Gattaca is a seriously underrated science fiction film, exploring the idea's of how far should science take us, DNA discrimination and the power of the human dream. So today let's have a look into those.

Well done. There's even more we could tease out. The film works with a spirit/body dualism. In a society, totally obsessed with the body, Vincent is the only person left with a soul. Jerome Morrow (Marrow: a soft fatty substance in the cavities of bones, in which blood cells are produced) becomes Vincent's body while Vincent becomes the Spirit of Jerome. That final scene is a symbolic depiction of death. In leaving for the stars, Vincent's body is destroyed while his spirit lives on. Nicely done. Love the channel.

This line also hints at the possibility that Vincent doesn't plan to return to Earth. His heart is, as he says, 10,000 beats overdue and, I believe, he hopes to make it to his destination but does not expect to make the return trip.

My favorite film of all time. Watched it in middle school in my English class, and I really liked it. Then I got to watch it again my second year of high school in my biology class. I fell in love with it. Everything about the film is fantastic. The cinematography is stellar, the sets are wonderful, the music is gorgeous, the performances are brilliant, and the writing and characters are just amazng. But, aside from how much of brilliant film it is technically, it connected with me on a human level. It has improved my life more than any other film. Despite how much it seems to be used in classrooms, it's still a criminally underappreciated piece of fiction. There really needs to be some way to bring more attention to it.

Dude this is so awesome!! Thank you so much. We are covering this in school but this film really struck me so deeply that I wanted to see more about it. This was a really interesting piece so amongst the many thank you :) . Also there's just something about the whole feel, from the beginning to the end, from the visuals to the music to the actual story...this was truly a masterpiece of a film

Very well done! This is absolutely one of my favorite films of all time and though I've seen it countless times, I didn't catch the connection to Vincent and Jerome and the two swimmers on Jerome's medal. How cleverly symbolic! Also what you stated about the flames turning the silver into gold.....wow! You totally did a wonderful job at highlighting the sheer beauty of this film, and how artfully well-done the symbolisms are. Thanks much for this upload!

There is so much symbolism in such a great film. The helix staircase Jerome climbs up - willpower not genes. Jermome Morrow aka Genome Tomorrow. Vincent Freeman - conquering Freeman. Eugene good gene Jerome’s middle name. The subtext on how we throw away those who can’t produce. The observation from poster below about silver medal is gold in flames is beautiful. Swimming ala olympics nude with Olympic medal where there was no knowledge of DNA it was a contest of human WILL. Irene Casinni - Cassini probe to Titan. Dr Lamarck (Also hero in that he’s helping Vincent at least for last half of film or at least from point he keeps wanting to talk about his Faithchild). Lamarckism- disproven theory but adhered to idea experience and memes could be passed on in dna- experience not just inheritance. The haunting score how in the heck did this film not got nominated and win a ton of awards? NASA scientists rate as best sci film of all time. The scene with Dr Lamar at end resetting dna reader and Vincent’s look of thanks is so awesome Xander is awesome.

I think this downplays the tragedy of Gerome's fate a bit too much. In my opinion, the point of Gerome is that he doesn't succeed. He gives up on life, just like Anton gives up in his game against Vincent. At first, Gerome is presented as a tragic character due to the fact that his disability robs him of his "potential". But later we learn that he became disabled in a suicide attempt; he'd already given up on life, due purely to the fact that he wasn't able to be the best. The thing keeping Gerome down is his mindset. He dismisses the idea of becoming an astronaut because he's "scared of heights". In spite of his genetics, he's a failure, and he's a failure by his own volition, not due to anything beyond his control. Ultimately this makes him a perfect foil to Vincent. While Vincent spends the movie overcoming the prejudice others have against him, choosing not to accept what his genes say he's going to be; Gerome relies on his genes to get him everywhere in life. He expects life to hand him success, without him working for it. And when that doesn't happen, he spirals. He starts out believing that Vincent attains success because Vincent is using his genes to impersonate him. But he eventually comes to realize that Vincent is successful because he truly is "superior" to Gerome in some intangible way. But he never realizes that the only thing superior about Vincent is his mindset. He kills himself because the events of the movie have cemented it in his mind that he's a failure; someone else could go much farther with his genes than he could. Essentially, Gerome is the classic child-protegy/gifted-kid who fails to live up to the "talent" everyone tells him he has. His character arc is important, because it transforms the movie from being simply a cookie cutter story about overcoming obstacles, to a commentary about how our society judges potential. We have this idea of a "natural talent" and other concepts, which essentially amount to excuses for why we don't pursue success ourselves. But the movie demonstrates that "talent" doesn't mean anything. It's only what you choose to do that matters

