come to the opposite conclusion: the good stuff really is worth it. #2s require so much pressure, my pointer usually ends up battered. For graphite I'm reluctant to use anything harder than 2B-4B now. Of course, it depends on your individual approach and needs...but I find softer media so much nicer when using the side of the pencil. As for kneaded eraser: heavenly!

It took me half of my charcoal pencil, until I got it perfectly sharped with a long point. Unfortunately the blade I was using was a cheap, paper thin blade that it so flexible that it kept folding under stress when applied force, which gave me a few memorable cuts, lol. I finally knew why the lead kept breaking, apparently this is as skill and no way an easy task as the lead is so delicate that even the slightest amount of pressure applied to it while sharpening it might break the lead completely. The sand paper is a great Idea! I am finally proud of myself that I was able to get it that perfect, Ah the great feeling of doing something after so much of frustration and deep cuts. Thanks for such a great video.

Each artist is entitled to their own taste. As for your "on hand" supplies, I don't know what to tell you. Mine shade beautifully with minimal pressure. I will break down and go as soft as 4B if i need a nice dark shadow but that is about it.(Like for a high contrast piece) I do want to note I use "Dixon" and "Rubber Erase" brands. That and I don't really start that dark on my sketches so I guess I don't need to use that much pressure? ~shrugs~ different strokes for different folks.

this is actually a very useful tip :))) thanks :) It's not that I haven't thought about some relatively close options, but I thought the charcoal would stick to the film and if I decided to remove the drawing and put another one inside, the residual charcoal would just make one big mess on the new drawing. I'm probably over dramatizing at the moment, I have big problems getting some really high quality drawing tools.

You need to simplify, thats is the basis of it all. Also it depends on what type of figure drawing it is, if it is gestures, you ahve to focus on the motion and rythm of the pose, if it is a more traditional but rather short figure study you have to isolate the rythm too but mroe prominently the mass and proportions of the model, wich you can accomplish various ways with a combination of line and tone.
