Drift velocity is the average velocity with which electrons 'drift' in the presence of an electric field. It's the drift velocity (or drift speed) that contributes to the electric current. In contrast, thermal velocity causes random motion resulting in collisions with metal ions.
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We offer quizzes, questions, instructional videos, and articles on a range of academic subjects, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, history, economics, finance, grammar, preschool learning, and more. We provide teachers with tools and data so they can help their students develop the skills, habits, and mindsets for success in school and beyond. Khan Academy has been translated into dozens of languages, and 15 million people around the globe learn on Khan Academy every month. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we would love your help!

Without a battery, we assume that the number of electrons going the right side of any cross-section is equal to the number of electrons flowing towards the left. But when the battery is applied, it applies a force on the electron (potential difference) which drifts them towards the positive terminal.
@rupalichaudhury103
@rupalichaudhury103 3 года назад
If there is higher potential in one side of circuit .. will the drift velocity will change ?? 2. Velocity of electron flow does it depend on velocity of current ?? .3. If due to the higher potential difference of battery the circuit get heated then velocity of electron will decrease or not if yes then current should be decrease right????
@vivekbarjod6815

@@rupalichaudhury103 1.yes it will change as I increase , due to V=IR,where r is constant in wire,V increase I increase,I is charge flow per unit time,as charge flow increased implies drift velocity also increased!

how do we know the difference between positive and negative charge how do we define it ? who found out that there are 2 types of charges ? how do we came to know that the valence electrons are not stable without a battery ? if they are not stable why doesnt the shape of the conductor change or disintegrate ? ( without applying charge) how did we arrive to this conclusion that electron drift is at a constant velocity ? how can we increase it ?
