I feel ya...Scenes is one of my favorite records of all time. It has the most tame IIC+ tone ever, and its so warm and woody. I just got tickets 13 days ago to go see em in Syracuse NY on November 10th. I really dig the new record, its fresh and easy...but when I heard they are playing Scenes in its entirety, I jumped in head first. This will be the 14th time for me at a DT show, and was the most expensive concert yet at $185US for a pair of 8th or 9th row tix...slightly stage left OF COURSE, lol. Major props to these old timers, they just anounced yet another leg to this epic tour down in Chile and Brazil, a couple weeks after they announced this 2nd US leg. True vets of the road like very few others.
I'm pretty sure I didn't even play video games for 6 hours per day at my peak video game playing. Doing that AND partying... Wow. No school homework presumably at least.
Mike P and John M lived together in Long Beach in the late 80's. Mike would throw crazy parties. Myung would stay in his room amp cranked and practice for hours.
@George Kam They actually got M. Shadows' birthplace wrong. He wasn't born in Huntington Beach, CA. He was born in Fountain Valley, CA, which is basically next to Huntington Beach.
EXACT-AMUNDO! It's INSANELY distracting to me. WTF!! (Was he wearing big headphones for an hour?? I've NEVER seen hair-shaped-like-an-ear like that before! DRIVES ME NUTS!)
And everyone just standing around watching him, not because they know who he is but because he has all the weights in the gym on the bar, preventing them from working out.
His story at the begging is word for word my experience with the guitar. Got one at 8, went to lessons, played songs no one wanted to learn, put the guitar down until I was 13 and learned and practiced what I wanted to for about 6 hours a day lol
Petrucci is such a humble human being. Met him at the aftershow in Atlanta, GA as well as Rudess, Mangini, and LaBrie. All very nice gentleman and very humble.
Yep, met him once and really is a very friendly and humble guy. Met Portnoy twice and he's the same. My friend met Rudess at the weed store before the show earlier this year (in Denver) and he said Rudess was super chill. I wonder why...
2 things- 1) John is such a chill, laid back interview. Very gracious and forthcoming. I love it. Thank you for your excellent attitude, sir. 2) Kevin Moore era dream theater was my absolute favorite version of the band, and Chroma Key/OSI has grown to become one of my favorite acts. But to hear John’s side of Kevin’s departure was heartbreaking. Come on Kevin. You don’t have to be in the band, but give your old buddy a call and reconnect. Enough time has passed. You can see he still misses you and thinks about you.
James LaBrie has confirmed that Kevin and him are keeping in touch via text in 2019. So I'd like to know if the band has heard his new patreon demos, or any of his original music at all!
The Chicken Nugget of Fate I remember the exact post where it was (Kevin’s Facebook, where he linked to one of his demos - think it was “Strong” - on Patreon in 2017), but the comment has disappeared. anyway, it didn’t say anything too juicy, just something like “can’t wait to check these out Kev, miss you old friend”. so you can choose whether or not to believe me!
5:54 If you reverse something twice, you're back where you started, except that now the attack of the notes is at the end of the notes instead of at the beginning, which is definitely what's going on in that solo.
A scene in Lynch's "Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me" was filmed backwards, but the actors spoke their lines backwards phonetically so that you can understand what they are saying even though the film is reversed.
I was shocked that he didn’t remember this. It’s definitely what happened. It’s the same thing George Harrison did in I’m Only Sleeping. I know Portnoy is a big Beatles fan, so I’ll bet it was his idea and Petrucci just forgot. To be fair, it was nearly 20 years ago.
Recently started playing guitar and I can’t believe it took me until now to start listening to Dream Theater; gladI found it nonetheless. Truly a masterpiece through and through.
Dude, I think "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?" is one of the best ideas I've seen in years... not to mention how good you are as an interviewer, the idea is AWESOME!
Siiigh...the same old questions about the meaning of “The Count of Tuscany” and “Nightmare to Remember”...I want to know what the hell “Under a Glass Moon” is about!!
What a nice person...I never knew, but I have been surely impressed and inspired by his Guitar playing for god knows what is it, over 30 years? Enjoyed that a lot!
I was dying for the follow up question on why Kevin left. I mean I know you can read it somewhere, but he’s literally in front of you... So much wasted opportunities in this interview :(
Interesting DT story -- a cassette copy of DT's "Awake" album was one of the last things I bought at my local Jamesway department store before they closed up shop in 1994. So many fond memories of cassette albums and singles I bought at that store in the 80's and 90's!
One day after this video released, wikipedia is already corrected, at least on the 6 hours a day thing which is the only thing I checked on. Well done, internet.
I look up to Petrucci not only because of his skills , but his personality . the humility of this dude is unbelievable , and side note . Holy shit hes been friends with Myung for like forever .
John Petrucci was such an inspiration when I played guitar. Scenes From A Memory is still my all-time pound-for-pound favorite album ever. And his solo album, Suspended Animation, is a masterpiece from beginning to end. I stop following him when I stopped playing and changed to something else, and I can't say I like what he has become (stylistically), but the man is a legend.
Im happy John came down to earth a little bit since Distance Over Time dropped. Hopefully the robot years are over. But deep down i'm still hoping that Mike will return to the band one day...
