After boasting to Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) that he's a master teacher of the intricacies of race, Dre (Anthony Anderson) has a talk with Bow's cousin, Gary (guest star Rob Huebel), about education and how to combat racial disparities in public school funding. Gary, however, isn't willing to make the sacrifices needed to make change, leading Dre to question how much his lessons actually accomplished. From 'black-ish' season 7, episode 10, 'What About Gary?' Watch black-ish TUESDAY 9|8c on ABC, streaming, on demand, and Hulu.

Same. At least Gary is trying. Most white people I know talked about George Floyd, but then never brought it up again. Gary showed he was at least trying to learn and become more educated continuously after the event. Better than nothing to me.

@@ZackEdwards1234 You'll find that a lot of the problems white people have with the system only exist because some rich asshole wanted to close off the benefits of the system to black people. When you solve issues for black people, white people tend to benefit. Remember affirmative action as an initiative to end the education disparity caused by only white men getting into good colleges and only their white male descendants getting to reap the benefits as legacy applicants? Affirmative Action was put in place to provide higher educational opportunities for white women (also historically closed off from higher education) and people of color, and you know who benefited the most? White women. That's just one example. If you need a selfish reason, you will find one.

I understand the issue with redlining and school zoning, it’s messed up. But at the end of the day, Gary has a right to send his children to any school he chooses. Also, he seemed passionate about changing the system so he would probably be willing to donate to the public schools.

Gotta say, Dre is absolutely correct with the issue of segregated schools and "white flight" (what he is referring to with white parents setting up charter schools for their children to avoid public school). If Gary isn't willing to send his white children to public schools, which will actually bring in the funding black students needs, then he isn't solving the problem. He's also sending out the implied message that a black-majority public school isn't good enough for his white children -- which is completely counter to what he is saying about how terrible it is that black children don't get good education in public school. Sorry, but if you don't want to do the work, don't show up.

I don't think he should mess with his children's education. They are kids, not tools to be used in social struggles.
@rachelfox8108

@@marcosnonato I agree, so I wonder why you don't find it odd that schools in the US get more funding based on how many white children they have registered there? Isn't that using children as tools in social struggles?
@wasd_totallyreal_dsaw9865
@wasd_totallyreal_dsaw9865 3 года назад
I get Dre's point, and maybe it's because I'm not black nor american, but isn't that trying to fix a dam with a bandaid? If the schools are financed by how rish the kids parents are, that's a flawed system that gary isn't gonna fix by putting his kids in the school. sure, it may help a little in that specific school, assuming that, like dre said, they do have the funding and aren't using it, ans gary surely can afford tutors and extracurriculars so his kids education won't suffer much, but that won't fix the problem underneath. School's should be funded per number of kids, not per neighborhood. A system made to be flawed will continue to be flawed.
@rachelfox8108
@rachelfox8108 3 года назад
@@wasd_totallyreal_dsaw9865 The issue isn't that the schools are funded by how rich the parents are -- not necessarily. The issue is that school funding is dictated by the district in their catchment area, the residents of whose tax dollars go to that school. Thanks to redlining -- where banks decided they would only give loans to areas that weren't marked out in red on their maps, and those areas being where the majority of the residents are Black -- there is less funding for schools with a Black student population. This is how the situation started, back when all schools were segregated. However, when segregation was struck down in the sixties and white children were bussed in to integrate, schools suddenly found the funding to improve the facilities, the books, the level of teaching available. It improved things for Black students, but it didn't get any better, and in fact, schools in the North of the country especially are still very segregated because white parents are sending their children to better schools, and lying on forms to get their children into better schools outside their catchment area (not that Black parents haven't tried this too -- a single Black mother was sent to prison for putting on a form that her son lived with another relative to get him into a better school, when he wasn't living there). That's white flight. It's nice to want a better standard of education for your child, but running away to other schools to make it better for your white child does actually make the educational segregation worse for Black children, while ensuring that your own children only grow up making friends with people who look like them (which tends to make them ignorant of the differences of experience of others, which allows them to perpetuate the racist biases they pick up from their peers). The only way to change things to make it better for all students -- including white ones -- is to keep the schools mixed. The funding will follow the white children and make sure they're cared for, and it will benefit the Black children in their classrooms too.
@jamesp3902
@jamesp3902 3 года назад
The problem for the show, both Gary and Dre are doing the exact same thing. Dre's argument being; if the rich and powerful sent their children to public school, public school funding would increase. It would be better to use the Dutch system where each student is allocated the same government funding.

Structural change in the funding of schools is the only way for real change. It’s unreasonable to ask black and white families to keep the schools at a mixed level to boost funding. The system itself is racist and we need black educated ppl To get into power and change things. I don’t think Gary’s kid getting a possibility lesser education for Gary to prove a point is the right thing to do

I feel like aside from Ruby, Dre is the only character who has a more "black" personality, and is also the darkest skinned aside from the twins who are just kids. And he gets nothing but hate from the fandom. Like people get on him for being overprotective, and old school, and taking a lot of pride in his masculinity, when these are all part of black culture, especially not wealthy black culture. While the same fanbase says rainbow is too good for him, when she is significantly whiter, grew up richer, with hippie parents, yet her character tends to have a sense of narcissism too. I just feel like you can say you you support the black community by watching a show with a black cast, but then hate on the blackest parts of it. Also people say he doesn't do anything for his community cause he sends his kids to private school, and tends to look out for himself at work, but the show has stated that he was a serious fighter for change in his youth so . . .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you want to make a difference and send your kids to the school of your choice, can't you start a scholarship and send another kid to private school who otherwise won't be able to, or start a fundraiser/ send money yourself (IDK what the price would be) to make it so there is no more lunch debt at the public school or donate supplies to these kids school (like pass out free notebooks, pencils, calculators to keep, and to go breakfast foods for them, etc) trying to stop a charter school or getting places to stop kicking out people to try and achieve a "higher earning" crowd of people and contacting politicians doesn't seem to do much and only takes minutes or hours in total and not continuous commitment.
