So R70 could do around 250Ks ! Wow! That's pretty much a significant difference. I think now I'm convinced that electric cars are truly efficient, even though I'm still reluctant to accept their emergence.
True, However if you are only driving in the city you can plan when you will have laodshedding. It is when you need to do a road trip with public chargers that is when it causes issues...
In the future electric cars will be used to power the house during outages. We are trialing it in here in the UK as the price of the electricity on some electricity tariffs is variable depending on usage, i.e. time of day. Store the electricity when it is cheap and put it back when it is expensive. On one particular electricity tariff it has been known for the price of the electricity to be a negative value, i.e. when there is lots of sun and wind at the same time.
There are actually 4 levels of regenerative brake. The "B" you used is actually the highest. Pushing the shift stick right and left switch between level 0 to 3. Personally I found level 2 is closest to a petrol car. Absolutely love this car!
Electric cars won't work in SA (and many other countries) until they can become better. Currently the charging times are too long and range too short. For many people in SA, the car they have is the only car they have. The best selling cars are cars like a Picanto, i10, Polo Vivo, Etios, Sandero etc. All those cost less than R200k. No electric car costs so little. People use their Picantos and Vivos and Sanderos for long distance journeys. They use it to take kids to and from school and they use it to take spouse to and from work. They use it for their holidays and longer trips. An electric car costing R200k will have a range of next to nothing. Probably only 200kms at best. So for most of the population it simply won't work or be feasible because then you'd need a second car for everything else. Not everyone has garage parking. Imagine extension cords running out to yards and in complexes and stuff. Charging stations are not close enough together. An affordable electric car wouldn't even make it a quarter of the way to Durban from Joburg for example with people in it and luggage driving at 120kph. At those speeds the range of electric cars plummet whereas a combustion car is more efficient. People in SA also love to tow their trailers and caravans. There's some remote places too. Electric won't work there. Even if used once a year for long journeys, again, for most that one car is their only car. You can't now also pay to rent for an occasion when you do travel. Until an electric car can cost R200k, be charged in 5 mins and have a range of at least 600kms (like a Polo Vivo or Etios or Sandero or i10) on the highway, electric cars are simply not for South Africa and actually for the rest of the world. Not now. For now they will remain a niche product until the above can be met for true mass adoption. The saddest part is that carmakers are discontinuing investment in petrol and diesel vehicles in favour of electric. That means in the future, range and charging speeds become a privelage for those who can afford an expensive electric car versus now where cheap cars have more range and fill up at the same speed as an expensive one. Electric is not ready. And it is a shame that carmakers have to discontinue investment in petrol and diesel.
I really can't wait for the next breakthrough in battery technology. Imagine if you had batteries that are super thin and light but has a much bigger capacity, doesn't explode or catch on fire, charges quickly and has a long life. Everything will change again. From laptops and cell phones to vehicles and wearables. Realistically though, proper implementation of future tech like the solid-state battery is still a decade away. But I did see that the new Mi 10 Ultra can 120w fast charge. That is 50% battery charge in 12 mins because of graphene. Crazy stuff.
I understand the cost calculation confirming that electricity is much cheaper than petrol, but you need to take into account the price of the vehicle it self. Electric cars are way more expensive than the comparable petrol cars and more of the than not you can buy 4-5 years of petrol before breaking even(i3 for example). Until electric cars becomes cheaper in SA, it would not make sense owning one to save money.
I got my e-golf in april of this year. Compared to my ICE car the golf saves me around 200 euro a month which is 2400 euro a year. I don't have to spend money on oil and since i use the regeneration feature quite a bit brakes are hardly used which again saves cost. You are right that the break even point is around 4-5 years but after that it quickly becomes way WAY cheaper than an ICE car. So your conclusion is incorrect. Most people who buy a new car drive it longer than 4 years, so for most people it is cheaper and you seem to disregard that group because you probably buy a new car every 1 or 2 years and even in that case it's still cheaper because you disregard the trade in value which is much more steady on EV's at the moment. This means you have lost more value when you trade in that first ICE car compared to that first EV. It's not a simple as you make it out to be in just taking the difference in price and seeing how much petrol you can buy for it. There's a lot more costs to a car than that and in the end you will always be cheaper with an EV. Yes they're expensive to buy but they're well worth the investment and even more if you have your house fitted with solar panels. Pretty much eery country has grants for EV's these days so in most countries it gets even cheaper.
@@Eric-lx8hp They don't offer subsidies in SA. Also, the electric golf has way less range than a diesel one. If the golf is someone's only car, they now can't take on long journeys and have to worry about charging all the time. Electric is not there yet.
