Amazing how Carson spent the first couple of minutes settling her nerves and any embarrassment she felt by asking her whether she rehearsed the entry, how there are quite a few who have fallen.......complimenting her on her shoes.... quick thinking and sensitivity - class act
And what happened to her?? She doesn’t have her own business line?? And is she doing more movies?? Is she successful for being a professional singer and actress? Where’s drew Barrymore now??
She was the first little kid I've ever seen that actually had something she wanted to say rather than just answer questions that had been posed to her. That is extremely rare in a kid her age.
@@janbrandonjr LOL I wasn’t sure if I was going to find you. Us “red pilled” minds just can’t take ANYTHING at face value. Im unsure 100% either way. If it’s scripted then That would mean 16minutes of perfection.
Good point, she is one of those unique and rarely seen little kids who seem to have an old soul. Kinda makes you ponder the concept of reincarnation! 😉
I couldn’t get over how smart & so interested she was to listen to Johnny Carson as she smoothly & confidently responded to 16:11 Johnny Carson’s questions.
To think this little sweetie started drinking and doing drugs shortly after this, ended up in rehab at 13 and attempted suicide at 14. Heartbreaking. But somehow she turned her life around and is as sweet and adorable as a grown woman 👏 Team Drew for life
@@MsTinkerbelle87 it’s in nobody’s “blood”. She had an unstable home life, and both her parents introduced her to drugs and alchohol. Her father was a violent drunk, and her mom would take her out with her friends late at night, five times a week or more and let her drink and do other bad stuff like that. Because drew would feel anxious before interviews like this, her mom would get her drunk to help her “loosen up” and become more talkative. It was the influence of her parents… I really think drew wouldn’t have gone down such a dark path if she just had more responsible parental figures in her life. Poor thing :( she was SO young…
I know, I was thinking the same thing. She’s about a year older than me, and I always loved her and kind of looked up to her growing up. She was such a delightful, real, bright, charming little girl, and it’s so heartbreaking watching this interview, because you know what’s coming. She pulled out of it, though. Mad snaps for that. She still seems like a very warm and kind and down-to-earth person.
This young sweetie kept me in my dreams of sisterhood since her and my bid to sorority, which I did not take. If Adam Sandler, and her were a thing, it's good they left each other, bc Adam is sort of devilish. She is too sweet!!!
She's smarter than me .. and I am an adult (professional loser) .. also I have fear of speaking publicly .. can't act .. can't dance .. but, unlike her, I am extremely good at uncharming people. She's amazing!
@@cinemaparadiso5402 Good Morning, I'm going to tell you that you are not a loser! No one is. We all have different personalities, different traits and talents. Some are great actors, some great chefs, etc. Rise up and Shine! You too are great! 😊
@@mariamercy7317 I fear becoming homeless ... Mom is extremely sick & @ the hospital... I am on several antidepressants, sleeping aids and Nexium ...I am pretty sure I am a professional loser 🥲 .. however, sweet, kind, caring people like you are exactly what the world needs now! ❤️❤️❤️
@@ashleyrae6393 Some kids are so young & have such personality & ability to talk & act. It's NOT because she was drinking & on crack. What you are saying is very disrespectful to a talented young kid.
Drew Barrymore was a darling then and Johnny Carson loved every minute of it. I loved the way he treated her with respect. That's one class apart Host.
She was absolutely charming and I've always cheered for her. To know about the very adult situations she was put in as a child is heartbreaking. She's a strong and sweet person and I'm happy she fought her way thru it and landed on her feet. You're fabulous Drew.
At the tender age of 7 years, she responded boldly and marvellously to all questions flawlessly in the presence of huge crowd, who in turn responded cheerfully. Hats off. 👍
Because the farther back in time you go the more people treated children with respect and responsibility allowing them to be like this unlike today where we treat them like babies until aged 18
At seven years old, her personality was already larger than life. She was destined for great things. I remember that when it aired, I would safely say Miss Barrymore is true Hollywood Royalty.
Yeah, I'm so happy she was among one of many successful child actors to obtain success in adult life like Ron Howard, Jodie foster, not succumbing to drug/alcohol abuse.
Agreed. And at the very end he reminded her to wave to the audience, and then she had the presence of mind to turn back and wave to him. Johnny was perfect with her.
Repent to Jesus Christ “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-comes not from the Father but from the world.” 1 John 2:15-16 NIV I
Drew is an incredible human being. To go from this, to Hollywood party favour, to a has been, all before she completed her teens. Most people wouldn’t even try for a comeback after all that, but thankfully, she did, and she’s STILL a total sweetheart! 🤩
Back, when late night talk show hosts, were enjoyable and fun to watch. Today, they can be too political and mean spirited. Drew was adorable, interacting with Johnny. Miss those days.
