WOODSYDOC:
Hey Guys! Welcome to my channel, I'm Dr. Teresa Van Woy, author of "Wildflower, a Tale of Transcendence. In this video, I'll show you the very first piece of Driftwood I ever worked on. In Driftwood art sculpture #2 and #3, as I learned more, I show better tools and techniques than this one. In this video I take you along as I try to figure out and learn how to create a work of art from a piece of driftwood.
WILDFLOWER:
How can Mind Power help us to achieve goals? How can a homeless child with a mentally unstable and abusive mother become successful?
▶️Visit my website: www.drteresava...
Dr. Teresa Van Woy Specializes in diabetic wound care, sports medicine, pediatrics, trauma, and general podiatry.
Some of the world's rich and successful people didn't start off that way. They spent nights sleeping on the streets, in their cars, or on friends' couches. Some of them struggled with their situation while pursuing their dreams. Dr. Teresa Van Woy is one of them who struggled from childhood but ended up reaching her goals.
The power of goals and following your dreams is one of the fundamental keys in every successful person’s life. The basic secret towards the achievement of goals is commitment. Writing down the goals and deciding what you want is one task and getting to it is another. Since this is already known, you should not let it take you apart. Fear is the main hindrance toward the achievement of goals and dreams. Set your goals, start working on them, and never, ever give up. This is the way you will reach your destination. Transform your misfortunes into fortunes.
▶️ Overview of WILDFLOWER, A TALE OF TRANSCENDENCE:
Spending the night in juvenile detention wasn't the worst thing to happen to seven year old Teresa. Her much anticipated summer vacation from Florida to California turns to years of abuse when her mentally unstable mother abducts her and three of her eight siblings to settle in the slums of San Francisco's Tenderloin district. At the age of seven, she was left to fend for herself and her family.
During her time in San Francisco, young Teresa fantasized of a better life. Observing how the other half lived, she never let go of her dreams as she forged her way from homelessness and abuse to become a physician. At a young age, Teresa learned that with hard work and determination, you can get what you want in life.
So, watch till the end and share your thoughts in the comments.

Bravo for your phenomenal rise from poverty and abuse just as I have. What you've done is rare but when people like us are able to ascend the ladder of life we've had experiences that would have broken most people yet they can become valuable life experiences as adults when helping others. We are the fortunate ones in this world who survived to thrive one day. Blessings Sis! Peace, Bruce J Walters PS: I'm the guy with the polished rock from Mt. Shasta

This was a labor of love, Teresa! The video informs and educates. More significant to me is that you reveal your satisfaction and delight in the process. Many comments reflect how generous craftspeople can be with suggestions of ways to increase your joy/decrease the "pain and suffering" side. However you decide these practical matters, Teresa, I hope you'll always carefully preserve your personal process.

Great piece of driftwood, it would look good standing on the flat end too, mounted on a base. I would use a dremel for some of the clean up and your hair dryer or even better a can of compressed air for dust removal. Also coating options I use are simple butcher's block mineral oil, or gorilla wood glue mixed with water. For good durability clear water based/oil-modified polyurethane. What you did works very well too and you did a fantastic job.

You're welcome, it's my pleasure helping someone with a passion, especially concerning driftwood art, and yes most Home Depot's or other hardware/department stores have butcher's block/cutting board oil. It gives a sort of matte look, non toxic and smells nice, and some of it has bees wax in it too. Hope you can find something that works for you and best of luck with your art.

Great video, Teresa. Several tools will help for those concave and tight areas. First, a sander with a flapper wheel--little pieces of sandpaper arranged like book pages around a circular wheel. Also, various woodworker hand tools: Carving gouges are like chisels, but with bowl shaped blades (you could even sharpen a spoon), some small enough for the handle to fit in your palm. Also carving knives (you pull rather than push). Some have curved blades. Check a woodwork supplier. Thx for the video.

This is the best video on preparing wood that I have seen. The only piece I have built with driftwood is a gate for my fence, and while it turned out beautiful, it only lasted about 3 years before it started falling apart. Now I am going to build a new one, but am looking into how to prepare the wood so that it will last. Thank you for pointing out the finer details of your process, because some of us are just not as intelligent as others, and don't necessarily pick up on those finer details as easily. I think I have a lot of sanding to do. And even though I don't really want a shiny finish, I think I may go with a polyurethane just to try and keep the ants out of it. Any suggestions in that area would be greatly appreciated.
@DrTeresaVanWoy
@DrTeresaVanWoy 5 лет назад
Thank you so much. Yes, there is polyurethane that's made specifically for outdoors. Epoxy would be good, too, but then you'll have a very shiny coat and it's more difficult to apply. I'd love to see it when you're finished. Anyone else have suggestions?

@DrTeresaVanWoy
@DrTeresaVanWoy 4 года назад
Oh, heck no. Keep your piece. Especially if it has frogs living in it. ♥️♥️. Sealing it would be enough. I just meant that if it had any dry rot or anyting, it could still continue throughout the years, but really, nothing to worry about.

