In the end, I find it hard to argue with the quality of the music. A year after Sunbather, and the music still sounds great. So who cares about the word "hipster" anymore? Honestly.....

Dude can scream, the drummer kicks ass and the music is mostly interesting. That's what I want to hear when I listen to metal. I don't care if you have long hair and corpsepaint or the total opposite, it just doesn't matter. It's about the music, not the look. You like it or you don't. That's how art works.

Then they were used in an Apple iPhone ad. Can't believe we're coming up on the 10 year anniversary of this album. This album has meant so much to me, I can't even begin to describe. Thank you Kerry and George, specifically. And Dan, who really tied the room together with his drums.

No, they're hipsters because they aren't from Norway, they don't burn churches, and they don't wear corpse paint and cover themselves in animal blood. Plus, their fucking guitarist has glasses. I doubt they're even prescription. Being happy definitely doesn't help matters either. And don't even get me started on playing shows for enjoyment. If you aren't miserable, and your fans aren't equally as or more miserable, then you aren't fucking black metal.

I never considered that it was a typo. Ya, I love Deafheaven too; they're great. I wish I could find more bands like them. :( The closest I could find is a band called Vaura.

Black metal nerds don't even know the roots of the music they listen to. That 2nd wave atmospheric BM sound came about by using guitar techniques from Gothic/Post-Punk bands like Killing Joke, Amebix, etc. So basically, you can thank post-punk "hipsters" in the 80s for European metal heads digging it and incorporating it, otherwise those black metal bands you like would just be death metal bands with evil themes.

I watched this noisey episode so many times over and over when I first learned about deaf heaven and thought I was so cool myself for discovering such a cool band. At the time I must’ve been like 18 or 19 and I was having a lot of good memories, lots of tinder hook ups and I was meeting alot of cool interesting people and just driving around at night alot and listening to this music and I’m rewatching this interview again and I’m getting all that nostalgia come back and I can’t believe how good the human brain is at familiarizing points of your life with things you used to associate yourself with

Genre labeling puts artists in boxes and to be honest I don't give a shit about what genre they are whether it's Blackmetal, Shoegaze, Post-rock, Hardcore, etc. I enjoy their music and they have a unique and yet familiar sound. Why can't we just enjoy the music instead of criticizing them for their looks, genre, not pure enough to be black metal (whatever the fuck that means), too hipster, not hip enough. They seem like humble and down to earth guys who have been through some very emotional and dark times in their lives. Their music is very touching and personal, especially the way Kerry writes and both he and Shiv execute the guitar parts, Daniel's impeccable drumming, Stephen's less is more approach to hold down the fort on bass, and the way George screams with every emotion and pain like he's cycling through memories in his head and his darkest deepest pain to let it all out into the microphone. Incredible band.

I just found out about this band and I find it very interesting. I like the album (Sunbather) and as much as I'm intrigued about how their style is called, I don't really want to label them as something generic. I love the vibe, I enjoy the music. It may be not conventional Black Metal (which I listen to occasionally), but it has the features, with exceptions, obvsiously. This resembles traditional BM a lot more than DSBM in my opinion. Wikipedia also labels them as Shoegaze (which I didn't really know about) and I have listened to some other band labeled so and, honestly, I find a similarity in the general vibe. But again, why is genre so important? Why would it be? Anyway, you've got thumbs up from me! :D

Deafheaven may be progressive to you, but they are by no means evolution for the metal genre, much less the Black Metal genre. There was stuff going on in certain forms of metal as early as the '70s that Deafheaven fans are just now becoming keen to.

They're always so stoic in interviews and all it took was some alcohol and weed to loosen them up! Yes, bands like Envy have done this sound for years but Sunbather is still a great record and Deafheaven has a cool aesthetic. If you only like "metal" when a band wears makeup and burns churches you're coming at music from the wrong angle.

By practicing the proper techniques that help you not damage your voice when screaming. You need to drop your vocal pitch deep into your throat and make sure the vibration happens down there, not near the uvula because that's where things get damaged.