Yes, my favourite bittersweet story is that of the Mountain Man, a dhalit who carved a path through a mountain so that the journey to the hospital would not take so long and cost more lives, as it did his beloved wife. That's the kind of person I want to be like, and around. Here is more clarity: As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans:3:10,23 King James Version Everyone is a sinner, one sin is enough to send you to hell, however God loves us and provides a way to Heaven, through Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ paid the full price for your sin past, present and future. He offers the free gift of eternal life to anyone who puts their trust in him to save them, not in their own good deeds which can NEVER save them. I have a clear gospel presentation on my channel by a trustworthy pastor. Watch it, understand the gospel and believe it. Get saved today, it lasts for eternity. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1 John:5:13 King James Version

Dan T 3 years ago Anton is the "superior" brother because of his perfect genes. However, he is TOO perfect. He is efficient and effective, and therefore he saved energy for the swim back. Vincent, the "inferior" brother, gave it his all and saved nothing for the swim back. He devoted himself entirely to his dream. It is mankind's inferiority complex, our ability to wholly devote ourselves to an ideal despite our imperfections and flaws that makes us capable of transcending "perfect" genes. Beautiful and provocative movie no 1 year ago GATTACA G = Guanine A = Adanine T = Thymine C = Cytosine aka the four chemical bases of DNA.

This is such an underrated movie to me. I think it's also a duality about dreams and death: how they drive people sometimes to their deaths--Vincent achieves his dream of going into space but will likely die there, if he gets some kind of medical procedure for his heart he'll live a longer life but his dream will end, so he chooses the dream and early death--and latching on to Vincent's dream and making it happen was the only thing keeping Jerome alive. When the dream was achieved he had no reason to continue. Dreams can carry life and bring death at the same time.

The idea that genetic discrimination would make all other forms irrelevant is the only part of the movie that made me do a double take - especially since the in-valids occupy today's economic underclass. For the entire runtime, though, every character and aspect of this world felt unquestionably real. Gattaca is an absolute masterclass in getting the audience on your side.

This analysis is not accurate. Eugene takes his own life in order to share in Vincent's moment of triumph. He is literally reborn in the fire (like a rebirth of the phoenix). He is joining Vincent among the stars "they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home.". The silver medal he holds represents Eugene's failure. As he burns it turns gold symbolising he has finally won (because he is sharing in Vincent's moment of triumph). Dr Lamar always knew Vincent was a borrowed ladder. It's foreshadowed in his earlier question to Vincent about his son.

I had a theory which i doubt but thought would be sorta interesting. The theory was that the person Jerome lost to when he get the silver medal was an invalid. Thats why Jerome was so torn up about it, he was made to win and beat by someone with no advantages, a person who from an outside point of view had no chance against Jerome

i always thought a twist to this could be that Jerome became a slacker due to his injury. Allowed Vincent to believe the illicit dna swap partnership. letting Jerome go through the trials and tribulations of the rocket program. then on day of liftoff, Jerome stands and shows hes in fact not handicapped at all, he does away with Vincent, and he enters the rocket ship.

He might've just reused them (I don't wear contacts so idk if that would work, but desperate times call for desperate measures), or who knows, he could've really just brought a bunch of contacts with him on his journey lol And anyway, in the end of the movie Jerome left him a bunch of DNA stuff to use for when he gets back, but he said that he won't be needing it, which probably implies that he doesn't care what the world thinks of him anymore after he's accomplished his goal. So he could've also taken his glasses with him and if anyone wants to comment on that, they can, because surely they can't do anything if he's already made it to Titan, and maybe they'll accept him even if they find out Those are just theories tho, and this isn't like a documentary so I don't think the writer thought through every possibility, but that's a good question

I have 3 questions. How did Vincent figure out that the detective was his brother? Didn't the doctor see the urine bag he used for the tests? Did Vincent leave his brother to drown after looking at the sky?
@NicholasDobbie
@NicholasDobbie 8 лет назад
+QuantumPeter This is more of a plot question than a thematic analysis, but! Vincent knew as he could see beyond the wall of DNA, so he could see beyond the prejudice - his brother could not and didn't recognize him. I don't really know how the Dr would have, asl it was strapped to his thigh and was out of sight. No, he just looked up to sky and realized his dream of going up there, realized he could beat his brother again and that DNA didn't define him. I believe he would've dragged him back to shore - but it's not shown.

