Great idea! Chris, Have you considered making a replacement for the Vanagon engine vents located behind the rear side windows. Mine are cracked from sun damage and of course they are long out of production.
They are a bit too big for my printers. But my friend Dave at @vanagonlife (www.vanagonlife.com) makes awesome ones with added features like ports for plugging in solar or an external antenna. Check his out! :-)
So odd. I have never had water drip between the awning and the van and I have camped in the rain quite a few times. What mounts are you using? Your mounts must push the awning out further than mine (I use the GoWesty awning brackets).
