Australia to Germany is a long way..,been there 3 times but you guys are twisting my arm to return...thankfully Aldi do send these German beers over here to drink this time of year
On a class trip to Germany from the US when i was 16, me and 8 other students got fairly ripped with our German teacher (shout out to Frau Treskin for letting us experience some local flavor) in the Munchen Hofbrauhaus on a Friday night, still one of my favorite beer-drinkng experiences almost 30 years later. Loved your video, and your pronunciation!
My southern German wife watched the beginning of this episode over my shoulder and it turned into us listening and critiquing German pop and folk music! You gents are always an informative yet fun time, Prost
My little brewing group are all meeting up at one our members' house on the 28th October for our very own 'Festoff'. We have all brewed versions of Oktoberfest biers. Mine's a Märzen which I brewed in April (near enough). I'll be taking homemade sausage rolls and focaccia. Clash of cultures but you get the idea. Chaps, this is all the inspiration I need. Thanks.
Love seeing the lads enjoying themselves on the afternoon lash - and Jonny still getting the historical factoids even as things get a little lairy and the frequency of jump cuts increases
I was there last week with my bro! The weather was terrible! Was in the Lowenbrau, Augstiner, Spaten and finally invited with a guy and his wife to their booked table in the Hacker Pschorr tent. Great week was last week.🍺🍺🍺🍺🇬🇧🍻😀
Really funny that I (from Germany) ordered beers from breweries at the UK that brewed some Festbier for our Festbier Tasting, because we cannot drink our German Festbier anymore. And you two guys order and love these. Human always like what they cannot have in their daily life 😬
I just came back from a trip to Fredericksburg, TX, my favorite little German town, for Oktoberfest! I have to say that Paulaner and Hofbrau are easily my favorite festbiers to drink each year! I love your channel! Prost! 🍻
This guy is really knowledgable! I am from Munich - and I learned a lot in this video! (Just one tiny correction: "Wiesn" is NOT pronounced like "vicen". But rather like "vee-sen".)
Hacker Pschorr is still my favorite one and fortunately, it is available at my local store every September. So, I stock up on them to have some left for Christmas as well.
...this is now me, from Munich, watching 2 Brits enjoying Oktoberfest beer and commenting very seriously the different beer varieties - just entertaining and educating! Great Job!
Well done guys. 25 years since I went to Oktoberfest, and you sang that Hofbrau song and I was like "I KNOW THAT". Haven't heard it for 25 years, yet recognised it instantly and raised a big smile. Admittedly it is played a LOT so maybe my memory had been desperately trying to erase it for all that time 😄
Loved the review. Was at Oktoberfest this year (2022) and drank in the Spaten and the Lowenbrau tents. Seating at a premium, so we stayed put. Fair reviews. I loved the Hofbrauhaus in Munich centre and also drank in the Augustiner Stammhaus round the corner. My advice to everyone since I've come back.....GO! It is incredible, make sure you make the trip!
Just to help you out. I am john with the Thirsty Historian in Munich. a couple of facts for you. You have to brewer with in the city limits and your well has to draw water from within the city. The reason other breweries are not YET allowed to serve at Oktoberfest is becausse they need to make enough for the Wiesn and for local consumption. Hacker Pschorr and Thomas Brau were all together. They also have the Pschorr Bräurosl. 10,600 seats in the Paulaner Winzrer Fähndl.
