So if I'm correct, a piri was used to send SOS messages during wartime, hence the military-esque outfits and the wartime chant-like chorus of "oh oh oh" in the song. The translation is a bit wonky, but basically they're singing about the anxiety and fear of being alone that consumes our current society, and how people will do anything to combat loneliness. The members are using the piri to send an SOS to each other so they won't be alone (hence the "emergency emergency" post-chorus). Edit: it's actually a very uplifting message when you think about it. Basically Dreamcatcher is saying "when you lose your way, blow the piri and I will find you". And this entire song is just a call to arms. Epic 😍
I think that all InSomnias were shocked at Gahyeon's rap! She's had a small bit in Fly High and in Scars. But this is her first substantial rap section. I have the feeling that she's maybe taken over from Sua as the Lead Rapper of Dreamcatcher. Because it feels like Sua has transitioned more towards the vocal line as she hasn't rapped for quite a while now, whilst her vocal parts have been increasing.
@@purpleenthusiast2774 Itzy dont participate on the show so voting on Starpass will definitely helping DC! Hwasa and some popular artist dont participate too!
I think it's my favorite title track so far. It's so good. I’ve been working on my own pet theory as to how Piri is connected. The white room is representative of the alternate dimension the Spider Curse Yoohyeon’s soul got left in in You and I (which is WHITE AND SNOWY). Jiu finds the book from Good Night in What and uses it to send the entire group in to save Yoohyeon. They are then confronted with their worst fears. Yoohyeon’s body eventually finds its soul (the shot of Yoohyeon looking up represents this), then she reaches out and finds all her friends as they all hold hands at the end. The hands that abduct most of our members throughout the MV is Yoohyeon. Whether the girls escape the dimension is...up to interpretation but the white room suddenly plunging into darkness isn’t a good sign. The important part is that they’re together at last. The Piri was Jiu’s way of everyone finding each other in case someone got lost in the nightmare. The individual nightmares are: Siyeon - Alone in the dark Handong - time passing you by Gahyeon - the voices in your head Jiu - the guilt that her obsession in saving Yoohyeon is an excuse in redeeming herself for failing to save YH in You and I Sua - EVIL FUCKING DOLLS Dami - hers is a little hard to pinpoint but it feels like the fear of not finding what you need to find Yoohyeon is the only one without an individual nightmare because this dimension IS her nightmare. Finding the Shofar at the beginning was a revelation, but it’s interrupted by our girls’ Piri. She hears it and sets out to find everyone. In the end, Yoohyeon saves everyone who came in to save her.
I saw a video explained that Yoohyeon trapped in nightmare, she was lonely and then she blew the piri to summon/pull the rest of DC back to nightmare with her (at the end of Piri MV everyone held hands together)
@@scarseokxxx3717 check Fly High MV. There is a lady that spread nightmare in the night. She covered her face with cloth. And in Piri jiu open the cloth, and the girl covered with a cloth is jiu. Also in fly high we can see there is 2 jiu. The first jiu is normal jiu, and the other is jiu that play a piano. Sorry for my bad english
So piri 피리 does specifically refer to the traditional Korean instrument that Sean mentions, but also it's what a pipe-style of wind instrument is generally called. For example, the pied piper of Hamelin plays a 피리, kids in Korea learn to play the recorder which is referred to as 피리 etc. And that big honk that the song starts off with is a war horn of some sort apparently? Something like that. The group thought it sounded like an elephant haha
I just remembered this old anime which was popular in Korea in the 80's, about an orphan frog who goes through many hardships... and he plays the "piri" (the generic kind) when he feels sad, to help him get through it - okay it sounds pretty weird but I think I'm not making that up? lol Anyway here's the theme song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vlzkznQ4B6U.html and at about the one minute mark, you get the lyric "play the piri" and then the pillilli thing (onomatopoeic sound of a piri). I don't know if the songwriter had this in mind at all (like I said, it's pretty old) but it just popped into my head
@@SWCcomposer Oh hi, didn't realize you were the Sean from the video :D I was actually kind of surprised when you mentioned the traditional Korean "piri" because I wasn't thinking of that instrument at all when I heard this song lol I look forward to seeing you in future reaction videos!
@@ouijaboar Thanks! Yeah, my knowledge of Korean music is weirdly patchy because it's like 1) Korean composers (진은숙 and 윤이상 specifically) who are important in the west with a lot of music for Western instruments, 2) Elements of Korean traditional music that I've read about in relation to 윤이상의 music, and 3) KPop. So the 피리 fell into category 2, and I had no idea of its common usage.
yeah i heard that The Piri was to break nightmares or wake people or something and so in this MV, the member are trying to escape the nightmare I assume by blowing the Piri (whatever represents the Piri), the Nightmare is like a maze but in the end they failed and continue to live and repeat that nightmare. for anyone making theories I'd have to point out your theories have to end with them failing to escape the nightmare as that's what happened.
