We are trying an entirely new template for reviews. This will let us dig deeper into the movies and keep me from talking over Maple and Arianna as much lol. So this Review is going to be the test one and will take a bit longer to edit. hopefully this process will be streamlined in the future.
Nicolas Winding Refn only have one good movie under his belt, whiles all of Alfonso Cuarón movie are awesome, you should do children of men next, that masterpeace dont get recommended enough
Some people were expecting the Fast and the Furious and were very disappointed they didn’t get it. I was expecting the Fast and the Furious and was very pleased I didn’t get it.
Same here. My girlfriend was working at a movie theater and convinced me to see it, thankfully. One of my favorite movies now. The tense as hell opening scene leading into pink neon font and Nightcall playing let me know I wasn’t watching a dumb action movie.
Same. I was going to skip it because of the trailers until the early reviews poured in and said how much different (and better) it was from the marketing.
One of the most beautifully made films made in over a decade. An art film disguised as a genre flick that was as unexpected for audiences when it first came out as it was for you.
Yeah I always thought of it as a European art film crossed with an American crime drama. I think a lot of people were expecting a standard car chase movie and that's why this movie was overlooked.
The awkwardness of their first scenes works perfectly. Their chemistry is so obvious and the film makes you feel uncomfortable because it's like you're intruding on those very personal and private moments. I also just love a film that takes it's time and doesn't rush things. I need to soak up the atmosphere, the location, the sounds and get to know the people involved; even if they don't give much away.
So much of the movie is about Gossling hiding his true nature from Irene and her son. ------- When it's time to come forth it comes out with a vengeance. ------- I loved the goodbye kiss he gives her in the elevator before he shows the part of himself he has been hiding. -------- The scorpion jacket gives a hint as to his true nature. Silent and unassuming until it's time to unleash a deadly strike. -------- Not to mention the Killer soundtrack. I stream it constantly after watching this movie. Love it!
because of his certain set of skills and the scorpion connection I always figured our Driver is former special forces. in that world and around this timeframe a scorpion tattoo also represented combat deployment to the "sandbox".
@@mokane86 I always kind of thought the scorpion was symbolism for the Scorpion and the Frog, you know- the scorpion stinging the frog because its in its nature?
@@Nocturnewashere in its symbolic role i think that is smart, but idk if i buy that as the reason why the character purchased and enjoys the jacket. Could be all though 🤷♂️
@@Nocturnewashere yeah, I think you are right about the jacket. This movie wears its’ symbolism on its sleeve. The driver’s inner turmoil is all about fighting his nature. You can tell he’s worried that he isn’t capable (or deserving?) of a better life. The scene with him watching cartoons with Benecio spells it out really well. He’s the shark, desperately clinging to the hope that he could be the good guy.
Very rare to find a film that’s a complete package where every little element fits in seamlessly from the very beginning to the ambiguous ending. The film’s overall atmosphere, aesthetic, and mystique-from the music, typography, long pauses, sparse dialogue, tender moments and brutal violence-coalesced into a cinematic experience that’s truly memorable and bittersweet. It’s an experience you can’t resist revisiting over and over again. 😊
I love how Driver’s demeanor changes when it’s a matter of someone he cares about. Every other situation he’s cold blooded and hard boiled, but when it’s Irene, he looks like a scared little boy. When he brings her the news of what happened to Standard and after stomping the hitman to death, this steely eyed gangster gets this submissive look on him that is reminiscent of a child knowing that he disappointed his parents. Really phenomenal character acting.
I remember getting cold chills when he put on his gloves and locked the apartment with him and Blanche inside. That was the moment I realized how dangerous he truly was. And that was before he took out the hitmen with ease.
You mean the the song that kickstarted a genre revival? Retrowave/synthwave/outrun were super fringe and more like memes before this movie. This movie got some recognition and suddenly new artists with a similiar style started popping out like mushrooms after the rain.
@@fernandohinojosa3211 I've been In hospital for two months doing therapy because I can't handle silence in conversations... You're right, it shouldn't be cringe but some people have a hard time dealing with it. This is still my favorite movie.
@@MrWillsonx It's cringe because shy/introverted people can at least bring themselves to offer the minimum required information when they're forced into human interactions, so if you meet someone THIS quiet they're either suffering from crippling social anxiety or they're about to murder you. It's perfectly understandable to find that uncomfortable to watch.
In my opinion this tiny masterpiece is what made me realise that Mr. Gosling could do more than look good. The whole film is a testament to the vision of the film maker and the talent of the assembled cast. Not since Max Ophuls, excuse the absent umlaut, has a film's lighting, visuals and cinematography combined to produce such a beautiful yet desolate image. The look on Gosling's face as she runs from the elevator beatdown is the death of hope and the end of innocence, and end he blames himself for...I have seen this film more than 10 times and each viewing is a revelation, like a good Beatles song it reveals more each time you encounter it. I dislike hyperbole, but this is a work of near genius. I enjoy watching your responses Miss, and shall keep watching.
