I am a psychiatric NP and find Drew Peterson's story stupidly fascinating. Drew is a master manipulator and I am dumbfounded at his ability to control people and his environment to the extent of the devastation he has created. I cannot believe he was allowed to get as far as he did in every aspect of his life without someone calling him out for his mental instability and the fact that he should have been disbanded as a police officer years before. He had to of walked the line for years but was able to use his charm (if you can call it that) charisma and sociopathic/narcissistic personality in every aspect of his life. Drew is one of the scariest types of personalities I deal with in my practice as he lacks empathy and does not care about leaving a path of destruction with anyone he comes into contact with. His MO is so easy to see. People are simply a means to an end and he will leave no stone unturned with each conquest. The sad part of all is that he will never reveal what he did to Stacy simply because she became another problem (this "hurt" him as he sees himself as the victim) and it strokes his ego to know that withholding the truth will never allow closure to those who are hurting. SICK

Excellent marital advice: remove the murder component. On a serious note, the point you make about law enforcement ignoring that it could be him is a persistent criticism of law enforcement that leads to significant trust erosion as can be seen, again, in the recent delay of arrest of the McMichael father/ son case in Georgia. My understanding is that those in law enforcement do recognize that as a subset of the population they have similar problems among their ranks such as alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, suicide and so on. Because they are public servants they are held to a higher standard and more scrutiny. I have the feeling, no data though, that seeking mental health therapy may be more stigmatized, in private not a public position, in law enforcement circles than may be acknowledged. That would be a good subject for someone to tackle, specifically focused toward law enforcement. Cops to counseling! Thank you for your interesting work.
@evelynwaugh4053
@evelynwaugh4053 4 года назад
I don't think seeking counseling is seen as an advantage in any occupation or profession, yet many of these are very high stress and present unique access to abusable substances. There is a high incidence of prescription drug abuse and alcoholism is physicians and nurses, for example, and detection of their abuse or addiction can risk their medical licences and livelihoods. It is also an issue for pilots and truck drivers, although they don't have the access temptations. Most large departments have Employee Assistance Counseling Programs as well as good medical insurance, because taking care of a problem when it is manageable can save large lawsuits down the road as well as retain employees who have received very expensive training. But the stigma of needing any kind of help is real, as are the liability concerns of employers.

Where I went to school they made it mandatory to listen to a nurse who had done time on drug charges. I cannot say it was the highlight of my life. But, I could see she was sincerely sorry. It took about 5 years but eventually she got her license back.

The reason police tend to look the other way when other cops commit crimes is two-fold. First, the basis for their authority rests on the perception (by themselves and all civilians) that they occupy moral high-ground, and so everything that contradicts that - most commonly a criminal in their own ranks - threatens that perception, thus the very basis for their authority. Second, there's a strong code of brotherhood that's similar to family bonds and comradeship in war, that makes them want to protect their own, regardless of their behavior. These days it's painfully obvious that tendency to mutual protection undermines the very basis for authority they're trying to protect.

Just watched the Monster In My Family episode about him. In a home movie they show he literally tells Stacie “Look at me and tell me you love me” 🤮🤮🤮🤮 She was 17 when he met and love bombed her, her mother died when she was young. She was vulnerable and too young for that predator. She never stood a chance. They still have NOT found her body and that narcissist will never tell because once he does he will be completely obsolete. It is what feeds his delusions of grandeur. If he was done with them no one else could have them. Kathleen’s mistake (in his evil eyes) was asking for part of his pension, child support, and custody ALL NORMAL THINGS IN A DIVORCE. His first wife got away because she didn’t ask for anything of his in their divorce. He is sooooooo(not enough o(s) in the world ) insecure and had no real personality. He just put on a show like all other narcs and loved making those around him squirm( like the guy who helped with Stacie’s body) and the domestic violence against Kathleen during their marriage because she was opinionated and stood up for herself. He is just gross 🤮🤮🤮🤮. He could probably be a case study on Grandiose Narcissism. Thanks for the great video Dr. Grande. Your amazing.

From the time Laci went missing, until Scott's conviction in 2004, the whole country was riveted by the case and grieved for Laci and Connor. Of course we'll never know for sure, but it seems likely to me that Stacy named her daughter after Laci Peterson.

