This video showcases comic book legend and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee drawing perhaps his signature character, Batman. Jim walks us through his process of bringing Gotham's brooding detective to life on paper, from the first step of the pencilling process to the finished inks. Produced by myself, Mike Avila, and edited by Michael Schifino (excellent work, Michael!)

It's easier because many details like eyes are hidden under the simple mask.

If you ever attend a convention where Jim is appearing and doing a panel/drawing demo, I highly recommend the experience. He's one of, if not THE best, artists at walking you through the artistic process.

"The drawing tells you where it wants to go and when it wants to be done" That is possibly the hardest thing for any artist. Knowing when your piece is finished, and if it isn't, what it might need. Separating what you believe something should look like vs what it could look like to help the piece is a challenge.

Hugo thats what i.feel whenever theres a task of doing art stuff, especially when its come to the background, if you bright it too much it”ll steal the main spotlight ... but if you darken it way too low or too dark it”ll make the whole picture look like crap

Jim was my biggest inspiration for drawing when I was a teenager back n the day. The way he draws his characters has his signature unlike any other. And I could instinctively tell his art from others who penned the same characters.... Wow

Watching him work you realize why he had such an impact on DC. His style is unique and pops off the page. Exactly what you want in a comic. His anatomy is a 7.5/10 but his execution is a 11/10.

I took a life drawing class and they also taught the block like drawing before actually putting in the details and it really does help flesh out the artwork better.

Jim’s been inspiring me since ‘89. Nobody asked, but I did kind of like his minimalists style when he drew x-men back in the early nineties a little more than all the detail he puts into his DC work. He was young and eager to impress, in sure that had something to do with it. Just peep a jim Lee x-men drawing from the nineties. Shit is FIRE with the muted tones.
