PORTO ALEGRE, RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL -
I finally made it to the South of Brazil where the culture takes a total shift to more of a European vibe. Southern Brazilians, many who are of German and Italian descent, are also obsessed with this drink called "Chimarrão" (otherwise known as "Yerba Mate").
I figured it would be a cool idea to go buy my own Chimarrão & learn how to make it. I also got some locals to tell me how it got so popular here.

Cool video, thanks for experiencing our culture. We were supposed to be independent from Brazil (and we were for 10 years) since the empire only wanted Rio Grande do Sul as a buffer state to protect the southern border (which was and still is the main one). The gauchos performed that job amazingly well and with no help from the empire whatsoever, "normal" people were compelled to form militias in order to survive and we defeated all the Castelhanos (and even had the political victory against the Brazilian Empire) during a perpetual state of war for almost 300 years. Sadly, almost the whole male population vanished because of that and most of our natives too. It's no surprise that the world famous war giant/firearms/ammo supplier Taurus is from Rio Grande do Sul. That's why we value our culture, traditions and are proud of it, it's too bad that most Brazilians (and even a minority of gauchos themselves like that couple in the video) don't undestand that and just think it's a matter of "arrogance" and whatnot.

I thought chimarrão was what the cup was called, I wonder if what they call the cup varies by region? Have you noticed any difference in the dialect with that?

Not sure but I know the Argentinians call the straw “bombilla” as opposed to the Brazilian “bomba”

illa is the diminutuve. Bombilla means little pump, bomba is pump.

Very cool Adam! I don't understand what's the point of keeping all those herbs on top without mixing them in water?
@adamjmatheson
@adamjmatheson Год назад
Good question. Basically if I mix in the Herbs there won’t be enough of a passageway for the water through the straw. When I first fill the cup I fill it through the hole and the Herbs sit on top of the water, essentially soaking into the bottom part of the Herb and giving me the flavor. Gradually throughout the drinking session some of that “top Herb” falls into the hole and also absorbs the water and as the rest of the Herb gets soaked I start to pour on the dry parts so I can get more fresh mate flavor. Make sense? That might’ve been total BS but it’s just what I feel is correct through my own experience of drinking. Thanks for watching

Man, I’m from Porto Alegre. Anything you want… just ask. I know where to go partying, touristic places and the whole nine yards. Rua padre chagas and the streets around could be a good start to grab a beer or going to nightclubs…

I actually think it’s a pretty fun city and the area by the water is a lot nicer than the historic center. Really an interesting place overall. Thank you for the info!
