the easy dudes like Angus Young are like the easy going dads who don't mind if you suck or not, as long as you're having fun. John Petrucci is like the dad who expects nothing but S tier results from you.
I've been a Progressive Rock/Metal fan for decades. These guys are unbelievable. I've watched everything from King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Rush, and many others. Dream Theater is the most fun and impressive to watch and listen to. Just look at Myong mirror Pettruci chord by chord and the speed of both of them. Flawless playing through the entire concert. They are truly the greatest ever.
Technically impressive, but after a while it gets boring run after run and eventually becomes uninspiring to the point where there is no distinction or creativity of musicality. I have seen Dream Theater many times and always the same boredom kicks in after a while, I love technicality, but I love musicality as well. Yes, ELP and King Crimson posess both, Dream Theater never mastered the musicality department like the others have. And to me I gig them harshly on that and why to me they were never a complete perfect band. Now in terms of their technical playing, they are a perfect band, but going back to what I was saying about that fine level balance, DT is not the perfect complete Progressive band.
@mustafa kp. I really like Porcupine Tree especially when they are live. Actually they are the only band I have collected live albums from. I like their studio material but... Their acoustics and atmospheric display are far superior on their live shows.
@@jskypercussion I couldn't disagree more. They do go off on musical tangents and for the cynical they label it self indulgence, but they have plenty of compositions that are just 'songs' if you will. I have never considered them boring. Boring to me it's today's metal where nearly every band sounds like the flavor of the day. All those progressive bands you mention...have their signature sound and style. Dream Theater managed to find their signature sound and style. I think they have a perfect mix of the technical virtuosity and the heart and soul of songs where they leave the shredding and riffing on the shelf. Some just refuse to acknowledge it. They only hear the notes open your heart along with your mind.
These guys don't have one single second to fuck around. Total focus required. Total immersion. It's almost exhausting to watch. Their brains should be studied. Damn. I'm gonna listen to some simple blues numbers after this!

I just recently got into Dream Theater and I just finished watching this performance. Those 6 minutes went by so quick. I was so intrigued by how precise and technical these guys are live. Some of the greatest musicians alive today.
Holy crap!! I’m a life long musician since 2nd grade (violin 12 yrs and drummer since 7th -present) and I’m blown away with the complexity and mind blowing stuff these guys play!! I’m 62 btw. These guys are amazing!
I just absolutely fucking love when the camera work is this good for a musical performance. Just hitting all the right musicians at all the right times. I feel like the video crew clearly plays instruments themselves
@@joeyhardin5903 🤣 Watch him in the multi display video of The Dance of Instrumentals: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mffDkC7vfp8.html
Saw these guys in concert back in 2000. I'm not sure I've ever seen more pure raw talent together on a stage, and I saw Yes on the Union tour. There are chops, then there's Dream Theater. As a classically-trained musician with decades of playing in orchestras and pits under my belt, I can tell you that the great majority of the folks in the orchestra were having a great time too!
@@dashoverboard. at some point they start to look like a harp and then it's more like playing a surf board instead of a bass. Then you think man it would be really convenient to be able to play an F and still keep my thumb behind the neck.
Erkut Soyer Everyone bashes Mangini because hes is'nt smiling and spitting garbage all over his drums like the old facebook whiner. Yet Myung hasn't shown personality since 1982.
Actually labries vocals on this particular dvd kicked ass.. i have to say, seeing them 3 times in atlanta, james can be less than perfect for sure . But he nailed finally free on breaking the fourth wall
Our conductor (Eren) had the hardest job. Not only was he in charge of rehearsing us, but he TRANSCRIBED EVERY NOTE the band played. How he did it, I don’t know. He’s a magician.
@@astromer09 Wait you played on this song? I don't know how no one asked but how it was like to play with them compared with playing regular classical music? I would really like to know it. Also, it's not a little offensive to be in that pit? As someone who just watched it online but doesn't understand about music engineering or music at all it doesn't seem a good place to put non electrified instruments. : D
Leliel 12th The best Way I can describe it is to listen to your phone speaker, and then put your phone in an empty cup - the pit helps echo out the sound without needing even more speakers
Once I went to see Maiden again live and It turned out that DT was one of the supporters in that concert. The order was: Motörhead Slayer DT And then Maiden It was by the time SFAM came out. There I saw DT the first time live and I will never forget this experience. I was standing there jaw dropped to the floor...and after the DT set I got me a beer with a big smile on my face. Big fan since that day!
Hard to believe that the boundaries of music can pushed this far. Utterly amazing stuff. Apparently, when the concert was over 35 members of the symphony applied for Worker's Compensation.
Actually, this - and much more complex - is standard for any pro classical musician. This is why DT, Rush and King Crimson are actually the exceptions in rock.
i feel they don't get enough credit for their music as actual music. their music (especially images and words and metropolis pt 2) has been my go to music through some rough times.
@@herculesbrofister265 that's because their music is just plain uninteresting 90% of the time. being complex just for the sake of being complex is pointless. there are few exceptions on albums like scenes from a memory, but they're very sparse.
You are wrong, it went like this: "John, remember that one time we missed a note?" "..." EXTRA: "John, remember that one time we did that awesome solo?" "Yes, I did a bass solo in a bass solo"
The orchestra is some of the most important things in a DT song, maybe in this mix the sound enginner make the orchestra is almost non existent, but just imagine that if you have went to that show and there was no orchestra the song will feel empty and dry (Sorry for bad english)
they included it to make them seem like Baroque multi instrumental mavens. Looks very intelelctual, but useless. they could all be hitting bum notes and it would make no difference.
Petrucci, one of the best guitarists in the world, looks like he's having to concentrate hard. Mangini, likewise. But Rudess and Myung always make everything seem like a walk in the park.
