My dad bought me this record in 1960 for my 10th birthday. Played it to death on my sister Dansette over and over and over. Wonderful record. Loved the key changes, Johnnies change of tone and those wonderful strings. Brilliant. The passage of time has not dulled this song.. It brings back so many memories of where we were and what we were doing.. What's that.. I feel a tear welling up...
His son Rocky Burnette was spot on covering this song when he had his health and before his 60s, he's now 70. His cousin, Billy Burnett from Fleetwood Mac, also 70 has been covering Johnny and Rocky songs on the European concert trail. Another big hit for Johnny was "You're 16".
I was around and buying music when this was first released. (Oh dear.) Since then I've listened to this many times over the years and have come to realise what great backing arrangement it has. Try concentrating on the backing not just the vocal. They got it just right. Staffordshire, U.K. Stay Safe.

Jayan Kallur Jayan, I also was looking for this song and found it this year. Our dream came true! What a dreamy melody and lyrics with twirling strings and beat!
Grew up with this music, still love it. Takes me back to when we young and looking ahead to the future, not know where it would lead us. Just a great time. Thanks for posting. JN
Man I want to go back to 1960 when this was released. Mostly because I had a pompadour that looked pretty much like his. Now everything I have on top is gone and I only have Bozo Puffs on the side of my head. And my hair didn't even have the dignity to fall out symmetrically so it really looks stupid, because the Bozo Puffs are asymmetrical. People complaining about having a bad hair day, I've had a bad hair LIFE since the'70s.
PRODUCED BY THE GREAT AND BRILLIANT SNUFF GARRETT!! RECORDED AND RELEASED ON MAY 30TH 1960! PERSONEL ON THE RECORDING TRACK ARE HOWARD ROBERTS AND VINCENT TERRI ON GUITARS, AND THE CRICKETS JERRY ALLISON ON THE DRUMS!! WITH THE JOHNNY MANN SINGERS AND SID SHARP STRINGS!
I credit Snuffy Garrett with destroying rock and roll with his cheap sounding strings, although he did a good job on this one. Everyone started using strings around this time, even on Fats Domino and Duane Eddy records. It changed rock and roll to "Top Forty" music, which isn't/wasn't rock and roll. It got so slick and polished that the Beatles came over and made the music exciting again. Dick Clark loved this wholesome sounding, sweater boy, music, and of course he got a lot in payola to play it on his show. All the companies did the violin thing in order to try to get on Bandstand. Awful awful stuff.
@@StagPreston Aww, gee - I love the strings in these songs, and I don't think they are "cheap sounding. There's always a place for violins somewhere, and their especially poignant sound add to the emotional impact. I don' t think any form of rock and roll is or even should be "pure." Just my opinion, naturally.
The mono mix that was the radio hit is superior to the Stereo mix, which has Johnny's voice way above the orchestra, and quite dry. The mono mix has a gorgeous full echo on his voice, and he's located better in the overall mix that virtually explodes. Great song.
@StagPreston: I completely agree, though I always like hearing a stereo mix just in case it turns out better than the original AM radio mix. 'South Street' by The Orlons is another example. The mono has punch; the stereo destroys it.
Cool comment. The Great Jerry Allison on drums..the best rock and roll drummer ever.. A 20 year old guy became drummer session for Liberty, impressing even Earl Palmer.. He backed Cochran , Burnette, Knox, Vee, Ventures, Carson, Lee Dresser...The Everlys... and before that for a legion in Clovis, the greates being his pal Holly. Innovativa, fast, smooth, hard, ultra elegant, a machine at timming..his technique ispired a million, and settled the bases for what was rock'n'roll drums. He pionered paraddidles, playing on kness, cardboard boxes, cymbals, glass of wine.. There never was a drummer like him. J.I. is king

He had a head impact with the hull of the other much larger boat (a cabin cruiser)that hit them. There were witnesses with him that were rescued. Again, as is so often, no lifejacket. Being born and raised in Memphis, and working the Mississippi river throughout his young life with his older brother Dorsey Burnette I'd bet he could swim.
@@philmetcalf9171 Also, the cruiser boat struck Johnny's boat in the dark as Johnny's boat had no light to warn other boats of his appearance in the lake.
@@robertorick6383 yes, to be out after sundown with no lights was deadly for him. If he headed for Dock just 15min sooner they'd have probably made it.
