It's a 4 hour drive from Greymouth to Nelson. You will drive through the famous Great Coast Road along the west coast of New Zealand. It's a raining day. I did not go through Westport and drove directly to Nelson Tasman. The road condition is quite good and well maintained.
Greymouth is a town with a history of jade hunting, gold mining and dramatic river floods. Sample the beer and listen to wild west coast stories. Greymouth is considered the heart of the West Coast. It is the largest town on the South Island’s west coast with an estimated population of 8,340 as of June 2023.
Nelson is a New Zealand city on the eastern shores of Tasman Bay at the top of the South Island. It is the oldest city in the South Island and the second-oldest settled city in New Zealand; it is centre of New Zealand geographically. It was established in 1841 and became a city by royal charter in 1858. Nelson City's total population was 55,600 in 2023, up 1.1% from a year earlier.
