Because it’s still hard to believe myself, I bought a Herman Miller eames lounge w ottoman in black and walnut at a garage sale last weekend for $100. I paid the price and when I flipped the ottoman over to load it, I saw the black Herman Miller tag meaning it was made between the 70s-90s. I’ve wanted this chair all my life and still marvel it found it’s forever home with me. The seller received it from a friend and didn’t like it. I originally offered $75 assuming it was a knock off. I didn’t fight handing over the crisp bill because it looked great other than some wear on the leather of the right arm. When I flipped the ottoman over I literally gasped. Seller asked me “what?” I told her it was an authentic Herman Miller, which she replied “is that ok?” Although I didn’t tell her she could have easily sold it for a couple thousand in big city (we live in a rural town) i told her “yes, yes it’s ok. I love it. I’ll have it for the rest of my life”

The Eames Lounge Chair featured is the Hille version which was made under licence in the UK from 1958 to 1967. Hille were an upmarket furniture manufacturer who were well known for dealing with the designer Robin Day. From 1968 Herman Miller designs bear the slim black label. The Hille label which is silver and red bears the Hille Logo as well as the Herman Miller name. I own a Hille version bought from Heals in 1965 which is looking a bit shabby these days but is still very comfortable.

Eames also designed splints for the ww2 soldiers with injuries. That's where they learned to bend plywood and later applied it to furniture.

Those aren't 'coach bolts', are they Drew at 6:00? Those are the original machine screws. Coach bolts have a smooth domed head and lock in place by the square shape behind it pulling into the wood when the nut and washer are done up. Also they're bigger in diameter; often a lot.

Why do people call Drew a rip off merchant. He buys and sells. He has buildings, utilities, employees and every other expensive a business owner can expect. Some deals he make a profit and some deals he will take a loss on. If the people b!tching want they are welcome to start their own business and take all of the risk. The diffecence between an Employee and a Business Owner, the employee usually has a guaranteed salary, the owner has no guarantee and takes all of the risk.

Omg, I cringed when he sat in it and leaned back. Those chairs are notorious for the backs snapping off the seat. It happened to a friend’s 80’s version, so I don’t want to even test the strength of 60’s one.
@SJ-yh2di
@SJ-yh2di 4 года назад
@valleywoodworker Nah, HM and Vitra have notoriously short warranties on these chairs, and the design has had to be tweaked from the original bc the shocks and cement dry out and become brittle. The plywood also becomes brittle over time. The store I had them at has ab 11 diff ones ranging from the 60's to the 2000's and the only ones I'd pay for and actually sit in would be the 2000's ones.

Can you imagine the money and effort this gentleman has spent restoring this big house and property to it’s former glory? This is testament to a great society and culture (western) that has evolved no only so that this magnificent house could be built in this first place but that an individual can follow his own path ( rare book dealer) , be successful, and make enough money to do this restoration project as well. This reminds me of the very distant past where only wealthy noblemen or clergy with their inherited wealth could choose to do something like this. We have to admire a society and culture in which something like this can happen. Thank you Western Culture! Thank you England, the mother of the world!