“The murder component of his marriages” lol! Yes, Drew’s marriages might have been successful if he had taken out the part where he murders his wives when he is not happy with them anymore! You crack me up! His first wife has stated that she didn’t ask for anything from him, left his pension alone, which she might have fought for in the divorce and might have been entitled to. His first wife has stated in interviews that Drew told her he could kill her and make it look like an accident. The first wife believes she is alive, only because she didn’t try to get anything from Drew in the divorce! Drew’s statements that he should have stayed a bachelor seem to mean he thinks he wouldn’t have had any of these issues if he hadn’t married, which reminds me of the Chris Watts case, where Chris states he wished he never met his mistress, as then, he wouldn’t have murdered his whole family. Both Drew and Chris seem to not blame themselves, and ignore that they chose to murder. Their brains are so twisted that they rather make a huge leap frog move backwards over the step where they chose to murder, as an attempt to blame their circumstances instead of themselves. They very well could be out of jail right now, if things played out differently, but the part where they chose to murder people is the reason they’re in jail. Narcissists really do think like children, in many ways!

I recently saw some women being interviewed because they were writing to Chris Watts & they had convinced themselves that he is innocent. I'd be interested to hear your take on why you think people who have done horrendous crimes then receive adulation from some women. Not sure if there's men that do the same with female murderers but i imagine there is. I've heard of other cases where the women have even gone on to marry the murderer even though he will never get parole.

The liners with “deadpan expression” were great as someone pointed out. I live close to Bolingbrook, IL where Drew Peterson lived. He was such a fearless sociopath (IMO) that he convinced his wives he would kill them. I know Stacy Cales was very young. I know she probably felt lost. but Kathleen Savio had a strong personality and fought Drew. She also really tried to warn people that if she ended up dead, he was responsible. It’s also shocking to me that they didn’t fight harder. I would have never allowed that man to kill me. I would have protected myself with weapons and been 100% on top of his movements. This sounds terrible because I can’t imagine being in any of those women’s shoes and I can’t possibly know what the circumstances were. Maybe Kathleen had to stay in the house on advice of her attorneys, etc. and didn’t want to involve family by moving in with them. That man, no matter how threatening would have not won. Poor Kathleen and Stacy. He’s the scum of the earth. It’s just shocking that no one was able to stop him and it took so long to get a conviction.

My takeaway: there is a stunning amount of incompetence in law enforcement in this country. It starts with training, so I am to believe that the institutions that are rearing young recruits into officers is grossly incompetent as well. I would suggest a third party or peer review verifying system, that looks over the evaluations of a recruit and decides whether they are fit to serve the public or not.

If you get the time, could you perhaps analyze the degradation of mental health on those that are homebound (for quite some time already) due to unemployment by consequence of having a "non-essential" type job and government decree in these rather trying times. Asking for a friend, who is spending waaaaayyyy too much time on RU-vid and FB.

I remember when he appeared on TV and implied that Stacy had premenstrual dysphoric disorder and alluded that she was just unstable as a reason for her disappearance. Seriously, when I heard him say this, I thought what a naive man to think that he would be able to convince a jury of his innocence. I felt this icy anger rise up in me. Honestly, he did have a serious disconnect with the general public. He didn't see himself the way others did. I guess he forgot that women would be on the jury, too, and see right through his bs. The way women can be discounted women because of their menstrual cycle is unnerving.......That is right, Officer Peterson, she had PMDD: preMARITAL dysphoric disorder. Being with you had to be very unsettling. RIP: Stacy.

Stacey was afraid for her life. She told a good friend that if she disappears, it will be because Drew kills her. She didn't think she could go to the police because he was a police officer and he'd gotten away with one murder already. I'm sure he threatened her with that very fact. Once she had kids, she was trapped. She would have had to go to a shelter, and again, she believed she wouldn't get police support.

@JEM471025 3 года назад
Which is understandable because Kathleen did go through all those things actually fighting for her life. With her family and the cops knowing what was happening. And she was still murdered. And Stacey technically could have taken her two children. But she had no legal grounds to take Kathleens children. And she loved them just as much as her own kids. And didn’t want to leave them with Drew either.

I’m sure it’s already been said, but Stacey wanted to leave Drew. She made that known to several people. Unfortunately I don’t think she knew how to get out, due to his connections with the police, him already getting away with murdering his ex, and she wanted to take her stepsons with her but legally wouldn’t be able to. Very sad.

A little late to the party, but wanted to tell you this is the most thorough and comprehensive synopsis of this crazy, crazy case. Peterson is a complete narcissist, with no regard for anyone but himself...the audacity of speaking the way he did in some of those interviews is just reprehensible. Just an awful, disgusting person all around, and I cannot believe these beautiful, amazing women even fell for him. Terribly sad. I sleep better at night knowing he will die in prison. He earned it for sure. Thank you for another great analysis Dr. Grande. Always a pleasure. 🙂

Don’t you think Peterson possibly just wanted revenge if he felt crossed? He strikes me as a person that just couldn’t accept being on the losing end of anything.