I think so Too! But this time they end up being together despite being stuck inside of it so at least their call for a companion in their loneliness works
I assumed that they escaped since the room they ended in is a lot brighter and less nightmarish than when they started out in and everyone who kept getting pulled is yoohyeon helping them to escape
Suprisingly, Dami Shorthair really suits her so well. She look like an actress to me And I'm sure some of us were wrecked by Gahyeon rap. InSomnia's didn't expected that coming actually, pretty much all of us shocked too Thanks guys for the reaction😀
Why is it surprising? Of course she looks good with short hair. In fact, I prefer her shorter hair. In my opinion, it suits her much better than the hair she had in Good Night.
I am so GRATEFUL that you're stanning Dreamcatcher hard on this channel. They are a truly unique group that needs more exposure overseas! Just to note on "piri", although technically it is the name of the double-reed instrument, in Korea the word is used to refer to all wooden flute/recorder type instruments. In fact, a western "flute" used to be known as "양피리", literally translated as "Western Piri". So, although the traditional piri is played straight, it is not wrong or strange for the MV to depict playing one sideways like one would play a flute. Hope this clarifies that part of the music video!
One more DC trivia! Jiyu used to work at a Korean BBQ place. She was so pretty that she used to get tips and have regulars who came to the restaurant just to see her (Korea does not have a tipping system and it's extremely rare to give tips).
umu freaking out over dami is a big mood edit: this is probably my favorite out of all their title track so far. gonna see them live next month, looking forward to jam irl.
Also fan theory: After going through lyrics translated-into-English. A couple of things stood out: - Verse 1 mentions that "the reality won't be different (even after "opening eyes" and "waking up from the dream") - Dami's rap part might be saracstic. "Uh, well, time will fix it, right?" - Also Dami rapping "I've had a gun for a while". Why just "a while"? What pushed her to start having it? - And the (pre-)chorus basically going for an "endless downward spiral" theme. Then I started looking for things to match my theory (full disclaimer of confirmation bias): Why 2 distinct settings, a white, almost blank room, and a dark, dimly-lit one with all the clocks and phones and dolls? PD (another RU-vidr) mentioned that the white setting could be referring to an asylum feel, which enforces that the settings implied different states of mind (white room being awake but empty, dark room being asleep and in nightmares). So overall this song feels like despair. Like you'll get into nightmares when you sleep, but when you wake up you still feel no hope, and you're just waiting for a saviour, one that you know nothing of except that they'll bring a piri.
Piri comes in 4 types in Korea and they all vary in sounds, style, size, and the techniques for playing them. Not sure which one they are referencing though.
this is the end of the nightmare concept you think it is time that the dreamcatcher shows or shows us all his vocal vesartility and begin to deal with the concepts already known without leaving that rock style remember that it is the end of the concept of nightmares but not of his musical style
The foghorn, the guitar backing the vocals in the chorus, everything about the outfits, the music video editing really echoing their nightmare concept, the outstanding balance and switching between light/heavy instrumentals...this era is perfection
YESSS!!! I have been really looking forward to your reaction. I'm really liking this song and I love some of the great insight that you provide here. :D
The beginning sound when the song sound like when a warrior signalling the engaged of war. In some places, its Taboo to play flute at night cause it will "invited" Snake come into house. And how can i relate about this that These girls use PIRI to escapes but instead they get into trouble. 1) Yoohyeon running away after touching that SHOFAR 2) Siyeon lost in the Maze 3) Handong seems depressed 4) Gahyeon were kidnapped 5) JiU saw her Doppleanger just like in Fly High 6) SuA run into her Nightmare ( Paralyzed ) 7) Somebody Dragged dami into nowhere At the end, they manage to stay together and you can see the background scenery slowly turn into black, means they aren't done yet and still it begin their new fight.. The End Of Nighmare doesn't look like the end at all, not with that kind of ending.. seems might be a continuation after this
So glad you both liked it! I love DC (almost as much as Gfriend) and this is another wonderful, powerful bop!!!! :) Let's get our first win with Piri! :D And I love Dami's new hairstyle! I think she looks like a kdrama actress now! :) :)
Ahhh your reactions are priceless. Ma bias Gahyeon shocking every inSomnias with her rap is just soo gooddd and that intro. After multiple listens ive gotta say this one is hella catchy and just might be my fav out of all their title tracks. Now i'm curious to see ur reactions to the b sides....theyre hella good especially diamond😍 Btw dayum somnias y'all rlly are awesome at making theories based on their mvs...so proud to be one 😘
I don't think the narrative of the song lyrics in their title tracks typically actually coincide at all with the "Nightmare" storyline on display within their music videos. I think they said this song is about playing the piri and waiting for their love to return to them or something like that, but the video is still about them trying to escape the nightmares that they've been in since the events of Fly High. For me, you could always tell there was a story in their videos, but it always seemed more abstract than concrete. I could never be able to piece a beginning, middle and end to the videos. Jiu mentioned in their showcase interview for Piri that the Nightmare storyline ultimately has a sad ending so I'm assuming that means they never escaped. :(
first of listening to this song, I didn't know the meaning at all. but there was something that made me thinking about my past and somehow it made me cry. this song is just beautiful.
