It's my dream art haul! These are pricey art supplies I thought I wouldn't be able to own for a while, but thanks to a gift from my husband for Valentine's Day, my dream became a reality! Come into my snowy, Northwoods studio with me and let's open up my dream supplies! Plus, you get to meet my husband! This is part one, as the video was getting a little long. Part two will be up next Friday!
Happy creating!

Speaking from decades of experience I can tell you that auditioning (swatching) your supplies is VERY important and efficient professionally and so much fun & therapeutic personally...so I say for all reasons - "GO FORI IT!!". You have a gem of a husband (good for a jeweler for sure). Someday maybe we'll get to meet the kids too.

I was just about to say "What! Who says it isn't helpful!" Especially for mediums like watercolors that can granulate and look completely different from what it looks like in the pan or freshly squeezed out. My oil paints too! I NEED to know which colors are more transparent or more opaque and some colors can look black squeezed from the tube but when you put a thin layer down it is a beautiful bright purple (in the case of Dioxazine) for instance. It can completely ruin a piece if I grab a color that isn't transarent, isn't opaques, doesn't granulate, or does, if you need the exact opposite. Swatch away! Even if it was useless, who cares! IT'S FUN!!!

If it slides, get a rubber mat for under carpets to prevent carpets from sliding. It'll keep it in its place even when you get rough with your easel. These mats are available in big and small sizes, and you can cut them to size if you can't find one in your preferred size. I wish you a fast recovery. Thanks for sharing your art haul.

Awe, your husband is a sweetie pie, so happy for you that he's supportive. And I prefer the videos just as they are, with the unboxing, swatching and demos in separate videos. It's easier to find time to watch them when they're a bit shorter as you've been doing. But regardless, I'm still going to watch them lol! I've never tried soft pastels but always wanted to. And I too, struggle with being a realistic painter, and I think pastels might loosen me up a bit lol. I'm a watercolour portrait artist, although what I really love is a more loose, impressionistic style. I struggle with that!
@winterwoodsstudio
@winterwoodsstudio Год назад
Oh you should try the pastels! It's helping me SO much! And I sort of feel like once I've broken things down into "blobs" of color, it's easier to see things that way for other mediums as well, if that makes sense? And I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos the way they are! Thank you so much for the feedback! 💓

This was such a fun art haul reveal. I couldn't help but smile. As far as video length goes, I find I prefer that the video's (reveal, swatching, etc) aren't all lumped together. It makes it easier to watch on my lunch break. Also, when it comes to new art supplies (which I have a weakness for) I find it very helpful and satisfying to swatch. Anyway, that is my two cents. Keep up the great work. You are talented and a joy to watch.

Oh my goodness.... you must be my spirit sister. I have RA and Fibro and art supplies give me so much happiness! Bad thing/good thing is that I tend to buy a lot of paint supplies in the middle of the night when I can't sleep and I'm hurting. My husband is my big supporter, too, and he will get me anything that I want or need. He watches me suffer. It's really hard to be creative when you are hurting or suffering from your disease. GLad you found your way back to art. It's hard. Good luck and enjoy your endorphins that you get from your art and art supplies!

I also have a chronic illness. It's made art very difficult but I do what I can when I can and it brings joy when I'm able. To cheer myself up last year I also got a set of the Sennelier Paris Collection. They're beautiful. Very soft, but silky and so highly pigmented. They have lovely coverage. I do mostly landscape and I just adore them. You're going to have so much fun! I think your swatching videos are fine separate. It makes the video more manageable. And you should do what is best for you. If uploading is difficult keep breaking it up. You won't be able to please everyone so please yourself first.

I love the Sennelier ones as well, but I personally prefer soft pastels that are a bit harder. I use soft pastels in combination with pastel pencils for the smaller details. I hope you’ll get your studio soon! As a mum with two sons myself I definitely understand the need for your own space. 😉

I just ordered some gouache from blick! I like that and watercolor, and I haven’t found my art style yet…I realize while watching this one, that I love the way pastels look, but I dislike the way they feel on my hands, similar to how I felt about ceramics when I was younger…I hope your meds kick in soon!