The way Vincent talks to the doctor at the end makes me think that Vincent always suspected that the doctor might have known. Think about his words: "There is only one person that has ever come close to finding out who I am." He was talking about the doctor, and considering that Vincent's weakness is his own body, it's impossible that the doctor didn't notice. But the doctor was actually the most humanitarian characters in the movies, we see him trying to do pleasant conversation with his patients even though he wasn't required to and we hardly see anyone else do it. It was unusual actually... Also the doctor's words "I have a son (...) he admires you (...) he's not all that they promised." He has a son and at one time, he believed in genetic perfection and what they promised. But even in a genetically perfect world there are still winners and losers (as proved by Jerome). This loss is probably taken really hard especially by the most genetically perfect of humans. So seeing someone like Vincent who shouldn't even physically be fit to even be in the program is like seeing a rookie boxer taken on Mike Tyson in the ring and actually standing up to him. He admires Vincent for fighting with his spirit for what his body can't/shouldn't give him. He sees in him someone who deserved to achieve his dream, not entitled to.

Jerome actually put himself in that wheelchair. Late in the film, Vincent learns that Jerome's paralysis is by his own hand; after coming in second place in a swim meet, Jerome threw himself in front of a car. Jerome maintains that he was designed to be the best, yet wasn't, and that is the source of his suffering.

Max Nyström I don’t get it, what would an SJW have to gain from watching Gattaca? I mean I cried like a lil bitch and listen to the soundtrack all the time, but that’s all the effect it had on me. And a new appreciation for Ethan Hawke if you catch my meaning. ;3

The doctor knew all along that Ethan's character was posing as a "Valid." Something about left handed guys don't hold it with their right... (or vice versa) And the fact that the doctor's son was " a fan" of his, implying that the doctor had told his son about Ethan's character and his accomplishments. So...letting him go at the end was nothing more than he had been doing all along. (Although, the doctor was never given a reason to blatantly let him go and tip his hand until the final scene.)

The doctor's son has a disability too which is why he was secretly rooting for Vincent.

I believe Vincent had three people at Gattaca covering for him. The doctor was one, the janitor was another as it is likely he recognized Vincent and is shown on two occasions covering for him. He is there to take the cup from Vincent, and he is at the crime scene "just doing his job" - but, of course, he is also covering for Vincent. The 3rd one who covers for him is the Director. The Director covers for Vincent because he sees the flawless nature of Vincent's work and preparation, he is likely not so political one way or the other; I suspect his reasons are more practical. But, when Vincent is discovered by one of the other Directors - his Director murders the man before he can spill Vincent's secret. When the investigation begins, the Director insures that it is Uma Thurman's character who helps the detective. This is likely an attempt to distract the detective and throw him off Vincent's scent.

That scene at the end explains a lot...remember in the beginning when the doctor complements Jerome aka Vincent on his big package....I kept wondering “there’s no way the doctor didn’t see the tube for the urine Vincent was using”...the doctor just let him keep using it

The Doctor let Vincent go because his son is also an invalid (and probably wants to go to space too), that's why his son is a fan of Vincent's work. There is a line where the Doctor says "my son's not all that they promised. But then again, who knows what he could do," which implies that his son is also an invalid.

do you think the doctor is Vincent's father?

@@geraldwright9841 I thought about that too... 🤔
@davidcharles7106
@davidcharles7106 4 года назад
@@geraldwright9841 No. Vincent's father is dead as his brother told him. Some theorize that the doctor is actually Jerome's (Eugene's) father in part because Jerome does tell Vincent he admires him when he is drunk one night and the doctor does say his son is an admirer of Vincent. Still, I think the line "not all that they promised" does imply an invalid - it is true that Eugene does describe himself that way, since he came in 2nd place. But, I doubt his father would view a silver medal as failure. So, I don't subscribe to that theory.

When the Doctor says in regard to his son "who knows what he could do" and that his son is not all that they promised... he is letting Vincent know that he knows Vincent's situation and if Vincent made it this far who knows what his son can do as well. :)
@joselitocollazo9214
@joselitocollazo9214 4 года назад
The humanity of the Doc would then never expose Vincent as the Doc can fully relate to Vincent's situation due to his son being similar...
