Original F1 came in silver love this car in any shade of silver with contrasting black vents. Love black but u loose to many of those beautiful lines on this design.
Nice review. Couple minor points - there are indeed storage compartments in the doors (they auto lock when the doors are raised) and the stereo is Bowers & Wilkins (not Harmon Kardon). It's an amazing car and worth every penny!
That's not the only gaff. You said it doesnt have storage pockets in the doors, even giving the reason why, but it does have storage in the doors. It locks access to it when the doors are open to stop the contents spilling out.
There are 2 magnetic lock compartment in each door for storage. The sound system is B&W not HK. Storage in the front trunk is definitely decent I know these facts as I purchased one 3 months ago. Lastly, there is 0 to 60 in the real world is between 2.3 and 2.5, the 1/4 mile Time in the real world varies between 9.5 and 9.75, I dino test has revealed through the RA horsepower to be approximately 800, with nearly 720 directly on the axle after losing some percentage in the engine to transmission to axle. So far, I have not run into a single Ferrari or Lamborghini or a Porsche Nick in touch this thing in any levels of performance, when it comes to cornering all at handling and breaking with absolutely rapid chef responses the really isn’t anything on this level especially consider it as a daily driver which I do
Thanks Tom, The IIHS needs to introduce a visibility rating system to shame automakers into shelving some of the more over-indulged designs plaguing today's cars.
LOFJ, You are right but sports cars like the Camaro have always catered to 'suicidal tendencies' , my worry is the everyday cars with grossly oversized pillars and undersized windows.
Right Lane Hog I couldn’t agree more, as an owner of a McLaren it’s unprecedented the nearly 360° view one has from sitting in the driver seat which really with the glass option is like sitting in a friend of Jen I would imagine it’s truly an experience one will not forget
The 720s actually makes 700 hp on a dyno, so actual numbers are closer to 800 hp after factoring in the 15% conversion. This would be the first vehicle I would buy if I had the budget for a $300k car. Nothing short of a million dollar hypercar is faster than this in a straight line.
you wanna know something incredible, I was literally watching that 918 vs 720s video as you sent this comment. That said, I agree to disagree, I still think the 720s is incredible and my position isnt swayed. It is a hypercar for supercar money. I still have yet to see any video of any stock vehicle under $1million beating the 720s in acceleration runs on the drag strip or on the road. I dont really care about which is faster around a track, bc in a theoretical world where I was a multi-millionare I would still be driving on the road, not a track. The 720s has grip and aerodynamics that still be able to perform well beyond my talent limit, and it would beat any of its competitors on the freeway or at the lights. Also, I don't care about Formula 1 or who makes Mclaren's engines. It's irrelevant to the performance of the car. Is the Huayra any less of a car bc it has a Mercedes engine? No. Same goes for McLaren.
Great journalist driving the greatest sports automative car manufacturer in the world. McLaren a step ahead which is astounding when how long they've been in business. Congrats Tom...
Just seeing the smile it put on your face driving it, and even on mine just watching it! Is what these cars are all about. I love the design of McLarens and their uncanny... German ability (please don't flame me Brits) to balance outlandish with "exact" lines, If that can be said about this aquatic styled machine. Truly a supercar to put on your wall!
@@NiTeHaWKnz exactly that. A surprising amount of time in that test is spent with the engine idling, so start/stop has a big impact on the final economy figure by simply switching the engine off for so much of the test.
I think the Porsche is the logical choice (more practical and probably more reliable), but the Mclaren is more beautiful and has the "correct" number and configuration of cylinders. My opinion likely means little to you because you didn't ask me and I would rather own a Panamera over any 911 which suggests I have a mental illness...
Raised a practical midwesterner, I'm more of a 911 T guy (which is not a beverage). But really, it's a moot point since I can't (or won't) afford either of them after my kitchen remodel.
if anyone buys the turbo s over this, it will be because of price. it won't be because of ride comfort, tech, speed, or design. all of which the 720s has more of over the turbo s.
Aaron Fink who cares about practical and logic when buying a supercar? I know for a fact I would never in a million years pick a hideous turbo s over that gorgeous 720s. Sure the turbo s is amazing to drive blah blah blah but it’s so boring in comparison.. plus the performance of the 720s is leagues above that turbo s. Easy choice for me.