What you’re not talking about is the lack of charging areas in this country and if you’re wanting to do road trips it won’t be as easy as putting in petrol. As well as the cost of installing one of those charge points in your house. These I feel are important details you’ve left out
People complaining about load shedding like it’s some 18-hour long daily routine when in actuality it barely exceeds 4 hours, worst case scenario...As if manufacturers aren’t bringing out longer ranges, faster charging times and private businesses rolling out more charging points locally. From a price point, can understand but it’ll be a matter of time until the government (eventually) incentivizes EV’s here and we assemble some for our market...
We really can’t wait for the EVs to be adapted in SA. For those seemingly ignorant ones who say that Loadshedding will be an issue, just think for a bit. How often are you expected to charge this car? Definitely not everyday! You are also not loadshed for 24 hrs are you🤷🏽♂️. Surely that cannot be a problem in anyone who wants to own an EV. Loadshedding is merely just a silly (and probably an emotional) excuse to not adapting to EVs.
spot on, Ive been driving EVs since 2015, never ever has a load shedding problem, I now even have solar to charge my car during the day when the sun is really hot. Remember 95% of the time we do city driving(no need for a massive battery like a ipace) and for the very long trips I use an old SUV, or just rent one or better stiff, just fly and rent a cheap car when you get to your destination.
VW Golf the template of every car manufacturer. They probably tell their engineers "make quiet like a Golf, spacious like a Golf, comfortable like a Golf" it's not a striking car but it won't offend you. Everything is just straightforward no nonsense.
From the comments it seems that South Africans are very confused about electric cars..... which is why it's good for VW to expose them to these models. Same like a cellphone your car can be charged overnight Few people drive 150km+ a day - fuel cost would be ridiculous so range isn't an issue to most How often do u drive to from Durban to Johannesburg? Car hire will become more of a thing. Electric cars don't need oil changes so u save on those servicing costs.
I don't think they are confuse I believe they would not b cheap maybe this golf would be around a 750 000 to a million and that not cheap. I will be affordable to high earners and rich people. 2nd thing few charging points sol long distance you have to high a car or have a second car(that why im saying for rich and high earners) 3rd we dont know how long these 🔋 gona last after maintanance plan som people they dont afford to charge cars every 5years. Fixing them if they break is it going to be easy even if parts break I don't think they will be cheap. Anyway i like these electric cars i wolud love to own one.
I just had a major service on my i3 which included looking at the brakes, (which I hardly use because of regen) microfilmer for my air con and a nice car wash, next service in about 24 months....
I am using this car for half a year now. You can only use 50% of the range of what VW promises. Be aware! Only during very hot weather the range is "ok" not even good. In the winter the range loses another 25 up to 50%. Besides the range the car is perfect.
It makes no difference whether there's an engine there or not. Crumple zones were designed in cars with engines where the engine becomes a structural part of that crumple zone. Makes no difference.
I am a not a big fan or electric cars and especially here in South Africa: 1. Eskom is still a big issue. Imagine waking up to go to work and your precious car is at 7% battery because there was load shedding the night before 2. Where does the power come from? its still not a green solution to the issue of global warming 3. We travel some serious distances in SA and not always to places with chargers. Can you imagine driving one of these from Pretoria to Ventersdorp then you must charge it before you come back and it was only a 20 minute meeting. 4. They are not cheap. These are currently for the elite who can already afford other nice cars and to be honest, they don't really care about the fuel savings they get as opposed to the 'average' man
Consumers in SA need more safety than electric cars, i mean each and every 3 minutes a car is stolen in SA i'm talking about expensive cars so they should be planning on way forward than just electric car. and these new cars are even more easier to steal than old cars.
3 things that I would be thinking very hard about... 1. What is the duty-cycle/design lifespan of the battery packs in the vehicle - and when they wear out, how much does it cost to service/replace? How does that factor into the cost per KwH? 2. With Eskom being in the state it's currently in being barely able to provide power on a day-to-day basis, what's going to happen if there is suddenly a boom in the electric car industry? The strain on the grid would definitely collapse it. 3. Let's say your household has 1 car, it's an electric car. Let's say it's flat and requires recharging and you suddenly have an emergency - you're going to go where how? Bicycle? Walk? Hopes and prayers?
Would be great if Cars.co.za could start building up relationships with branded dealerships to obtain some form of discount similar to carwow.co.uk with their app. When buying through you guys. 100% supporter of EV’s. Monitoring them around the world. Would really be great if the Government could get involved by offering grants for “green purchases” too i.e solar and EV’s. Solar can also give back to the grid if over produced which could also provide relief to our infrastructure. Really hope our EV options will become cheaper in SA and grow in the market. It’s the only way forward to contribute to our current climate crisis. Thank you for the great review.
