The first multi-day backpacking trip I took with my wife involved a 9 mile trudge out on the last day. I was shocked by how heavy my pack still felt since it should've been 5 days worth of food lighter. I start unpacking everything that night and find a several somewhat large rocks in my pack that, and I quote, "looked kind of cool" that she "forgot to mention" to me.

Love it! First time I dd that hike around August 2012, it was my very first solo backpack. Night one was spent at campsite SW3 on the ridge. I carried two gallons plus of water up with me because the rangers said I should have a gallon for every day. When I got to the top, it began to rain. Deer wandered in and drank from puddles and double rainbows formed near the overlook. I took two big containers of water and held them upside down and cried tears of joy knowing I would not be carrying them the next day. I danced on the ridge while watching that sunset and howled like a coyote, probably half insane from carrying so much dang water up there during the day. Day two, there was a creek running as I hiked through boot canyon and I realized I could filter water. Day 3, I hiked out and wrote down all of the lessons learned from my first solo trip. Now, being from Texas, I know not every season is the same and the rangers have a duty to tell people to be safe, but gosh almighty, I nearly killed myself trying to carry up 20lbs of water along with all my other first time backpacking gear. Now that I try to go UL, its good to see Dan carry a few of my tears from years long past!

This is a great comment. My first backpacking trip was to the Guadalupe Mountains in TX. Very similar If you have ever been there. No water just like big bend. I carried 60lbs in a pack that maxes out around 40. It hurt so bad. But yet here I am still doing it some 15 years later. I can feel your tears of joy dumping out that water. I’ve backpacked big bend few times. I’ve never seen boot canyon flowing. So I’m jealous of that.

I lived in Texas for two years and drove 12 hours to Big Bend every chance I got. Solo backpacking the South Rim, off-trail to find the Mesa de Anguilla, and following wild burro trails down to the Rio Grande. I have never seen a National Park as beautiful, and I've been to most on the West Coast. Excellent video, especially the moments you took to show the spectacular South Rim views. You know in the Australian army you are required to carry 7l per day of water in dry locations, resupply is based on every 3 days so it’s not uncommon for a grunt to have to Cary your entire pack weight of water alone. I know myself when I did a dry hike in the blue mountains a few years ago I had to carry 12l for three days. Carrying water is part of the deal for a lot of dry hike in aus

Not if he can fly into an airport close to a national park & stay the night before & after at a hotel. I could hardly believe my ears when I heard him say in one of his videos: "I'm flying to a location to go camping." Does he live somewhere that camping & hiking availability is nonexistent? Why not make an adventure of it & drive there if it's worth it? Far less carbon footprint & more memories driving than flying. I've hiked & camped all over North America from Canada to Mexico west of the Mississippi & never once flown to my outdoor destination. I guess I'm just old & don't get it. Isn't it supposed to be about the journey & not the destination? I'll skip this one. All those Smart water bottles. Really? Are they sponsored by Smart water? Get a fecking water bag or proper container. Must all these uber light weight hikers have to insist upon Smart water? Jaysus! They're carrying enough plastic to contaminate the western portion of the Pacific Ocean. Not to mention the stupid cost over tap water. Is common tap water from home not in vogue these days?
@Ihwaz13

@AlkalineGamingHD
@AlkalineGamingHD Год назад
@@Imightberiding I hate the hippy-dippy-ness and yuppie feel a pretentious brand like smart water carries; but truth lies where the truth lies. The bottles have great ergonomics. The main body of the bottle holds it integrity despite being fairly thin walled. They also maintain flexibility unlike hard plastics like nalgene. Finally I like the cap. It has good grip size and has dense plastic to prevent flimsiness at the point of action! The bottles can be reused but there still exists the looming issue of plastic leaching into the water as well as the waste factor in the bottle itself. I've heard hard plastic bottles carry the same footprint as 1000 disposables. Im not sure if this is true but I simply cant find a better alternative when you're looking to carry 4+ liters with relative freedom

During our break at the end of the canyon, I snuck a couple flat rocks into the bottom of my professor’s backpack! The whole class was in on it and thought it was hilarious. Throughout the day, we actually forgot about the rocks. That night, we heard him yelling from his tent after he found the rocks. We had another good laugh about it. I had a tent break in a windstorm at the Badlands National Park. It was a rare and significant storm. Luckily we were at a public campground and could take shelter in my vehicle. As we left the park we rescued some backpackers who had made their way to the road. Now I have a Hillenburg tent, which I have a good deal of faith in. However, it's massive. Question: How strong are these backpacking tents you guys carry? They dont look like much, and that a decent thunderstorm might do significant damage. Yet, I see thru hikers using them all the time. So I'm unsure what direction I'm comfortable with. Thoughts?
@MyLifeOutdoors
@MyLifeOutdoors 2 года назад
So this tent I was using has near vertical walls (to give more headroom) but it catches wind like a sail. I should have guyed it out(I.e. run rope to stages) better but wasn’t expecting the wind we had. It came unexpected in the middle of the night. Other backpacking tents I use have slopping walls that allow wind to blow up and over. They can take much more than it seems. And that’s part of the reason why they cost so much. Lightweight strong material with good design. Dan and Emmett (his camera man) both had tents that shed wind better than this one. They did fine just a few steps from me.