As heartwarming as this is, it also makes me think how hard and dangerous and stressful it can be for kids to be in the spotlight of entertainment business. Is also eerie how she keeps hinting at things that were wrong with her mom ("she would kill me", "she is always on the phone").
That's kids for ya... often spill beans. Maybe that's why a lot of parents don't want their kids to talk. The parents keep things under wraps and whether their kids would tell something to others outside the immediate family that would be personal, wrong or whatever, my father didn't want us kids speaking out. I cannot count how many times when I was growing up at home that my father said " I'm going to tell you something but it should be kept in the house." I suppose he felt a need to share stuff anyway that often should not have even been said. 😱
the part about "my mom would kill me..." Is metaphorical, not literal! as far as "my mom is always on the phone" how many people would Drew have known at age 7 to need to speak to by phone?!! Not very many. This 20 or 30 years ago when people used wind up dial phones, and party lines, I am about 4 or 5 years older than Drew, and my parents didn't let me talk non stop on the phone at that age. Also I didn't know very many people to talk to. Now, 12/19/2022 I have about 350 contacts in my Moto G Pure Smartphone and email list and other Social media like RU-vid. We live in a different world than Drew's 7 y.o. world back then.
@@LunazulBaraka Drew was probably just joking about that. I'm sure she was saying that she wanted more kisses than she was getting, her mother being busy.
But brilliant, good timing and understanding for a child.Things to say of her own and of importance! Had a song ready for him and honesty givin without embarrassment! (Teeth)👍🏿
I’m 60 n watching this brought tears too my eyes. I’ve had 6 back surgeries in the 90s n struggled with opioid addiction for 10 years then heroin for almost 5 years n by the grace of God I’ve got 10 years clean n sober September 4th of 2024 n had no support from anybody through it all but like Drew I found my own way out of addiction. So glad for her today.
What an enchanting and confident little girl. Drew really was a star even at 7 years old. Its shocking to think that around this age she was partying at the infamous Studio 54, taking drugs and drinking. Its great that Drew managed to turn her life around and never look back. It's lovely to see Johnny engaging so well with Drew. He doesn't patronise or belittle her but speaks to her on a adult level. Wonderful interview
Seeing this for the first time in 2024 due to the RU-vid algorithm. I was always a fan of Johnny Carson and the show but never saw this interview. Young Drew is beautiful and charming. I love how Johnny Carson made her feel relaxed and comfortable. I totally enjoyed watching this. I wonder if grownup Drew ever looked back at this moment? ❤❤❤❤
Only Johnny Carson could have handled with such grace and humor to make it totally entertaining. He never made jokes at the desk for his own ego when talking to guests…much like hosts today when they interview. They don’t make em like Carson anymore. He was pure class.
What a fantastic interview! She was well beyond her years! What talent, genuine love and kindness. Unfortunately, things took a bad turn, yet she managed to plow through those challenges and pick herself up and brush herself off. What a beautiful example of faith and believing in oneself! Today she is on the other side of the desk interviewing her guests with the compassion Johnny had for her! So proud of the woman she is today!!! ❤We love you, Drew! ❤
Her estrangement from her mom started early & the conversation Drew had w/ Johnny gave us insight that the emotional distance.she had w/her mom began @ a very early age. So sad that drinking & drugs became her refuge as a result of that mother / daughter relationship. Happy that Drew found herself & became a great mother to her daughters, a great actor, business woman, talk show host, etc. Her tough childhood gave her the drive & desire to prove the naysayers wrong & has succeeded on so many levels in her life. Kudos to you, Drew!

She had such a fabulous attitude and personality for such a young child. Quick-witted, totally comfortable to speak her mind, personable and able to keep the conversation flowing. Insane! I couldn’t do so well as a 28 year old. She really hasn’t changed at all. Such a sparkly person. I love Drew ❤

Yes. And I’d actually say the same about Drew. (Except of course, she’s still here). Never has someone been so abused by Hollywood and still prevailed and survived with a fairly level head. She’s one of a kind.
Carson was a class act. He did great interviews, and took this 7yr old seriously as an actress. He could have yukked it up for the crowd, but he didn't. Drew had a tough life after ET but Stephen Speilberg kept an eye on her and she grew up spending time with him and his family through the years. I saw an interview on her show with him - he surprised her for her birthday. The bond between Speilberg and Drew is father/daughter and to this day she still loves him.