I recently passed a new McClaren stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and zoomed by in the FasTrac lane. Hilarious to see someone in a $300K car going 5mph, but who wouldn't spend the cash to ride in the fast lane.
What a lovely little runabout to take mother shopping in. However, at around US$300 ,plus around 30% for the Australia tax, I might just pass on this. Thanks for the review Tom. Excellent as ever.
300k + 30% luxury tax + GST + dealer delivery + on roads and other govt charges. Don’t forget exchange rate difference...cheapest I have seen is $540,000..if you see a new one drive away for $390k, I’d flip that sucker for a quick 100k profit
People get on about the weirdest things.... Door fitment? It's like people want to drive a seamless bar if soap. Or maybe they just want some thing to bitch about. I have no idea which.
It's a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with those yellowish cones, not cheap Harmon Kardon. At this price, Harmon Kardon would be a deal breaker for audiophiles.
I'm devastated. Was all set to order two (one for months with "r" in the name; the other for the rest) until I discovered no Apple Carplay, no tow rating, no AWD, and no way to access the engine bay without the proprietary dealer tool. Guess my Microsoftie friends and I will have to content ourselves with our Porsche 911RS's, Lamborghini Hurricans, etc.
I'll stick with my p90d ludicrous that does 0-60 in 2.6 with a full bbq grill in the back, and empty front trunk and no gas for less that 1/3 the price :p
Bonzo Bonzai - The McLaren owner could give you a head start, cook a full BBQ, eat it, then still beat you to 170mph. It's a supercar - 0-60mph is just warming up.
I currently own a mclaren720s papaya spark and Lamborghini performante Spyder and color Rosso bia. to be honest with you I have more fun driving my Lamborghini because of the amazing sound. Also there's just something about driving a Lamborghini it feels like a better build quality. There are a lot of electrical quarks on the 720's. Don't get me wrong I like the 720's. It is a great car but that's it it's just a great car. The Lamborghini is an event. It makes its presence known wherever you go. I am going to trade my 720's for McLaren spider hopefully I can hear a little bit more sound with the top down.I know it will not compare to the Lamborghini sound but maybe a little bit more soul and experience to hear that engine note. Where the McLaren is fun is at high speeds then you can hear the turbo whine a bit
Noel Bodie - Ferrari hasn't won an F1 championship in the last decade either. Lamborghini has never won an F1 championship. But comparing road cars, a McLaren can wait for a Ferrari to do a 0 to 60 before launching and still beat the Ferrari to 170mph. It's not doing too bad.
There’s a McLaren dealership now in Bellevue, same building as Lamborghini of Bellevue. Previously you would need to drive up to Vancouver for service or sometimes McLaren techs would fly in to service your car. www.thedrive.com/news/20592/mclaren-bellevue-locks-down-supercar-companys-presence-in-the-pacific-northwest
It looks nice, and I know it drives nice. Couldn't do one of these though. Even if I had the money. Have heard of multiple system failures in many of their products. AC failures, cruise control, navigation? The resale on Mclaren's is terrible. I can actually afford a 12C. I don't want one!
@@andrewpalframan4666 a guy on RU-vid bought a 12c for his business. It was a piece of crap. Another gentleman purchased a 720 and sold it because of system failures. Believe what you want. I can afford a 12C. I won't buy one. If I could afford a 720? I wouldn't buy one
I would bet donuts to dollars that he is in the Discovery Park parking lot nestled next to the Magnolia neighborhood in Seattle (NW Seattle) with a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. Also, there is now a McClaren dealership and service center only 15 miles away from him in Bellevue located just a stones throw away from the original Microsoft campus (duh!). New money from Amazon executives needs to find ways for conspicuous spending...
You win the title of most mistakes and poor review in general - you got the stereo wrong, you claim lack of storage without realising there are auto locking door pockets - you berate the reversing camera while neglecting to mention the awesome 360° reversing camera!! You DID NOT USE launch control or mention how incredible the handling and steering is! How can you criticise class leading frunk space or the class destroying ride comfort and interior quality!! I suggest you watch all the other reviews to see where you contradict EVERYBODY ELSE who rightly think the 720s is a generational leap that is the new benchmark in EVERY SINGLE department!!
