Song Produced by: Tyrone @Omgitstyrone
Video Directed / Edited by: Deven Morgan @devenmorgan
Brandkings, in collaboration with Seattle Centers Cultural Programs and 50 Next: Seattle Hip-Hop Worldwide is proud to announce that Draze has released his new music video for the single "The Hood Ain't The Same" featured on the 50 Next: Seattle Hip-Hop Worldwide compilation found at www.50nextseattle.com.
The "Hood Ain't The Same" video release is on the heels of the tremendously successful event "Through the Eyes of Art " in which the video was debuted on the jumbo screen (33ft tall and 60ft wide) of The EMP Museum's Sky Church, to an audience of over 650 people. Among those in attendance was Seattle City Councilmember Bruce Harrell, Deputy Mayor Hyeok Kim, The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle President Pamela Banks, R&B songstress Choklate, Grammy Award winning songwriter and singer, India Arie and many more!
"The Hood Ain't The Same" is a song dedicated to highlighting the effects of gentrification on Seattle's Central area and south end communities. Throughout the video, Draze takes listeners/viewers on a journey through the rapidly changing urban areas of Seattle. Lines like "I don't reminisce when I drive through this hood I feel pain, I ain't proud of these new developments I feel shame..." are illuminated as viewers are treated to images of several restaurants and staples of the community that once thrived but are no longer in existence.
Along with capturing the changing faces of Seattle, the video features several cameos from Seattle area artists and patriarchs past and present. "We could have just shot a bunch of buildings but it is the people who give these structures life. We wanted to highlight some of the real people touching the real community at a grass roots level." says Draze. The video features cameos by Eddie Rye (Community Activist), Blak Stax (Seattle Hip Hop group), Kawanna Perine (Founder of Sisters Against Lupus), WyKing Garrett (founder of Umoja Fest) Rev Aaron Williams (Senior Pastor at Mt Zion Baptist Church) and several others.
Draze is a veteran wordsmith with a unique skill for storytelling and delivering raw, emotionally charged lyrics that capture the ears of the masses. Recognizing his gift, Draze felt compelled to shed light on the topic of gentrification. "As artists I think we have a responsibility to tell our truth to the people, regardless to how uncomfortable it may be. My city is alive but my community is dying, maybe this is my effort or Eulogy to get someone to care." says Draze.
Draze is available for interviews. Please contact 206.508.9990 to set up a time that is convenient.

It's happened in new orleans half the black population left after Katrina and now white people moving in it used to be 80% black and now it's 60% black. Same thing with Harlem and Brooklyn. They trying to increase the white population of the US.

Glad these landmarks were documented in a video/song like this before they're gone. I'm assuming we are around the same age (35). My homie still lives across the street from Rotary and damn it aint the same!

I grew up just off aurora south of Seattle and everything is messed up around there. It's all cracked out tweakers and just a few blocks over its calm suburbs. Shows real class division.

Born and raised until 8 out of cities in southern California, then parents split and I went to live with my mom in Alaska. I've been in the Northwest awhile, I mean the whole Northwest; lived in coastal and northern Alaska for years, down to Washington (years east and west of the Cascades), Oregon, been to the Yukon, B.C., Idaho, Montana, etc. Now spent the last 5 years in Seattle (still a young one), my family is spread throughout the country, California, Florida, New York, South Carolina, my dad and brothers from the southwest, mother and sisters from the northwest. Point is we spread out as we grew up from the west coast. My family has known a lot of folks out West and across to the East coast now too. I'm laying my family history out to say on behalf of my blood's experiences this song has Draze calling out real problems that people gotta wake up to. Our government is not serving the people to the standards that the richest government should. Our cities economies are *built* on quick growth from large powerful conglomerates, Seattle is experiencing what most cities have done in U.S. history when they grow in population and have really sexy markets like working for tech giants or Boeing, it's like what happened to the Bay Area; price of housing goes fucking crazy high hella poor people and homeless get pushed out of the city, and the huge crowd of people moving into Seattle are living there a large percentage of the time on a job offer, taking their money home after 5 years. That impacts the culture in ways that Draze helps me to think about reppin that 206, glad I decided to look into more local artist heads. It's a hard and confusing time out here, remember to have love for everybody people, Seattle is facing the tension of an extreme U.S. culture melting pot and I want its people to rise to the test. All love out west and to the rest on God

+nathan rene I remember the old Holy Park Projects back then. Really good times there. I wish they didn't tear down perfectly good homes. They could've been remodeled to today's standard. New Holly look a'int the same. They just look really expensive now.

As someone with a lot of family in Seattle, I have seen Seattle change so much. Seattle is more white than I remember it. There are all these skyscrapers not only in downtown but in the Central District. I remember when I would go visit my grandparents growing up that there used to be a lot of black peoplein the CD and now most of the people are either white. What is going down in Seattle is sad. All of these white, hipster restaurants are popping up where there used to be businesses owned by black people.

This video is so true and makes me sad. Your mom shouldn't have been forced out by property taxes going up. The city ought to have grandfathered her and everyone like her in so the neighborhood could keep as much of its character for as long as possible. Gentrification sucks when it's done like this. Actually gentrification just sucks, since it's pretty much always done like this. On another topic, some of my friends and I are trying to create CC captions for our Deaf friends on Amara and it would be awesome if you'd upload the lyrics to this video's description so it would be easier for some of us doing the transcribing since some of us are also hard of hearing in various degrees.

+Draze Music 2:04 You should've had the director get the old "Philly's Best" on Union. Not the spot where Uncle Ike's is now, but down the hill. Those guys are not Philly's Best, since the owner got capped like back in 2003.

You wanna talk about real hood?! Come to skagit county and rap about the dope and deaths in the streets and in the county. You wanna hang with your own race? Come to skagit county where we all are the same. Black, White ,Brown it don’t matter as long as we got folks who make it better. I seen the sick and the pained, the elderly and lame, shit I got two jobs but they both are the same. Taking care of people that nobody claim no wonder I’m so sad this job got me fade. Pretty soon I’ll need a change maybe I’ll take a trip to tulip lane. I’ve seen Death, sick and hurt maybe somebody else will make it work.