@@sweetmisvixen she basically was on her own from age 8. Her mom was busy partying etc. Drew became a drug addict by the time she was 11, by herself at Hollywood parties and hanging with people much older than her. In her late teens she was in rehab and got herself figured out, but went through a lot of stuff in those 10 years. I'm proud of her for coming out stronger and whole. Many child actors don't make it
It is wonderful to see him speak to her like a person. So many people talk about kids to the adults around them instead of interacting with them one on one. This is so endearing. They are captivated by one another. 🥰
Carson had one of the quickest minds in TV. And Drew Barrymore. Not enough can be said. She popped out of the womb being unique and extraordinary and has remained so.
Love Carson! He doesn’t make any wisecracks. He treats the seven year old with the same respect, and he can be on the save wavelength - notice when Drew put her cheek on her hand he’s unconsciously mirroring the gesture - and make her relax. I miss him.
Drew is a contemporary of mine so I, of course, never saw this live. However, I heard this interview mentioned over the years and I am just now watching it for the 1st time. What a fantastic interview! She was a precious precocious child and I'm glad that after all she was exposed to, she turned out so well.

she is unreal at this age...so poised and calm. She turned out to be such a great young woman despite all the neglect and lousy parenting. I have grown to really admire her. Team Drew to you honey! 💙👋
At the tender age of 7 years, she responded boldly and marvellously to all questions flawlessly in the presence of huge crowd, who in turn responded cheerfully. Hats off.
Poor girl is drunk here. It's soooo sad seeing all these naive comments, calling this "cute," while these people are clearly oblivious as to the real reason why she feels so "relaxed" in this. I'm guessing they know nothing about her mother or her life. Yikes.
She must have been born kind and empathetic. I’m so glad she was able to get a grip on her substance abuse problem early. What a wonderful chance it gave her at a very satisfying life and career🥰
Drew survived the Barrymore fame embraced it & all that went with it ~ Most adorable child ever ~ she is happy now with her own children & even a Tv show ~ Bless Drew 🩷
So Beautiful and Sweet and talented is this Sweet little Girl … who I am glad I say her as a grown Up Lady who is still very Dear , all the Best to Her , By the way Mr. Carson was One of the Kind Himself , God bless His dear Soul 🌹🌹👍👍🙏🙏
I just love Drew Barrymore. It's surprisingly incredible that she still has the same mannerisms when she is live on instagram, the same charm. What an incredible woman she is. ♥️♥️
Such a cute and endearing interaction! I somehow love this old man! The interaction between little Drew and him is like between a granpa and a grandchild! So cute! Loved the way he made her comfortable when she tripped! Glad this popped up on my feed🩷
At seven years old she is so exceptionally spontaneous, unpredictable and so much at ease. No wonder she is so endearing and successful. Makes me feel embarrassed at my age, lol
How does a 7 year old steal the show effortlessly like that? I completely lost track of time and enjoyed every minute of it. Props to Carson for letting her shine.
@@mannelshah It's sad but true. She was just about to skid into those difficult years. But Drew made it through and has transmuted that b.s. into Light. She is an icon for many people who've gone through similar life circumstances. Love her!
@@OnlyFans.com-LauraVittadini Yeah, maybe that's why she slipped on her way in? The booze must've been an unconscious and poor mechanism for managing nerves and stage jitters.
Drew demonstrated a high level of intelligence and an enormous personality. Even back then it seemed children in Hollywood were exposed to a lot that wasn't appropriate for their age. Drew is one of the few people with the innate attributes needed to take the journey she did and ultimately keep it together.
It's crazy to know she was battling a drug addiction this young. She was not sober here. She didn't get sober the first time until she went to rehab at the age of NINE.
She’s absolutely adorable & smart with tons of personality! Johnny was the bestttt Tonight Show host and is still enjoyable to watch all these years later.
She was such a personable little girl. What must she be thinking when she sees herself, watching that today. When you normally see child actors interviewed, they seem to just be "little kids", but Drew had such a great personality at such a young age. It's no surprise that she continued her career out of childhood and further as an adult. I thoroughly enjoyed this clip.
It's sad to know that Drew was alcohol and drug addicted at such a extremely young age (she literally had to go on rehab with 9 years), plus she was getting abused by so many old men at parties and getting neglected by her own mother. Like her mom doesn't even give her a good night kiss. That's just for shadowing how she was searching for any type of affection in older men, who have totally different intentions with her. She luckily found a way out of that, she's definitely a strong woman.
@@anni1348 right the whole interview is so cringe . This is weird and people need to wake up , she is a victim. She never had a chance . Her parents sold her out to Hollywood. Nobody protected her from the evil people and things in Hollywood.