Your reactions always give me so much joy, Umu. Especially because the whole time I listen to a group like Dreamcatcher, I'm like *shocked Pikachu meme* Keep being awesome!
OMG, FINALLYYY!!! YES!!! YOU REACTED TO IT! I HAVE AWAITED THIS REACTION! :D So glad that you're both InSomnias! Hell yeeeessss!!! Also, yes, Yoohyeon's vibrato is on POINT! She's my bias. But they're all bias wreckers! lol
New guy mentioned that Piri give us some time to breath during songs compared to You and I and What. The difference is the writers/producers, the duo called LEEZ/Ollounder. They did the first singles and almost all of the other DC tracks. They know how to work with dynamic range and they provide DC with excellent material that let the girls shine.
Based on DREAMCATCHER's interview between 'Haegun-sudal'(Korean RU-vidr) They all entered the Nightmare because of Yoohyeon. In 'YOU AND I' MV Yoohyeon just captured in Nightmare. In this MV Yoohyeon just realised the way to bring all members into nightmare. 'PIRI' is the totem that bring all members into the Nightmare and also paradoxically SOS sign to their member.
I had no idea before this Reaction Video that a Piri is a musical instrument. I thought, by context, it was the Korean equivalent of a siren sound effect, since it comes after they sing "Emergency". Like IU's song "Bbibbi", a whistle sound effect; EXID's "DDD", the sound of shivering in the cold; or fromis_9's "DKDK", the sound of a passionate heart. I'm still relatively new to Kpop (less than a year) and trying to learn as much cultural nuance in understanding song construction and naming conventions.
First I heard them I liked them immediately. Vocals/rap, choreo/dance, concept/look It's like nutella, banana, crepes.. they all good separately, but together...
So according to somewhere online I read. Dreamcatchers songs are this whole story about this nightmare realm where Fly High shows how the members get trapped in the nightmare realm and then Chase Me shows them as ghosts fucking with the ghost hunter and then in Good Night they trap him in the nightmare realm and escape but in You and I and What Yoohyeon is still trapped in the nightmare realm until Piri where now everyone is in the nightmare realm but they are all together now.
I played this video in my room, then for the.. second time in front of my friend, the third time my friend said... "hey, i like this music, who is this group?" ,so, me = 😳👍🏻👍🏻, done inroduced
i think the whistle pattern in the beginning is a sample bc ive heard a different song with the same whistle pattern and i truly love that song! but they incorporated it really well here too
Heres to hoping they eventually react to the Special Clip of Nothing Holding me back. Would love to see her react to the massive amount of lines that Handong gets.
Actually 'piri' is the korean word for 'flute', which includes any kind of flute, so it still has sense they blow it sideways. The kind of flute can be specified with another syllable at the beginning of the word.
My theory for why they "blow" the piri to the side like a western flute is that it's more visually distinct than putting their hands in front of their bodies.
Piri has a ton of different meanings! Just had to say that. Also theory, when Dami appears, part of her rap, "I've had a gun for awhile.". I think we now know who the true murderer of the nightmare is.
I need you guys to react to Jung Jae Il (the pianist who work with Park Hyo Shin "Wildflower", "Sound of Winter") - "Dearest". He and Park Hyo Shin starred in JTBC variety show "Your Song" and this song is included in the 4th episode. It's an instrumental song, and I don't know if it many people will listen to it, but I CRIED the first time I hear it. I hope you and the crews can somehow cover it, too. But all I really hope is one more person to listen to it. I hope you guys like it. Have a good day! 💙
I'm definitely not an expert, but it seems like there is more than one kind of Piri (3 main ones with different sounds) and the oboe-like one is the largest of them. So the softer sound could be one of the smaller Piri variants. Also while I think the interpretation that it is a warning sound or call to arms is probably the best fit. A side note that could go back to the supernatural elements in their stories, is that the Piri is also one of the instruments often used by Shamans during rituals in Korea.
this reminds me so much of Visual Key!!! not their outfits, (not enough accessories) but the music. overall this was very jpop/jrock, I don't often hear kpop using this rock sound. interesting.
Piri is actually a Korean flute and the reason why the title album is called End of the Nightmare is because in Korean myth, the piri shows up during the end of nightmares (credits to that person from DreamCatcher amino for this)
