In this video I had the opportunity to help a friend diagnose a drivability issue on a 1922 Bentley 3 liter. The vehicle was having issues with the clutch slipping and is misfiring under load at times. Some neat facts about this Bentley is it was equipped with an overhead cam, inline four-cylinder engine. This wonderful machine has four-valves per cylinder, 4-wheel drum brakes, 4 speed transmission and dual magneto distributors. The fuel induction consists of twin SU G5 'Sloper' carburetors. This is an excellent example of an early engineering marvel.

Have I missed something? If it has 2 plugs per cylinder, and each plug fed from separate circuits, and ONE cylinder is not firing, it cannot be a plug or plug lead. But it has 2 carburettors, each feeding different cylinders. So, one carby is running far too rich, and that is causing the apparent misfire. 2 plugs per cyl is normal aircraft practice. On warm-up of a piston engine aircraft, you do a test - operate the engine on one ignition circuit at a time. The RPM should be a stated amount less than the RPM is with both ignition circuits working. This is because with two plugs per cyl, the optimum ignition advance is less. If the RPM drop is greater on one circuit, there is a plug or lead etc problem on the other circuit. If the RPM drop is less than normal, the problem is fuel mixture, timing, or a fault on the circuit cut. Can you not do this test on the Bentley?

That's very cool stuff...Oldest thing I've worked on was a 1927 Chev Tourer...First year for juice brakes I believe for Chev...Quite a large difference in tech with that beauty..Love those old SU's....You coulda just shorted the plug out with a screwdriver Greg...Just sayin' mate...

If some diagnostic equipment was used (sun scope) etc. exhaust gas analyzer you would ind these issues more rapidly

John, ended up that the cam timing was off a tooth. Engine is running great now! Pretty cool OHC 4 valves per cylinder 1922

While it was no technological slouch, I can't agree that the Bentley was ahead of its time. Overhead cams and multi-valve cylinder heads had been well proven in WWI aero engines, while Bugatti engines had both those features from well before that war. In the same year this 3-litre was made, Lancia introduced the Lambda with four-wheel brakes, independent front suspension, front-wheel drive, and unitary construction. That was properly ahead of its time !

Bugatti have nothing to talk about before the war,it wasn't til he copied the Miller?

@@colinmunro7337 The Type 13, first raced in 1910, was SOHC and four valves per cylinder. Miller's designs didn't emerge until later.

It has a mag 1 or 2 that the engine can run off of.

The Bentley is not advanced. It's just we haven't improved much.