Downsides of being single: some movies are really meant to be shared. Benefits of being single: most likely nobody gets their skull kicked in during an elevator ride.
@@muzikkification Well that's hysterical. The last movie I saw alone in a theater was "Murder by Numbers" starring a then unknown... Ryan Gosling. Also starring a slightly more well-known Sandra Bullock.
Ryan Gossling does a lot of great acting without saying much dialogue. -------- It reprises the great spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood does the same thing by doing a lot without saying much. ------- The acting is great. Everyone's in a trance. -------- The movie lulls you to sleep with its relaxed nature and then shocks you with it's intense action and extreme gory violence. -------- What a great contracts throughout the movie.
I use it to have unspoken conversations with people. I could learn a lot about someone from four minutes of silence than I probably would in two hours of constant conversation
I genuinely like the chemistry. While I know it seems unrealistic with people being able to spark a relationship with very few words like that, a part of me also wishes constant talking wasn't so necessary in real life. Imagine just being able to enjoy each others presence like that and not feeling uncomfortable with some silence. One of my fav movies of all time.
Has Maple or Ariana ever seen The Place Beyond the Pines? I would love to see them react to that one. Make sure you tell Maple that Gosling is in it lol and Bradley Cooper.
Drive, No Country For Old Men, Gone Baby Gone, Law Abiding Citizen and a host of other films remind me of how effective the medium can be in the right hands. Remember the story about the scorpion and the toad? Goslings' character is basically, in my opinion, the scorpion, and everyone else unsure or his true nature! Reminds me of Joey in A History Of Violence. 😂😂😂 Ladies! Ladies! I think you gotta go through Eva Mendes to get to Ryan! 😂😂😂
I think saying the Driver is the scorpion is too simplistic for this film. You may be unsure of his nature, but you are not unsure of a scorpion's nature. Would you pet a scorpion? Kiss it, cuddle it, or sleep with it like you would your cat or dog? The answer is no, because you know it's nature. It can sting or pinch you at any time and for no reason. I know not all scorpions are deadly poisonous, but its toxicity level doesn't change its nature. The scorpion is on the Driver's jacket, literally on his back. Just like the story of the scorpion and the frog. Perhaps he is the frog, or perhaps he is both. I don't know the right answer. I guess the director is the one to ask.
Fun fact: Ryan is in the Goosebumps episode "say cheese and die" as a kid. He's super talkative in that. As an adult, he doesn't talk much in the movies he's in. Super crazy transformation to see if you ever decide to watch that episode
I love this movie so much. It takes its time and, even though the dialogue doesn't explain everything, the story gets its point across. The moment the movie hit the hardest was when the Driver locked the door and put on his gloves while facing Blanche. And when he killed for the first time in front of us, after for so long, he seemed like the unassuming and shy, but competent type. "The Scorpion and the Frog"motif is clear. Its in his nature and at the end, he has to reveal that nature to save Irene. The kiss is his goodbye. Her trying to find him in the end at his apartment was heartbreaking though. Even though she saw who he was and ran, she still loved him. And he didn't know.
This film is definitely a roller coaster. feels like a calm before the storm. in regards to the elevator and hotel scenes. felt like Tarantino took over for a bit. great film and love the soundtrack
This movie is great in that it lets the viewer try to figure out things for themselves instead of force-feeding it to them. That's something that is sadly lacking in most current films.
The dog coming up to comfort you is teh best thing ever. This movie is still a banger. Gosling and play stillness so well but teh explosive rages were like a horror movie. It also has more tension that most horror movies, it reminds me a bit of No Country for Old Men in that way.
I love how you go from "no one says anything" in the beginning to "no, no more talking!" at 32:20....Shows how effective this film is at communicating the discomfort/intensity intended.
No I’m generally not! I actually really enjoy intentional silence and often times practice not speaking at all each day even usually in the mornings when I wake up 😅 but this movie does silence is way that was just different. He’s being spoken to and practically not interacting vocally at all.
I mean wouldn’t say it’s because I’m American I just have a crippling anxiety disorder 👈🏻😗👉🏻 *finger guns* But actually in the discussion video we are setting up - its cool and artful the lack of dialogue. It shows how much can be unspoken yet understood. As well as the level in which they just simply got each other.
Great film! I love that everybody just vibes to the soundtrack, it really hits the spot. Don't know how Driver's front headlights were still shining when Nino was rammed off the road, but there we go haha. Autumn is some dog too!!
After going back and checking out the Gladiator review on your channel I started thinking about my favorite scenes in my favorite movies and this movie immediately jumped into my head. I had to come back here and see this again. I watch a lot of movies, it's kind of my thing. If I were asked what my favorite movie of the 2010s is, my answer would be Drive.
