Dream boat project 1976 Mako: How to do fiberglass work

On todays episode we repair parts of the fiberglass on our 22ft Mako. Our main goal for this episode was reinforcing the bow area as it was very weak and flimsy from the long life the boat has lived. We Still have a ways to go for renovation as we paint the top side and hull! Stay tuned for more restoration

I love how humble you are. And I love it that you guys restore the 76. Thats year I graduated high school. 🤪 My first boat was a 1960 Sea ray. 18 plus I bought that saved up for it when I was 20 years old. I hope you guys get a lot of subscribers good luck to you.

You guys do nice work. We ran Mako's when I was in the Coast Guard off Long Island (in the 80's before you were born, god I'm old......LOL). They are tough and handle choppy conditions really well. It will be one serious fishing rig when you're done. Also a big fan of the center console. Ours were Volvo Penta inboard out boards which were nice but I like your outboard set up better for fishing (also love the transom jack, will give you much better performance) , it gives you more deck space. Looking forward to more videos and seeing how it turns out!!! Thanks

Just a tip for your next project...if you pre-drill your holes in the plywood...you won't struggle with screwing them down and will save you some frustration. Also...just curious why you wouldn't reinforce the entire top section or round off the plywood edge to eliminate the lip on the side of the plywood. That edge looks like it could be a toe stubber if you aren't paying attention when you get a fish on. All in all looks like a fun project...can't wait to see when it's finished.

@larrylarry5300
@larrylarry5300 4 года назад
So you sand, then apply resin, lay on the glass, and apply resin again. You did that three times, right? So you don't have to let each layer dry before you add additional layers?
@young11984
@young11984 4 года назад
Correct, as long as the resin isnt sitting up you can layer nearly as much as you want. Be careful when getting thicker than 3/8” when its above 80* outside as the curing can get quite hot and possibly warp or bubble up if not rolled in good

A one inch paint brush is faster an smooths the smuts better than the popsicle sticks. I've built boats, cars (Avantis) and truck hoods. Resin with fiber glass clippings mix in with 10 cc of catalious. Also using a 1" brush and rollers push the air out better than just rolling, the 1" brush makes a hugh difference in removing air.

Should have sanded all gel coat off from underneath, and resin glued the timber to the boat. The way you've done it will last a year, maybe 2 if your lucky. Board will pull away from the boat, fibreglass will crack and will just start rotting out
@reddysteddy2195
@reddysteddy2195 4 года назад
Was about to say the same. Grind off all gel coat, and a resin bog mix with talc and/or glass bubble filler sandwiched in between, and clamped instead of screwed until cured before glassing it down.
@nickg7205
@nickg7205 3 года назад
+2 You guys already had the grinder and fiberglass materials out. You should have done it the proper way. Unfortunately, this is a hack job at best, and will be lucky to last 2 years. The lesson viewers should take from this video is how not to do this kind of job, sorry.

@chiphill4856
@chiphill4856 3 года назад
Why not use chopped strand mat and resin, in lieu of 5200 and screws to hold your core? That way it all dries into one solid piece. 5200 is flexible and the glass around it is much less so, increasing chances of cracking. Also: if anyone tries to cut into that bow later in life, they will get a surprise when they hit a screw. Not hating, just asking.