couple things, as your designated Bavarian viewer. Theresienwiese is the place, so her name in English was Theresa, German Therese, and the other part is wiese, pronounced veezuh. Robbie Williams is usually, and should only be played at the end as a closing song. Besides that West Virginia, Sweet home Alabama, I will survive, and das Fliegerlied are the typical daily songs. The Oida Wiesn has more traditional songs Local word for Oktoberfest is Wiesn, pronounced veezen. Love the vids man!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel it feels like such a dick move to correct the video, so I'm sorry my German-ness came out like this. Also a quick bit of info, the Paulaner brewery moved a few years back for a few reasons, they wanted to expand and the well they dug downtown dried up. They moved out to Langwied and every Münchener swears that the taste changed, which some like and of course many hate. So I'm glad you guys like it since I always felt they got judged unfairly since the move. Another bit of info is that there is a push to add some tents, rather than have 20 of the same carnival game, people think adding 2 more tents would be nice. The beers for those tents are pushing from 4 breweries, Giesing, Tegernsee, Erding, and Chiemsee. There are a few others like Andechs from your Weißbier video. Giesing is a newer brewery that is located downtown, so they fit the criteria and people wonder why they haven't been allowed yet. Tegernsee is a very popular helles and many think it's the best, so they argue it should be at the Wiesn even though it is very outside of München. Erding is a funny story, because they were excluded from the Wiesn, because they are on the outskirts of town, so they always went to the other oktoberfests in spite. Now, Paulaner is just as far out of town as Erding, so everyone is wondering what the excuse could be to still exclude them. Chiemsee is just another really great helles that people think should be allowed to participate, since the king did plop an unfinished palace right in the middle of their lake. So yeah, so fun Wiesn info/drama
O'zapft is! Someday I'll go there and get proper drunk "Ein Prosit der Gemütlighkeit" is a toast to the good mood/vibes (and it's not limited to just Bayern, it's sung in bars in Köln, Hamburg and Berlin as well)
Life hack from a german here (I live about an hour away from munich) : Don't go to Oktoberfest. You can get the same beers or at least beers in a similar style for a fraction of the price in regular supermarkets. Oktoberfest or Wiesn is a big tourist trap and a bit of a scam. Try to get to some small village "Pfarrfest" (or maybe some "Volksfest" for the Funfair stuff) or similar events if you really want the Blasmusik and all that stuff. Oh and also here's a little linguistic help: We germans don't really have silent letters. If there's a P the P will be pronounced. So it really is Pschorr (Pshor) not "Shore". "Gemütlichkeit" can also be translated to "Cozyness" or "chill vibes" (as in chill out) kinda.
Totally understand that it's a tourist trap, but how is it a scam? I know locals think it is overpriced, but by the pint it is still less than half the price of a UK pint....
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Well yeah ok compared to UK prices it might be ok but man even the food is insanely expensive and not even that great. This year the Liter was 13 Euros. You can get a whole case of real high quality beers for that here. Also some of the Steins aren't even filled up. It's just a lot of foam you're paying for if the server isn't doing it right.
Really enjoyed the lesson again. I hadn’t appreciated that there were only 6 true Oktoberfest beers (none of which I have any chance of buying where I live!). I was all set for an antipodean Oktoberfest at the Rose and Crown in Townsville on Sunday but I finally got covid and have had to postpone it until later in the month. A fridge full of German beers and a special all grain pilsner that took 3 months to brew and mature properly - it wont be wasted, just late…
Lucky to go to Oktoberfest this year, my stag do, music and beer. Everybody friendly and welcoming..I will be going again .. ein prosit favourite song….Prost! 🍺
Oh Yes. Angels. I dont't know if thats only a german thing or if thats why they play it at the Oktoberfest, but Angels is what we call a "Rausschmeisser" which roughly translates to someone or something that kicks you out. Angels is often played as last song of an act or the evening to suggest to the audience it's time to leave now :)
Good excuse for a piss up in the brewdio. You must have a very understanding wife Jonny. CBC need to visit the real deal next year. Take Brad dancing to the Hoffmejster, a sight for sore eyes. Love you guys. Prost!
Was in the army stationed at nellingen for 18 months went to munich oktoberfest in 1970 what a party got hooked on german beer but cant afford the price here in the u.s. Sure miss the good ole german beer !
Giesinger Bräu now has a Munich water source, I think the only thing stopping them is finding a Wirt (the people who own and run the tents) to serve their beer at the Wiesn (that's the local name for the Oktoberfest)
Let me draw your attention to Giesinger Bräu. It is the latest brewery in Munich, that now also has it's own water supply. That is within the ruleset, to be called a "Original Müncher Hell" (original lager from Munich). So technically it also, would be able to sell their beer at Oktoberfest. But as we all know tradition is nothing that is changed quickly and this brewery is a hobby project that somewhere started in 2005 and culminated in a complete new brewery within the city border of Munich.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel The biggest challenge, they are facing right now, is their output. At the moment of writing, they have an output of about 30000 hectolitres per year. They are trying to reach up to 45000 in the near future. But to play with the big boys at Oktoberfest, they need to have an out of 7000 for 14 days. Yes days ... So a big way ahead for them. But I am very happy that you already know about Giesinger. It is even hard for locals, to get that kind of beer. Maybe you are lucky and will try it in the near future. Prost!