Great reaction love the movie myself, the book goes into a lot more detail great read as well. Got to say I loved your dog she was so sweet, like she could sense you were tense so every now and again hey you okay?😂❤️❤️❤️❤️ Just so loving. Keep up your great work. Cheers.
Our culture has become too... I'm not sure if 'Civilized' is the right word, perhaps, 'Pacified' is better, to really understand what kind of a man The Driver is. Nearly 100 years ago, C.S. Lewis described him perfectly- “The knight is a man of blood and iron, a man familiar with the sight of smashed faces and the ragged stumps of lopped-off limbs; he is also a demure, almost a maidenlike, guest in hall, a gentle, modest, unobtrusive man. He is not a compromise or happy mean between ferocity and meekness; he is fierce to the nth and meek to the nth.” ― C.S. Lewis
Man this bald guy does does not have any luck does Bruce Lee gets his hand broken then he gets his throat stabbed you got me pretty yes be pretty unlucky have that happen
@@rjb204 unfortunately I took a literature arts class in high school where we read the book and watched the movie and spent an entire semester on doing an analysis of the work 🥺 both are very good tho!!
you gotta be real careful with this director if you feel things. he likes to give you something beautiful and intriguing and unique and then leave you feeling gross and empty and horrified. kinda got to take or leave it, the films are amazing.
'Only God Forgives' is very similar to this film, and made by the same director, and also starring Ryan Gosling. If you like this, you might like that film too. 40:06 That makes a lot of sense, stab'em more than they stab you. Pretty funny too.
Really looking forward to watching this reaction. 😊 I've seen this movie only a couple of times. And really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
can you just accept that this movie isn't filled with dialogue? why does it make you so anxious? you're making ME anxious with all this unnecessary anxiety...
Some people aren’t good at letting their inner dialogue take over in those times, so they tune out. Since she’s kind of stuck watching this, she couldn’t really tune out, which probably made her anxious. I love quiet movies like this. Nicholas Winding Refn does a great job at these kind of films, Valhalla Rising is probably his most ‘still’ movie. Terrence Malick is another director who uses a lot of quiet & nature in his films & he makes some good ones.
You have to understand that this is an arthouse movie, most people don't watch this kind of movies that tend to have slower rhythms and very little dialogue. It is a matter of habit, nothing more. Until now she has only seen blockbusters and a bit of american auteur cinema, it is normal that it seems strange to her.
I remember nothing of Oscar Issac in "All About the Benjamins" (so I count this as the first movie I've seen him in although not really) but when I saw him in this his character immediately stood out to me. The way Oscar played him against type was sublime. Also I know Gosling plays a lot of characters that don't speak very much but as Maple notes in many scenes so much is being said without needing to say it (the elevator scene was incredible).
You can work on a car. The reason most people don't is because they're too intimidated. It's just wrenching parts off, wrenching parts on. Ain't no thang. Esp nowadays with RU-vid videos about how to do everything for every car out there, it's never been easier to do stuff on a car than ever before.
Drive is the first in the Neon Trilogy, along with Only God Forgives, and Neon Demon. I rather enjoy Refn’s films, especially Valhalla Rising, but the violence, especially in Valhalla Rising, is quite brutal.
Whenever I have a bad experience with a happy stupid person I think of the scores of them who gave this movie bad reviews because they thought it was going to be like fast and the furious. Drive is a masterpiece - glad you finally saw it last year
Just an observation, as a Long haul truck driver I'm very comfortable with silences and being alone.. it's funny how uncomfortable that makes some people. Like .. if they're not saying something every minute they feel it's awkward, for heaven forbid there's no background noise or music blaring.. I think if you're comfortable with yourself or comfortable with the people you're with the quiet is just fine. If you never feel that way maybe you should do some introspection. 🤔
I just saw this movie a week or two ago because of the memes, was hopping to find a Fast and Furious like movie, not just it is not Fast and Furious but i wasn't desapointed at all.
I kinda cracked up laughing when thay had that sweet moment in the car and then “God I’m single”. I felt it with you too but comedic timing was perfect
Life's funny, the lonely and depressed seem to gravitate towards each other, they kinda find some solace together. Alas, he knew they could never be together once she saw the real him
Loving your reactions to this and fight club, definitely have to check out memento. *edit* 25:30 awwwwww your puppy!!!!!!!!!!!! Just like my dachshund he always comes over to check on me in a movie moment like that😁
Gosling says in videos about this movie that if there isn't a lot of dialogue it lets the viewer decide what the character is saying. All he does is driver and he says he never carries a gun. I have no problem with killing he bad guys, but there is too much blood and body parts flying around. I do not like the director, in the moment on filming the director decided to make the elevator scene as gruesome as possible. He does that a lot.
