The internet will be a much poorer place without Bernadette if she does ever decide to disappear. Before stumbling across her channel I had no interest in historical dress, but her skill, ardour and warmth and her beautifully crafted videos draw me in every time. This was a marvellous interview.

She's not a historian, heck, she's got a video on making a pirate shirtl, one making a sherlock holmes cape, on making edwardian walking dresses out of modern materials, on making witchy dresses. She doesn't hide herself at all. What could you have thought that made you this angry about a youtuber, just doing her own stuff, specifically about Banner. She's as open as can be. She says, even, that she'll make a change .. for reasons. How can you believe you have been lied too? I'm aghast at your comments! And so, very, surprised

@@makaelaischillin everyone is a character online. People put what they want people to see online. Banner has stated before that originally she went to school because the costume make she was working for, on Broadway, pushed her to go. She originally studied costume making. She also does a lot of research in her own time and takes the time to go through many sources to find the constancy in garment making.

I really appreciate Bernadette's comments about vintage clothes. As someone who's tall, none of it (zero) ever fits me and it impacts my entire relationship with them, which I love but, barring sewing inferior versions of them myself or paying someone a sh*t ton of money to do it, are completely out of my range.

I so relate to her feelings on wearing historical dress. I cannot imagine being forced to wear uninteresting, boring modern clothing day in and day out. Yes, jeans/leggings and T-shirt for work...no real choice there...but as soon as I'm off work, it's corsets & crinoline and my Victorian finery. And that's when I feel like...me.🙂

That's wonderful! I'm just starting to get the confidence to dress how I want to - my style is more similar to Rachel Manksy (lots of brown bodices, full skirts, floral embellishments etc) and I'm not a good seamstress (yet!) but I've started integrating historical details and items into my wardrobe and altering my boring clothes, and I feel so much more like myself! I bake and decorate cakes, and I made a Yule Log for my son's Yule Feast which was last night. I assembled a mixture of sprinkles that resembled a forest floor. I had some crystal sugar "rock candy" that came in tiny cubes, and I scattered them around the log as it lay on the sprinkles. And I told the audience that the log fell from a tree that grew near a brook, and the brook froze hard around the edges, and when the log fell, it shattered the ice around it. And everybody fitted that story into the context of the Yule log (which had flaming high-proof rum poured over it before we served it.)

I'm actually studying archeology, and to be completely honest, my draw to historical clothing feels natural, along with history and the knowledge and how it is used for archeology. Going to school changed my life, and still is considering I am still ranting about unrelated topics.

I also started to sew again and pattern draft because I am not a standard size. Plus size so limited choices but also small shoulders, large bust and short legs. To get anything to fit I needed to adjust even commercial patterns eight ways so why not start fresh and just make something that works for me. I like the idea that it works because I am focusing on the yeah perfect for me and skipping the boo I don’t fit this or this or this or this …

Same!! I'm an absolute beginner so all I can really do is alter clothes a little, but I became really disheartened trying to find a pattern for my first dress. In the end I've been Frankenstein-ing a pattern from a modern dress that fits me like a glove, and a historical dress pattern. Wish me luck!!! Hope you're doing well 🥰

I’ve never seen your videos before, but I have watched Bernadette banner’s videos before. That was how I noticed this video. But the main reason I’m writing this comment is because when Bernadette talked about appreciating other people for wearing something that is really their sense of style(I hope you know what I mean I’m bad at explaining things), I really agreed. At my school there’s a definite style that most people dress in, so whenever I see someone wearing something really unusual, I always silently applaud them. I dress unusually, but it’s not like anything other people wear, even the unusual people. Basically what I’m saying is I can relate.

i generally wear lolita fashion on the weekends when i go out and do stuff, but ever since i started watching bernadette banner ive been experimenting more with historical styles outside of that. ive started to buy and make some more 1890s-ish style clothes. i primarily upcycle existing, usually thrifted clothes but i still enjoy watching people sew things from scratch. i love watching bernadette while im sewing stuff myself to keep me motivated, as my adhd keeps me more inclined to bounce from one thing to another, its nice to have someone talking about what im doing/interested in to keep me on the right track!

Asian Expo in Pomona, CA Nearly a decade ago I gushed over the absolute craft beauty of a Cosplay costume. Pintucks, ruffles, gathers...handsewn hems and eyelets (instead of metal).and stays in the back as well as the front. His attention to accessories for hair style, gloves, shoes made it complete. My daughters don't sew and couldn't believe my (old woman) intense interest in a man in full cosplay regalia of a Japanese female anime character. He told me when he bought linen for the chemise and petticoat, the fabric store staff assumed he was making several pirate shirts instead. Lol

Video suggestion: I know you've done a video on the various looks of the 1920s, but would you mind doing a breakdown of what sort of wear is good for any given occassion? For instance, what would be appropriate wear for tea vs dinner vs casuap town wear. I knownit varries greatly in this period, but what are some good rules of thumb?

A good resource for this might be an old etiquette book such as Emily Post's. I have her "Blue Book of Social Usage" from 1922 and it has full chapters on both men's and women's dress and what is appropriate for all occasions and times of day.

No! Do not drop of the internet! I love the 1890 to about 1900. I love witch clothing. I just learned about Dark Academia, love it too. I am not good at sewing and I am trying to make my own Victorian clothing. I think it is the best era. Your videos help. My favorite colour is black, and anything dark. I did started dressing 1940 to 1950., (liking 1960's now also), in the summer. Which is so weird to me still, wearing colour. More 1930 Autumn colours in Autumn. But late Victorian and black will always be my love. The same goes for the houses, the interior decoration. I need to live in a castle to be able to decorate it the way I like. Gothic style castle or mansion, with a Victorian interior design 💜 My friend always says I want to live in the Adams family mansion. (the one with Morticia). Well yeah!

I consider making your own quality clothing thrifting. I buy vintage clothing from thrift stores and I have secondhand pieces I have worn for 15-20 years. The quality of new store-bought clothing, even if it is expensive, is often very disappointing. One of the things I love to see is frayed or mended clothing - there is something beautiful about appreciating something old and maybe a bit past its prime.

Just stumbled across Bernadette's channel a few days ago and absolutely love it....loved history and geography since school (many moons ago) and still do! Now your video showed up, with Bernadette in the thumbnail, so obviously I had to watch! Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed it and liked and subscribed while here.... It's wonderful to see channels like this, something that you can enjoy with some tea, coffee or any of your favourite libations, take you away from madness of today, let your tired soul catch its breath....my hat's off to you, Bernadette and all the others, which I look forward to find! I wish I could connect to fashion like you do. I love to admire pieces in different media but wearing them is a different story. Being a plus size girl keeps me away from trends and style. I'd like to try making myself a skirt but my proportions are so off that using or finding a pattern that would work is near impossible. Any advice?

DIY a dress form (even a really basic one, like the one you make from duct tape) and learn to draft/drape straight from it. The second benefit is, you can hang clothes like skirts off of them so you can let them get pulled down by gravity for how it'll _actually_ look versus how it looks when drafted, cut and sewn all on the ground.