Your new art supplies sound awesome! As far as pastels, have you tried Invisible Glove yet? It's like a lotion you put on but it dries to a barrier, and it protects your hands from your art supplies. It helps a little. I added a link to the description of this video in the every day supplies section if you want to try it. I always use it when oil painting, in case there are heavy metals in the paints. Thanks for taking the time to watch!

👋👋👋 Hey Art friend! That’s such a great Valentine’s set of goodies. So glad your hub’s is so supportive. It really does help to distract from the pain. I hope your flare subsides soon, 💜 I have similar easel for the same reasons. I find a little rectangle of that rubbery shelf liner underneath, plus a 5lb hand weight resting across the back crossbar keeps it in place. I love it. That pastel book is excellent. I saw an Artist Network video interview with Liz & she teaches art foundations so that beginner paste lists can get out of beginner mode. Her video’s are awesome too. All your pastels are lovely…I have the Paris set also…too pretty for words. I’ll be interested to hear how you like those Rembrandts vs nupastels. I’ve been tempted by their 90 half stick set at Jackson’s & may get them at their next sale. Looking forward to all your swatching & new art explorations. Have loads of fun! 🤗
@winterwoodsstudio
@winterwoodsstudio Год назад
That is such an excellent tip for the easel! Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to try that! I' not using my five pound weights anyway! 😂And I am very much enjoying the Rembrandts already for their hardness in my underpainting, and I've been eyeing the 90 half stick set as well! The only thing I miss are the square shape, for their hard edges for details. If they had that, they'd be perfect!

That Valentine's Day mega-gift was such a nice thing for hubby to do to help you get through this bad spell that you're currently having. And judging by that glowing expression as you opened each box, it's having the desired effect. As regards the question you asked, I have no strong preference about seeing swatching at the same time as the supplies are unboxed - but I do think that a lot of people would struggle to fit long videos into their busy lives. I tend to be relatively unfazed by videos up to 30 minutes in length, but if they are getting up to the hour mark, I often have to pass on them, hoping to watch them on one of those days where there's nothing else to do ... but those empty days tend to occur only on 30 February, I've heard ;-) Look forward to seeing what you create with those gorgeous soft pastels over the forthcoming weeks and months. Thanks for sharing the joy of your unboxing with us all. Take care.

Hi, I've enjoyed your art haul videos! You juxt appeared in my "Recommended" list Sad to hear that Nupastels are being discontinued! 😥 I used to work with pastels a lot. (But I'm currently obsessed with watercolor.) Have you tried Conte Crayons? They are a lot like Nupastels in hardness and color laydown, and there are big color sets you can buy. I'm sorry to hear about your Crohn's disease! I hope you get the right medication soon! I'm currently dealing with recovery from a broken wrist (dominant hand) and associated surgery. Hi Amy! I just found your channel and I am loving your content so far. Your story is so inspiring!! I also love the impressionists (Van Gogh and Degas give me the chills) and have a tendency to draw/paint more realistically. !!! That pastel travel palette is awesome! (I don't even use pastels that often, but I love collecting them. All the colors! :D) Also, I don't know who said that swatching isn't that valuable, but they are clearly just curmudgeons who want to steal joy. My color charts are completely necessary for me to keep track of what I have AND find it efficiently when I'm in the flow. Plus, it's fun. So the anti-fun police can just keep their opinions to themselves. :D

Congrats on this awesome haul/gift! Enjoy every little bit of it. I wanted to come in and offer just a tiny heads up re: the Sennelier soft pastels: you can definitely use them when they are broken. In fact, professional pastelists out there use only bits and pieces of pastel sticks. That way they can use the side of the stick to cover a bigger area, or for expressive strokes, whereas the corners or sharp points are use for detail work. Take care and feel better soon ❤
