Drive Through the Welsh Mountains with Me

This is a little different to my usual videos, let's call it "Slow TV".
I'm home in Wales for a short winter break, and I wanted to share just a little of my homeland with you all, so join me on a gentle drive up the Conwy Valley, through Betws y Coed and Llanrwst, up Dyffryn Mymbyr, down Nant Gwynant, and through the legendary and beautiful little village of Beddgelert. Almost all of this is in the ancient kingdom of Gwynedd or in the magnificent Eryri National Park (formerly known as Snowdonia as an official name, the National Park now no longer uses an English official name). We'll drive through a landscape that has hillforts, Roman fortresses, castles, oak forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls galore hidden in it.
It may not be a takedown of an inaccurate Viking Age TV show or an Arthurian film of questionable quality, but it is pretty!
So, I hope that if you're celebrating a holiday you have a good one, and that this little trip through the Welsh Highlands is a pleasant one for you!
PS. This video was set to come out whilst I'm away, so if you've joined the Patreon very recently and don't see your name, you will on the next video! :)
PPS. It's filmed by hand, I do not have a gimbal/tripod for my car, so forgive any shake!

I’m down south caring for my parents, it’s been two years now since I’ve been able to set foot in the Welsh hills and watching this has tugged at my heart strings and had me shedding a tear or two for the beautiful countryside and the many breakfasts I’ve had in the Moel Siabod cafe. Thank you Jimmy.

That is a trip down memory lane! I I used to travel up and down the A5 multiple times every year for years! And even more when I lived in Holyhead. North Wales is just so gloriously beautiful - it's wonderful to do that trip with you, Jimmy, and I will definitely watch it again! I love North Wales!

Sometimes, especially in these parts of Wales, I sometimes do wonder.... Aside from the types of cars you see on the road, I wonder how different (or rather how similar) the views would be in some of these places if we wound back the clock twenty, fifty, or even a hundred years ago. While Jimmy didn't pass through it, there's a town called Corris where I've seen side-by-side shots comparing parts of it today and a hundred years ago and they were virtually identical; from the buildings and you could even see the exact same trees in some shots!

I've been to Corris quite a lot over the last few years. I've not seen the old photos but it's a beautiful little place, the cafe is very lively with great food and each time I've been plenty of friendly dogs too. Driving bout out is a little bit tense though

That was a delight, thank you Jimmy! Just the palate cleanser I needed. I went to France to visit family, flying out just before Christmas in one storm, flying home yesterday into the bumpy embrace of Storm Gerrit. I'm guessing this was filmed somewhere in between, given the wind and high waters! Thank you for the work you do here on your channel. I hope your coming year is peaceful and content-y (in the emotional sense, not the social media one) 💜

My husband and I went to Wales this past Sept sparked by his desire to go to Beddgelert, the town where Alfred Bestall, author and illustrator of the Rupert the Bear books lived a number of years. The lush surrounding were an inspiration for many of his beautiful illustrations. So lovely to see these roads and Beddgelert again. Thankyou.

Not sure if you got to go to Cape Breton when you were in Nova Scotia, but this is a bit reminiscent of there ! Though a definite lack of signs ! Though a bit tacky, I do enjoy a handpainted sign extolling the virtues of a restaurant a few kilometers up the road, lol ! I spent a few weeks every summer there when I was a kid, and I have not been back in too long ! Halifax is a great city, but, Cape Breton is "home". Happy New Year, Jimmy ! Thanks for showing us Wales. Will add to my "bucket list" !

Lovely. The "it was wimdy" made me laugh. I just came back to the states from Ireland. It was extremely windy there too. I almost got blown sideways one day. I learnt to swim in Llyn Dinas, damed the Glaslyn, lost many a flip flop in the rivers in Beddgelert, and wore out many a cagoule from Warws. In fact you drive past Ty Wyn, the cottage I spent many a year in just outside Beddgelert (now a holiday cottage opposite the rare breeds farm). I have a tattoo of Yr Wyddfa on the inside of my right upper arm, from a photo I took. Thank you for taking my soul home ❤️

I do love this. I would also love to see this in other seasons. I understand that may not be easy given your work schedule. Although being behind that bloody caravan with the smiley face would have driven me to HEAVy drinking.

Being used to driving on the right (!) side of the road, this gave me a serious case of nervous tension at every bend of the road. Reasoning that Jimmy had edited this, he must have survived without serious harm… 😅 The landscape is beautifull, the music fitting … getting homesick for an area, a land I‘ve never known. Thanks a lot Jimmy and all the best for a new year, with new adventures and hopefully much happiness 💫💫

Thank you so much for sharing your drive home with us! It's so fascinating to see the everyday beauty of other places. I'm amazed at the amount of stonework everywhere! I'm in the midwest US, where stonework is often conspicuous consumption in fancier neighborhoods, if it's there at all. I can't imagine the labor needed to build all of those. It's remarkable. Parts of the landscape, the little wooded valleys opening up to green pastures, remind me strongly of where I grew up in the Ozark Plateau, but then you shift to Rohan! A remarkable diversity of landscapes. And the towns are so close to the road! Here every building has a 'hell strip' of useless mowed grass, then sidewalk, then more useless mowed grass, then the sidewalk around the building. While I worry a bit about car-building collisions, I'm also impressed by the economy of space. This was a really lovely way to spend my breakfast. Thank you.

Absolutely gorgeous views! We sure don't get anything like it over here (except maybe in the very south) in the Netherlands. It's also confirmation that it might not be wise for me to visit Wales because I would get *horrifically* carsick on some of those roads. Little me being driven through the French mountains every summer vacation taught me that much at least

It's so easy to see how Wales and the Appalachians are all cut from the same mountain range. Minus the styles/ages of buildings and side of the road you're driving on, it's just like driving through the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. More lakes instead of rivers, but damn. If you are ever in Massachusetts and have the spare time, take Route 9 from say Northampton to Pittsfield and I think once you get out of the city you'll feel right at home. Absolutely gorgeous!!!

8:54 - funny you should call it Rohan, given the Anglo-Saxon coding of the Rohirrim, in my mind the men of Dunland (their neighbours who in the distant past they displaced from the land that became Rohan) are coded Welsh, even though as far as I can recall there’s nothing in the text to overtly imply this.
@mostlyholy6301
@mostlyholy6301 9 месяцев назад
Not in the text, but the Welsh character of the Dunlendings is made explicit in some of his letters. Apparently, at one time they lived from Bree down to Rohan, which is why the Men of Bree and Hobbits of Buckland have Welsh-inspired names, eg Barliman Butterbur and Meriadoc.