I didn't have interest in Electric cars but this one ticks all the boxes for me especially when Ciro said you can do 250 km with R70. 00 this one is for us cheapskates 🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺💃💃💃💃💃💃
I was about to say they should have brought the iD, I am very interested in it. The issue with this golf is that it just a mere modification of a ICE golf so it’s underpinnings are that of an internal combustion engine vehicle, whereas the iD was designed from scratch as an electric vehicle, obviously making it more solid electric car than this golf
But this one is available and the ID3 isn't and not for quite a while because of the issues they have with getting it to work. Then even when it gets released it still won't have the different variants for quite a while sine they will only be producing the mid range version. So until all versions of the ID3 are actually available it doesn't really make sense to talk about it. Unfortunately because all of this the ID3 is quickly becoming the joke of EV's because of the huge amount of issues with it's launch. Saying a discounted product has no use in a market where the most stated problem is the cost of the cars is just ridiculous in my opinion. Not everyone has huge amounts of money to spend and for some people this is a very good car to enter the world of EV's built on a proven platform.
@@TheGalantir Golf 8 is launching on the 3rd quarter of 2020 and possibly reach our stores in March 2021. 2ndly people looking for EV are very specific in what to purchase. One of the things we EV enthusiasts look for is the internal space and two boots "frunk" and that is not even offering that. Even Mercedes EQC is highly criticised simply because it's a GLC. The review is brilliant for research purchases (not potential EV clients)
@Neo Moselane Basically what you are saying is that people who buy second hands cars don't count. and your way of thinking is the only way people should think. Seeing this e-golf is no longer being produced and hasn't been available in SA pretty much the only way to get it is second hand imports which in quite a few cases is much cheaper then buying a brand new ID3 which isn't even released and will have issues upon release with no ETA on when it will be fixed. Like i said before it will also not be available in it's cheapest edition for quite some time., which means for many many people the ID3 is not an option. I'm not saying not to show the ID3 but calling it a waste to show this one is disregarding more than 70% of the people who buy cars. Not every EV enthusiast is all about frunks like you are, you are projecting your own personal preference onto everyone. So yes this is eevn a good review for potential EV clients, just not EV clients like you.
We are ready and waiting for an electric car that is semi-affordable (< R400k). As a family will, probably hang onto a dinosaur juice powered car for longer trips for now but makes a lot of sense having the 2nd car an electric car for most daily trips.
@@SDav21 If we are talking about SA on then most people do not have a car at all and catch a taxi to work.. In my experience, in the cities most families have two cars. Even if it is skadonks :)
Thanks my man for this. But what is the practicality of using an electric car in South Africa, in Durban, Cape Town or JhB? would charging be a hustle and other servicing needs of the car?
Pottering around Bedfordview in a car like that makes sense, there's hundreds of robots to get Regen from but the infrastructure is Probably 5+ years out. I know Jag is doing that large project but the Initial outlay on any electric vehicle here is MAD. Overseas they'll get money back, we won't. If pricing is off it stands no chance (ID3).It doesn't stand a hope in hell if it's a hundred thousand more than the equivalent sized petrol/diesel vehicle.(factor in that the average person would finance these vehicles) You would be able to spend the equivalent saved cash on fuel, lets say R1500 per month on the low side. How will the second hand market look a old batteries...
For SA we just need hybrid cars. That way if for obvious reasons the battery isnt charged then you can still use your vehicle. Car makers start introducing more hybrid cars first.
What pleasantly surprised me most about an electric ⚡️ car 🚙 is enjoying the peace and quiet of driving, it’s a lot more relaxing 🤷🏻♂️ Someone told me the B is because the German word for the terminology of regeneration begins with a B but I can’t rememberer what that word is. The other huge convenience if you have at home charging is avoiding the hassle of petrol stations ⛽️ even with only the plug in Hybrid GTE to base as reference over covid lock down and only doing around town driving the last time I went to a fuel ⛽️ station was back in January, driveway charging is simply bliss
They should try us on electric vehicles. It's just a shame there aren't enough charging points on the freeways of S.A. I think these as cities cars are such a fun economical choice
50-100km less range would be the difference. Keep in mind that turning on your air condition only can already cost you as much as 30km range. i know i own one.
@@TheGalantir Im talkin about looks and street cred. Modding the car ,im not taking about range at all! Im saying car has potensial for mods! Making it something the petrol heads wil look at and say they have a good point here with electric!
@SuperMj70 Well there's just as much potential as with the normal golf. I'm not sure it's going to get you any street cred though since it might look good but it pretty much won't go anywhere since you'll have no range. So basically it becomes a good looking ornament.
