As sedans, hatchbacks and wagons disappear from automaker’s lineups, performance enthusiasts have fewer choices. Ford answers with the Edge ST, a crossover with both zoom and family room. It’s quick, comfortable and corners well, but will it lure drivers into a new form factor? Tom Voelk drives a fully loaded model complete with performance tires and brakes.

Why do auto makers feel the need to come up with special lingo for their safety and AWD systems? Just call them what they are! It’d be like if they called the windshield Air Sentinel 365 with Rain Sabre!

alliejr fair. But calling it Honda Sensing or Pro Pilot Assist doesn’t tell you what it does either. Just call it a driver assistance system. While we’re at it, stop giving the infotainment whackadoo branding as well. Entune, CUE, iDrive, it’s all meaningless.

I purchased the first model year of the EDGE. The interior has not changed, typically FORD. I paid extra for Leather Trimmed seats(FORD's gag for having customers pay for vinyl seats, two small strips on the front seat back were kind of leather). Since it was model year 1, I expected issues. OPEN the hood before taking delivery and the engine compartment was bright GREEN in color - FORD Primer. They forgot to paint the engine bay. That was my 11th new FORD and my last. Been a very happy Honda Pilot, recently added a RIDGE LINE owner since. I owe FORD some thanks for enlightening me to the HONDA brand.

Yup. However, when I was shopping for a crossover last year I was offered a Ford Edge Sport (the predecessor of the ST) for about $9,000 under MSRP. Such a deal is unlikely when a new model is introduced but give it a few months and I suspect the $52K MSRP will be far above "real world" prices.

This is such a nicely put together vehicle. I don't know what all the reviewers are complaining about? Just because it can't go as fast as an BMW M3 or corner like a Miata makes it a bad car?? Seriously, do reviewers even know what kind of vehicle of they are sitting in? This has more power than most of the 3 row SUVs, almost zero compromises on features pack and drives pretty much as you would want it (I mean you want a faster than average SUV, right?), and still everyone making fun of it like Ford promised you a Mustang and delivered an Ecosport?? I mean come on, if this vehicle was anything less than it is supposed to be, I would have agreed on all the negative criticism, but just because it doesn't drive like it's sedan version is a total bummer for me. You want to drive a vehicle that goes like a sedan and corners like that, how about getting one?

The Ford Edge was one of the first SUVs that are extra wide. Sadly now it becomes the norm that some of them take up 1.5 parking spots.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад
I"m not defending the humungous vehicles that Americans typically prefer but the reason that most "midsize" and larger vehicles cannot be fitted into a parking space is that planners are usually required to set aside spaces in lots for a minimum number of vehicles. That's a lot easier to accomplish if nearly all parking spots are designed for "compact" vehicles even though most of the vehicles parked are larger than that. A similar set of planning regulations is typically responsible for setting aside a minimum number of "handicapped" spots in a lot based on the expected customer traffic. Usually that minimum is far more spots than are likely to be used at any single time.
@davidjym
@davidjym 5 лет назад
Interesting perspective. Planners have a really small part in my opinion. First of all, consumers have this mentality that 'BIGGER IS BETTER', so car companies are simply satisfying this demand. At the same time, this is what they are advertising, that their vehicles have the most cargo room and interior volume. Secondly, parking and garage spaces have stayed the same, if not gotten smaller. It's actually not the planners' obligation to increase the parking spaces just because vehicles have gotten so big over the years. If that was the case, then every roadways in the world would need to increase in width, which is impossible. Maybe that's why we have all these 'surround-view cameras' or automatic parking systems, because nobody can see out the corners of the vehicle and park. Take the Toyota RAV4 for example, in just 20 years. It is now bigger than the first generation Highlander. Same goes with our houses keeps getting bigger, but that's another topic.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад
@@davidjym Sorry, David. Perhaps I wasn't clear. There's no question that consumers drive the "bigger is better" phenomenon in America.And that manufacturers respond to those demands. I'm simply noting that zoning regulations typically require commercial developments to provide capacity for a minimum number of vehicles. But allocating space for parking doesn't increase revenue for a developer compared to increasing the footprint of revenue generating space. Furthermore, developers understand that parking spaces closer to a commercial building are more desirable than those farther away. Therefore, there's a strong incentive to make as many parking spaces as possible in order to meet minimum zoning requirements for the number of spaces and to locate the spaces as close as possible to the driver's destination. And that means making the individual spaces smaller and more numerous. Thus, the ubiquitous "compact only" marking on the most desirable (i.e. closest) parking spaces. Finally, this doesn't apply just to building new commercial structures. Several years ago the owner of the parking structure next to my office decided to increase revenue by adding more parking spaces available to the general public rather than just to the occupants of my building. Did he put another story on the structure? Nope. He just re-striped the existing spaces to remove about 10 inches from every space. Magically, he increased the capacity of his parking structure by over 10%. Believe me, I share your distaste for the ever increasing size of passenger vehicles in America. But a 1960 Chevrolet Impala was 80.9" in width. A 2019 Ford Edge is 75.9" wide. We have a considerable distance to go before passenger vehicles in America approach the size they were fifty years ago. The bottom line is that as my daddy used to say to encourage me to buy land, "God ain't making any more real estate." But there are many more cars to fit onto that real estate. And that means less space for every vehicle both on the road and in parking spaces.
@davidjym
@davidjym 5 лет назад
@Stephen Hendricks. Thanks for explaining. Now it makes complete sense especially about the mentality of Developers. On the bright side, this is the reason why we are seeing a new SUB-COMPACT SUV segment and with steady growth in sales, because of the Compact SUVs creeping into Mid-size category. I've heard stories where people buy a vehicle, then realize it wouldn't fit in their garage. Wish more people would be informed about this trend of increasing vehicle size. In the mean time I"ll just keep enjoy driving my Honda Fit and get the closet parking spot :)

