Kayla O. No Fantasia won that season. Oddly enough, Fantasia and Jennifer competed again for the role of Effie. Fantasia almost got the role but the director thought Jennifer’s performance was more authentic and believable

I just noticed some serious character development with Effie. Her singing this is symbolic of how her dream was stolen from her. It was her character reclaiming what she lost. Also notice how the first time they performed this, Beyoncé sang lead and all the good parts while Effie and Laurel sang in unison in order to be as invisible as possible. But in this, they do HARMONY. Representing the end of the conflict for everyone. And everyone had as chance to do their little runs and rifts at the end. THIS right here is a story y'all. Such a plot. That's why Dreamgirls will remain my favorite musical.
I also loved her as Tiana in The Princess amd the Frog. Now THAT is a Disney film that needs to be expanded upon and adapted into a Broadway show!!! ^_^
I absolutely love how Deena, Lorell & Michelle all wore the same outfit but Effie could finally stand out in a sheer gold outfit so she won’t be just the background singer and be overlooked.
What always makes me cry in this scene is Magic's perspective. Seeing my mum up on stage looking so happy and glamorous, finally getting the credit and attention her talent deserves.
Those notes at the end gives me chills. You really don't hear music being sung like that in R&B, you have to go into Gospel and get that taste of real singing.

you know you start to tear up when bey says "you know there aren't 3 dreams, there are 4" and the camera pans back to reveal effie entering the stage... you've officially lost it and broke down into a sobbing mess of happy tears
Over a decade later and I’m just now realizing Effie had the most passion in this song, because of what she had gone through. Not only that, but she had someone that she had shared true love with- her daughter. The song was always meant for her. It’s a testimony of survival. To find your self beyond the glamour of superficial appraise . Effie fulfilled the songs tue purpose and intent. To influence the life of someone who sees you as a dream. Her daughter viewed her as something unreal, unmatched. The other three group members having way more notoriety than her mother, but Effie being the main focal point. She’s truly famous in her daughter eyes. Wtf *drunk crying*
They completely SLAYED this song!! Bey, J Hud, Anika, & Sharon blend together so well! It's sounds as if they really had been singing together for years. Amazing! And is that Anika hitting that really high note from 1:29-1:53?
That lil girl acting was top notch! To express that much emotion in ALL of her scenes , was the cherry on top of Effie story arc! Anyone with a heart felt some type of emotional response whenever she was on the screen.
Jennifer Hudson gave me LIFE during this performance................... UGHHHH!!! I freaking love this woman! You KNOW you talented when you outshine Beyoncé in a movie!!!

I love watching this end scene. My favorite part is hearing Anika Noni Rose with the magnificent riff at 1:33 She has such a gorgeous voice. She kills ALL those high soprano notes!
To me the ending signifies what Curtis realized he should have had. Do y'all hear the crowd coming up and cheering with Effie as the lead? Imagine if he would have kept her as the lead in the first place and never put Deena. They would have still sounded good and to me that final look is him seeing the girl is his daughter and what the hell he missed. I love this movie so much the play is coming to my city and I'm definitely going to see it.
This is still the most beautiful finale I've ever seen. Between the music, the lighting change, and the glitter, I don't think anything will ever beat this one lol
All four of these ladies can sing.....the harmonies are so on point that it's crazy! If they had a group, everyone would have to drop out of the music industry...lol
Years later and this scene still holds up. They all sounded amazing. The 4 part harmony at 2:00 is my favorite. Anika, Sharon, Beyonce,& Jennifer had an amazing blend. I wish they did more music together...

Jennifer Hudson is a Dreamgirl she went from auditioning for American Idol ending in 7th place to a movie star with an academy award. for the people who made this movie thanks for choosing Jennifer as the unforgettable Effie White. Beyoncé is absolutely an amazing singer I'm not comparing but if I had to choose who was the Star of this movie it was absolutely Jennifer Hudson. Her voice, her acting and her power made this movie unbelievable and one of my top 5. I believe this movie wouldn't have nearly been this successful without Jennifer. And it was her Debut Movie, Amazing Job Jennifer!
Though Curtis would NEVER admit it out loud that could've been the moment were he realized he had been a 1st class asshole to Effie with little regard to what could have been going on with her all those years ago.....
Can we take a moment to appreciate Anika Noni Rose's soprano when they sing "We''ll be THERE" WOw, she really goes THERE!! She riches THERE! 01:37 However, you need to have a good ear to decipher voices when groups are singing harmonies (nothing special)

When I tell you this song gets me EVERYTIME!!!! Everyone did their thing, but my standouts were Jennifer and that run at 1:24 and Anika with that soprano at 1:28!!!!
It took everything in me not to break down sobbing because I'm having company in like 5 minutes but goddamn this movie deserves a million rewatches. Hudson will never NOT blow me away.
Love Dreamgirls!! This ending is one of the best endings ever! That look on his face, no amount of money can capture that! Awesome, just and excellent movie! Everyone was was great and should had one an Oscar!!
Not a great analogy. Kelly didn't have it as bad as Effie. While Beyonce; flew in a private gold jet to Jamaica, she did pay for a coach ticket on Virgin Airlines for Kelly, and Kelly was allowed to stay in the guest house. Michelle on the other hand had to take a kayak to Jamaica and had to check out of the hostel by 10am the next morning.
I love this movie and I love all of the actors, but on a personal note, I think Jennifer Hudson stole every scene with perfection (not to say that Anika Noni Rose and Beyonce didn't do well though because they were excellent as well).

This scene/song always makes me cry everytime. Vocalists have to execute the song they are singing vocally and present the song in equal measure. Acting out the song in this case for a film opppose, to when entertaining live. Acting out the song is and has to be even more epic cause your performing it for a live audience and the impression you leave on them is countless. Your vocals and performance are equal. Oppose to recording in a studio all there is you, music and the mic. I'm saying for these Artists/Actresses they were on the one delivering this. Beyonce, Jennifer, and Anika each have a different vocal technique but they clearly were the right choices to fill these roles cause their music group had a little bit of everything. Which is what the best stuff is made out of. Please don't compare and contrast them cause they all had the right stuff. When they combined their individual powers of passion, talent, love and gifts of music with eachother they were phenomenal beyond words and sight. Where all your left with is the Standing O and Epic impression left on your soul and thought in your mind of why don't they make music like this anymore...They all kicked ass. Truly inspiring, amazing, beautiful, and EPIC=ARTISTS!!!
I am a complete sucka when it comes 2 outright singing in harmony..Wow..These ladies tore it up..The whole scene is so heartbreaking but yet joyous..The passion in this song is unexplainable..Can't help but 2 allow the tears 2 flow..This song is moving
That little girl loves and so proud of her mother after all she has been through. Doesn't even know her dad is standing right their putting the pieces together that the little girl is his daughter after the evil low down things he done.
it could be that magic(effies daughter) is growing up and how curtis has no money coz the dreams left him and now he's trying to get them back.And effie could find a new man to take care of her and magic curtis could get jelous. i dont they're just ideas. i wish i could contact the writer of dreamgirls somehow. i might look into that actually. if that could actually happen i mean like incorpirate the dreamgirls fans ideas the film would be 10 times better.
