Thanks for the video. It’s interesting how differently fans of a band can rank their catalog. Below is my ranking (it will become apparent which era I’m partial to, lol). 15. The Astonishing (some great songs, but overblown and cheesy in spots) 14. Dream Theater (mostly meh but Illumination Theory is outstanding) 13. A Dramatic Turn of Events 12. Distance Over Time 11. A View from the Top of the World 10. When Dream & Day Unite (many great songs, only downside is production) 9. Falling into Infinity 8. Octavarium (by coincidence came in at #8) 7. Black Clouds & Silver Linings 6. Systematic Chaos 5. Train of Thought 4. Awake (remove Caught in a Web and Innocence Faded and this would be as perfect as I&W) 3. Images & Words 2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 1. Scenes from a Memory (life-changing album that got me into DT)
1. Images and Words (1992) 2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) 3. Distance Over Time (2019) 4. Metropolis 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) 5. Awake (1994) 6. A View from the Top of the World (2021) 7. Octavarium (2005) 8. A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011) 9. Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009) 10. Train of Thought (2003) 11. Systematic Chaos (2007) 12. The Astonishing (2016) 13. Dream Theater (2013) 14. Falling Into Infinity (1997) 15. When Dream and Day Unite (1989)
1 Scenes from a memory 2 Awake No; it never sleeps, no matter how many spins. This wasn't always this high on my rankings. How can I explain it? This album has got something special going on...Timeless. 3 Images and words This changed things 4 A Dramatic turn of events Full of "deepcuts" that some how aren´t regarded as epics as they should - Portnoy ain't on it so let's bash it: wrong! 5 When Dream and Day Reunite Alike Awake, this whole thing is one big epic ball I can't get enough of. 6 Black Clouds and Silver Linings Bring me more epics! Ignore the singles if you will. 7 Octavarium Weren't for two tracks, plus noticeable influences, this would be higher - the concept is great! The diversity is welcome but... 8 Train of Thought This is a banger! Absolutely love three tracks on here but again, noticeable influences diminish it, and it is lacking the soul of the band, I guess. It used to be a lot higher on my list! 9 Distance over time By the numbers yet great tracks can't be ignored. 10 Falling into infinity Oh Man, call it what you like but New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the sand and Trial of Tears would be the highlights of many band's careers. 11 Systematic chaos Ministry of Lost Souls 12 Six degrees of inner turbulence Disc one: a blend of noise effects with sweet wankery. I dig some transitions and that's it. Disc two: sounds like christmas prog to me - I know, I know, I'll give it another spin, later!) 13 Dream Theater I dig Rush's cover: The Looking Glass - : ) *I'm yet to listen properly to the other two missing links. And it might take quite some time for them to sink in - some people forget to give time especially this type of music requires - though some I am over-familiarized with remain pretty flat and dull - the material simply doesn't connect with me. .
Nice! Looking forward to this one. Never listened to too much of their stuff beyond the really well-known stuff, but I'm going to use this as a starting point to check out more. Thanks as always for the vids
Great ranking Tom! I've not listened to them still, but they're discography is massive. Least I know which ones to avoid, 2 and a quarter hour long album!!?? No thank you!! Though I will check out some of these albums at some point, when I have a year free to me! 😂😂🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks Josh! Yeah I don't think you'd like The Astonishing much haha. It was a challenge prepping for this video as there were a lot of albums to revisit, and a few I didn't really know very well (like Systematic Chaos, Falling into Infinity & Octavarium)
@@thegreenman4925 Welcome man. Haha yeah man, I don't think I can listen to 2 hours of slow music! Yeah I'm sure it was a challenge, that's a lot of hours listening there! You did a great job with this ranking man 😊🤘
I'll listen to your top three picks but Dream Theater, along with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, are three bands that I have never spent much time with.
I agree with your placement of images and words. Its a great album but there were a few better ones. I think I had it at 4 when I did mine and our top 3 were almost the same.
@@thegreenman4925 I will agree that it’s very long, very technical and probably the most experimental album they made alongside awake. Also, 40 min songs don’t do it for some 😂