@@TheGalantir the car has a 12v battery same as any normal car. Adding another deep cycle battery im sure wont affect the range itself if done properly but stil if building a show car range is not the issue.
@@SuperMj70 @SuperMj70 Nvm i see where the misunderstanding lies. Over here street cred means street cred not show cred. Shows are something different. So you're not going to race it i presume. Because when you want to race it you have to rebuild the entire drive train since the default one is just not capable i know i own an e-golf. So you're better of getting the ICE version and just do a conversion, that way you can spend the price difference on converting it. If you're just going to use it at shows, there' no real point in getting the electric version and again you can spend the price difference on the car. So the only reason i can think of to do it in either case is because you just want to say it is an EV, that is quite a bit of extra money just to be able to say that for a car that would end up having no performance and range at all. But hey if that's your thing i'm all for it, don't get me wrong on that part. I just think it's an expensive way to go about it.
Yes I agree electric cars will always be more efficient than petrol But South Africa doesnt have the accessibly of electric charging ports So we will just have to wait
@@factorseries But the cars that can have a decent range cost a million. People use Sanderos and Vivos to drive so far. No electric car costing that can do the same journey. Add passengers and luggage and maybe a trailer and at 120kph the range will be more like 150kms. Electric cars range is awful on the highway. Plummets.
at home at 1A 15 hours. 11A 4-5 hours. quick charge at 50kw takes about 45 minutes. I have not yet experienced any problems with charging it. I just plug it in at home during the night and at work during the day.
@@SDav21 Not sure what that has to do with the answer i gave to the posted question and why i should even give you that information. If you are trying to start an argument this way like always happens in youtube comments you got the wrong guy since i'm not going to give you that satisfaction.
@@TheGalantir LOL. What a way to jump to conclusions. This is why no one talks to electric car owners. Everyone is out to attack you right? Whatever dude. Forget I asked.
@@SDav21Like i said you are just out for an argument which is clear since charging rate does not depend on where you live but the given kw/h on the charger. IT also has nothing to do with owning one or more cars. And it even doesn't depend on you finding it an issue. So your comment was extremely pointless and the only reason to comment like that is to try to start an argument. If not explain what owning more cars has to do with charging rate. What has living anywhere have to do with charging rate? What has you finding it an issue have to do with charging rate?
@@louishenn3028 family works at Volkswagen head office - however, I've heard you can request a test drive at the dealerships that have the cars (Rivonia in JHB) 6 cars in SA at the moment
The VW ID 3 is coming up soon, a complete new electric vehicle platform. So better wait. VW will bring 20+ Electric Models on the market within this decade.
IF they manage to bring it to market. Unfortunately they seem to have quite some issues and the car is quickly becoming the joke of the EV world unfortunately. Even if it comes to market only the mid range version will be available for the first period so i would not expect to see a basic version being sold until late 2021 or even early 2022.
@Fabian Schorer Yes because it's cheaper to do the needed updates when it's in their home country where they're built since they will not have all features and will still have software issues. At least this way the cars are going out since otherwise they would have to delay again which is why most people are upset in the first place who ordered one. Not sure they will be happy they will get one that has issues but that's what VW decided to do.
There are efficiency losses when charging a battery. You need to check the power meter on your municipal supply and you will see it takes more than 35kW to charge a 35kW battery until it is full to 35kW capacity. Or, by charging it with a petrol generator will indicate the huge losses every time energy is converted from one form to the other. Fuel, coal to electricity and electricity into battery (chemical) potential.
There's more ergonomic amenities in an old el cheapo airline seat than a modern car! All you still really get in a car is a seat and a cup holder.. wow. Give me a secure place to put my phone where it will charge and be visible with both Android and Apple connectivity, my large coffee where it wont block vents and switches, my ham sandwich from the fuel station and an actual bin for the sandwich wrapper.. Forget all the gadget crap that's only going to fail eventually.. I don't care for pedestrian alert assist and radar braking and reverse cameras and 35 way heated seats and headrest tvs and climate controlled pollen filters.. Just give me a usable space to live, surely it can't be that hard..
It's not cheaper. The reason electric cars are expensive to buy is 57% of the cost comes from the batteries so if you saving now when it's time to replace the batteries you going to cry
Exactly, I find it strange that this thing that’s been on roads elsewhere for close to 10 years makes an appearance in ZAR now all of a sudden. As usual these auto manufacturers are not taking us seriously with the stuff that bring here.
There's other available but they will cost you range as these are special low friction tires and the hub design for aero dynamic purposes to get the best range..
