Drazen Petrovic: The Player Who Changed The NBA Forever

There are a ton of European players in the NBA today, much more than back in the 1980s and 1990s. Drazen Petrovic was a huge reason why the NBA started opening its doors to European players, giving them the chance to be drafted. Petrovic changed the perception of European players and without him, we might not ever see players like Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Giannis, and others get the opportunity to make it to the NBA.
I make all kinds of NBA videos which include trivia, analysis, player stories, countdowns, conspiracies, and mysteries. Make sure to leave a like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

The Nets would have been so serious in the mid 90s, Drazen's death truly impacted the careers of Kenny Anderson and Derrick Coleman, as well as Chuck Daly. People forget that at this time Coleman considered himself in his own opinion to be a Top 10 player in the NBA. Once Drazen died, Chuck Daly got totally burned out and had to quit coaching the Nets. What could have been.... As a kid I always thought the 1993 Playoffs were one of the greatest of all time (Suns recover from 0-2 deficit vs Lakers, Mourning series winner over Celtics, Sonics/Jazz, Rockets/Clippers & Cavaliers/Nets all go the distance, Jordan series winner over Cavaliers, Sonics/Rockets Game 7, Suns/Sonics Game 7, Birth of "Go NY Go NY Go intro", Bulls recover from 0-2 deficit vs Knicks: Charles Smith blocked by Pippen in legendary sequence, Bulls/Suns legendary Finals: Paxson hits series winning 3 pointer) And then it transitioned into the saddest period it possibly could....McHale retires, Jordan's father is murdered, Petrovic is killed in auto accident, Reggie Lewis dies of cardiac arrest, Jordan retires, Laimbeer loses his desire to play....I was crushed as a kid. What a great and horrible time to be a basketball fan I will never forget after Drazen died, the NBA Jam arcade machines became haunted, the announcer would sometimes scream, "Petrovic!" for no reason, even if you weren't playing as the Nets. People used to say his ghost was in the game.

Thanks for making this video, it's highly appreciated. I would just like to mention few facts about Drazen's incredible shooting while he was with the Nets. Not many know this, but Drazen is the only player in NBA history who shot 50% FG / 40% 3P for entire career, while frequently attempting three-pointers (others on that list are mostly big men who shot only few 3Ps in their career, so can't count them). In his two full seasons with the Nets, he averaged 20+ PPG on 50% FG / 44% 3P, as you showed in this video. Only 7 players in NBA history averaged 20+ PPG on 50/44 shooting in a season, but Drazen is the only one who did it twice. If he only made 11 more FTs in 1992-93 season, he would have joined the 50-40-90 club. I believe that if he stayed alive, he would have good chances to join the club. Prior to the All-Star weekend in 1993, Drazen averaged 23.4 PPG on 52% FG / 50% 3P, but he was not selected for the Eastern team mainly because he was European and underrated. He was so mad that he refused to participate in 3P contest. Luckily, later that season he became the first European player who made the All-NBA team. And before Dirk arrived, Petrovic was the only European player in NBA who was a go-to guy and the face of the team he was playing for. Drazen didn't have much time to put crazy career totals, but if we judge by how good he was while he was playing, he is definitely one of the best shooters ever.

Check..and you are right but 'best nba players ever' is a bit over the top, he would have a very nice career for the next few years, at maybe 22-26ppg, few all-star appearances, a solid play-offs contender, hardly a champion bc the Bulls those years, and that's it ...and that's ok with me, as an old croatian fan of Dražen

Kukoc was an awesome 6th man but I would not claim him to be the best. I think John 'Hando' Havlicek was better. Also I consider Ginobili a bit better and more versatile 6th man than Kukoc was.

Crazy how much 30 year old Europeans come into the league as rookies (Antic, Huertas, Teodosic, Kaun, etc) but for most american players it's nearly impossivle to make the league if you haven't already by the age of 28. Goes to show the difference in refined skill and fundamentals you get from Europe.

fei li drazen was probably the better shooter but bird was clearly the better all round player. drazen was a shooting machine. bird could be whatever the celtics needed (except athletic). few players had the ability to impose their will so dominantly that the league seemingly bent to their whims ( jordan, magic, bird). i dont think drazen was that guy. maybe he didnt get enough of a chance

there are not many ppl who will fully understand what "averaging 37.7 points in yugoslavian league" means. Yugoslavia had; both in football and basketball, perhaps hardest damn leagues on the planet. Hardest, not the best. In that league, when leader of the season had played against last aside, he would go for a point. Imagine Barcelona playing against last in the league at their stadium and being happy if they pull a remi.

It would be nice if someone could upload Šibenka games from that time so that everyone can see how was it. I think that competition in basketball, handball, waterpolo in then Yugoslavia was really brutal, mainly because of fanatical supporters, add a high quality and you get fantastic matches to watch and enjoy. This was the only time and place where we showed what can happen when we combine hard work with talent and passion. All the failures of our new countries are due to our lack of abillity to create an enviroment for talented and hard working people to thrive. Sport was the only thing where that ever happened and it was used as cover up for all our other failures. Maybe it'll change. I hope it does.