This is the first time I have ever really thought while watching your channel, these two are getting a bit drunk here 😅 Great video gentlemen, keep up the good work
Marvellous....you were both quite "refreshed" halfway through, which is testament to the beers' quality. I watched this drinking a nice glass of Malbec am I blocked now? 😁👍
Here in Croatia, the only festbier you can buy is the Paulaner, even though you can get regular H-P, Lowenbrau (brewed locally and it is dreadful) and HB.
Thanks for explaining the difference between Marzen and festbier, that always tripped me up. The Spaten Oktoberfest they sell in the States is brown and is labeled a Marzen. Weird how the stuff they serve in the beer tent is different from that
I actually enjoyed the Paulaner the least this year. It tasted quite boozy and rough to me, compared to the others. I think what makes the beer such a bestseller in Germany is that it‘s available virtually everywhere. For years, they used to do these promos of a Maßkrug and a 1 liter can that you could buy in many supermarkets, and this year even Aldi sold it in cans.
Great film lads, probably not your most professional offering but entertaining all the same. Highlight was Brad's response to Spaten inventing the fridge. 😆 Ordered all of those beers a couple weeks ago, apart from the Augustiner, as you say it's difficult to get hold of, although the company I ordered from got some in the day my box arrived ! 😠 I think the Paulaner one cost £3.20 which was reasonable but then I went in my local Aldi and they were selling it at £1.85 ! I bought 10. Would agree I was disappointed in the Hofbrau offering myself, much prefer their normal offering.
Did you guys review the correct Hacker-Pschorr? I've seen the "Oktoberfest Märzen" amber style from Paulaner, Hofbrau and Hacker-Pschorr which is not the same as fest beer served during Oktoberfest. Still great beer but not the same as the light/bright Oktoberfest blonde lager beer.
Y’all put Paulaner, Hacker Pschorr and Augustiner as your top three and this aligns pretty well with the Bayrische sensibilities. My wife ranks them 1)Augustiner 2)hacker 3)Paulaner 4)hofbräu 5)sparen 6) lowen
Apparently, the Spaten Oktoberfest we get in the States is different than the one you tasted. It's far more malty and amber-colored. It's my favorite Oktoberfest beer.
Schneider had a Oktoberfest Weiße this year, classical Schneider wheat beer with cascade hops. You should try that one! Also thanks for the video, I learned how to properly pour from a Bügelflasche!
You guys are doing a great job. I‘m from Munich and i can almost confirm everything you said. Hofbräu means that is was a Royal brewery, no Hasselhoff 😂
If I had to bet, I would bet that ALL of them are good because Marzen is a good recipe and because they're all German. Can hardly go wrong with German (or Czech) beer.
You convinced me to buy the Oktoberfest mixed 6 pack from my local craft distributor (Sydney, Australia). They had Schneider Weisse instead of Augustiner, which I guess means other breweries make Festbiers, though they don't have tents at Oktoberfest?
Only breweries located within Munich city limits are allowed to sell beer at Oktoberfest. After World War II, Schneider moved their brewery to Kelheim and officially lost the right to sell beer at Oktoberfest (but they have a beer hall in central Munich still). Many breweries in Bavaria have Festbiere - that's not unique to Munich. Local funfairs with beer tents take place all over Bavaria, multiple times a year. I live in a city of about 55,000 and we have three of them a year. I would recommend checking out a German festival, but not necessarily Oktoberfest. A lot of companies have corporate networking events at Oktoberfest in Munich, but folks from the region typically don't go - only one type of beer is sold, in one size, at prices around 40% higher than at the other local festivals.
You said in the comments that you pehaps intend to visit Bamberg? Definitely worth a trip. My mates and I have had many micro Brewery holidays there since the nineties. Take a look at the Beer book, "Neue Fränkische Brauereikarte" by Stephan Mack. That will open many peoples eyes as to where the best Bavarian beer is? And it ain't Munich!