I can't wait to get to them and I'll be using the tips and techniques you shared. I have a small very unique piece that was waterlogged and then I bleached it. What would you suggest as a finish to keep the whiter bleached color?
@DrTeresaVanWoy
@DrTeresaVanWoy 6 лет назад
Lynn Embley thank you. So far, in my experience, if I wet the wood with water, that shows me what the final outcome will look like with the finish, or maybe just a couple of shades darker. You can always try the beeswax finish on a tiny piece and I'd it darkens it too much, you can sand it off. (Or a finish that's already on the market)
@myutube6422
@myutube6422 3 года назад
Thanks for the info. Since this piece appears too large to put in an oven, could you use a heat gun to dry out the areas that you said were "wet"? Also, have you tried painting on the liquid beeswax mixture, to save a step of using the heat gun?
@DrTeresaVanWoy
@DrTeresaVanWoy 3 года назад
The Wetness I was referring to was deep in the wood. It probably could have sat in the Sun for a couple of weeks to dry out ? Or maybe it would have never dried since it was part of the rotten wood? I have yet to try using the beeswax while it's still melted. Have you? It's something I still keep saying I'll do but haven't done it yet. I feel like the hot gun Pushes the beeswax deeper into the wood, but not sure if that's completely true or not?
@myutube6422
@myutube6422 3 года назад
@@DrTeresaVanWoy I have used it liquid and you could still use the heat gun too. I also use mineral oil full strength. Then the beeswax mixture, I make it more liquid, so it doesn't get real hard, but it will do what you need on the piece.

Yes, that's a great idea. And you're absolutely right, extremely flammable. I will include that in my description. Thank you. Linseed oil is also very flammable and combustible. I put a turbo nozzle that came with the electric pressure washer. I sprayed about 12-18"s away so not todamage the job. It's very clean now.

I cleaned a similar piece of root wood from the side of the road. I didn't sand it but when I "cleaned" it I used a rough piece of wood all over and it worked great in the recesses to clean out all the dirt and soft stuff. Maybe a blunt ended one and a sharper ended one for the cracks. Also instead of a chisel use rounded end carving tools for the inside. Much easier and faster. It didn't have a sanded finish but it did have a smooth finish.(I don't like such a clean finish as a sanded one). Also when applying bees wax why not use a wide mouth container and use cheesecloth or something similar to apply it and maybe get a faster coverage. Maybe in the recesses you could use a stick wrapped with cloth. Also, MinWax makes a beeswax that I see a lot of woodturners use for finish unless you just like making your own. These may or may not help you but maybe some will. Thanks for the video. Awesome piece of wood.

No. It came apart in two pieces. One long and one short. My daughter has the small piece. Don't remember where the other went. Added a piece of turquoise to the small one and it's now a dust collector. lol I have a 5 1/2 ft, 8 inch diameter hollow fence post with woodpecker holes in it that I need to do something with. There's only about an inch of wood all the war around. It's really cool. I want to leave it as is but I don't think it would sell that way. Maybe I'll(cringe) clear coat it. Maybe Danish Oil it and then beeswax it. I've had it for 10 yrs and I think it's time I did something with it. It's one of a kind so I have to make the right choice for value's sake.

OMG a zest grater?? Her in Australia the hardware store has a fibre wheel attachment for your drill or angle grinder. These are similar to a wire wheel but less severe and they are used for dirt removal, sanding uneven surfaces. Your sander is flat and not getting into the undulations which the wheel will. Also any panel beater or body work supplier, not sure what you have in the states, but they have an open rasp or file, very similar to your zester but purpose built, and they’re nowhere near as expensive as a zest grater. I use the above as well as a compressor with air nozzle and a pressure adjusting pressure washer. You need one where you can turn the press down or it’ll blow your wood to kindling. Hope that helps. It’ll save you a heap of elbow grease and the fibre wheel lasts a lot longer than sandpaper.

Mark, this is great advice! Thank you so much. I only recently (2 weeks ago) learned about the angle grinder. Oh my gosh. What a difference that made. I can only use it for short periods at a time due to its weight, even though I got the lightest one, ... and even though I can't work on the piece of wood for as long as I would have been able to otherwise, it's still going to save me hours and days of time. I love that too! And I'm definitely going to look into the fiber wheel. I do use the metal ones now, but you're right, it makes all kinds of scratches in the wood. Thank you for the advice!

NICE work! Very awesome piece of driftwood. I use high gloss polyurethane to bring out all colors. If you want to clean “holes” with a chisel & take a chance on gouging the wood, consider a pressure washer. Obviously do not a pinpoint nozzle to “eat” through the wood. a nozzle with a broad spray pattern. It will clean out areas you’d never get to with anything else. Even an air compressor won’t do the job. Clearly it will become wet again. But it will be clean as clean can be. Then I place mine in the oven at the lowest setting. (Mine is 180 degrees) Then get the wood hot, NOT cooked!pul it out of the oven & let it cool; and repeat depending on size/thickness of the driftwood and how much power-washing you had to do. (In other words, how wet did you have to get it? Sure this takes longer because of the extra drying, but imho, the best way I clean my driftwood. I live in the Pacific NW, so much of our lake driftwood can have lots of pine needles buried where you never could see nor clean w/o power washing. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for sharing!

Teresa Van Woy I own 2; one is battery powered (Worx brandname) love it! the other is electric. I like the Worx brand because there are 5 different spray patterns on 1 wand & the pressure clean well w/o “cutting” into the wood like the electric model. Best of luck.

From my experience poly or spar varnish will protect it outdoors but Dutch oil ,teak oil work good on inside pieces but wax will really pop if you let it start to harden then buff it with a dremel. I'm still learning myself

And seems to last for years laying on the beach untouched.if you had any type of finish to preserve it longer, you will end up with a shiny gloss look to it which changes the look completely. I think leaving it alone is fine.

Samantha Botheju I use beeswax from a local beekeeper.... Shave the wax with a grater into a jar then fill the jar about 3/4 way up the wax with turpentine. Then put the jar in a double boiler, stirring until completely melted. Be careful because he turpentine is extremely flammable. Once melted, remove from the stove and let it cool until it hardens.

I don't use turpentine anymore. I use simple olive oil. And it's so the bees wax doesn't get hard as a rock. It keeps it softer like a paste so you can smooth it over the wood. I have a separate video on how to make the beeswax finish