In this market I could not find a wagon I liked to replace our aging Saab 9-3 Sport Combi. This is about as close to driving a wagon as I could find in a crossover format. No rolly-polly handling and quick acceleration. It's no Fiesta ST but it's a heck of a lot more fun to drive than any other crossover in the under 65K price range. Yes, although not as nimble feeling, it will smoke a base model 4 cylinder Porsche Macan in a straight line and with a 0.9G rating on the skidpad, give it a run for the money in the corners.

I do love SUV s or CUV s i drive for many many years now and i do understand why ppl do like them so much! If now this Edge is going to compete against all these strong competitors from EU and Japan is more than questionable. In this price range a major role is playing the name and then the designation after it.Almost 50K for an Edge this is more than optimistic thinking and need definitely something more to secure a winning place in the segment.

I envy you, because I'm the complete opposite. I don't really get why people like them. I jumped on getting an SUV as my next car thinking that it would be more convenient for my family life, but now I regret it. Now I have to wait for my lease to expire so I'm bummed. I miss my Accord.
@alexmobil7463
@alexmobil7463 5 лет назад
@@Mushroomancer I think that the pros which SUV s have against normal cars are many more and much more significant than the cons. Every one has his own needs and priorities and for me a four wheel drive system is absolutely a must in a today's car.A 4x4 system is for me a great contribution to a cars active safety so important as a great rear suspension or good brakes and i do not mention front suspension because 99% of cars or trucks have McPherson struts.I wouldn't take i must say every 4x4 system they are not all the same capable but anyway. Many cars have a 4 wheel-drive system but then again i do need a reasonable ground clearance. I do not need that for going off road but this have many pros as well. First the pavement it isnt always in a good condition and i m located in Germany where someone could think that the streets here are in a well shape and good maintained.No this is not the case. Having enough ground clearance with proper high profile tires have save me a lot of money. Higher clearance also offers naturally a higher drivers sitting position that improves a lot the visibility in traffic. Another pro is the easiest entrance in the vehicle. The higher position of the vehicle brings some cons such is the higher center of gravity and the bad aerodynamic which also brings another con and that is the fuel consumption. Fuel consumption all though it isn t such a big issue anymore since the modern technologies have conquered all kind of vehicles even trucks nowadays offer sustainable fuel consumption. Another major issue is versatility. Of course modern cars as you have mention the Accord do offer a remarkable amount of space for passengers and their baggage but really have you seen the CRV?? It does everything better i think, you could even carry your mother in law on her wheel chair! LOL! These are the pros i think that an SUV has against a car! Sorry for writing so much but you ve asked me and i wanted to give somehow a detailed view why i do like SUV`s all the way finally, are the better buy! For me at least.

I grew up a Ford kid. In those days of brand loyalty that rivaled that for baseball teams you chose early and stuck with it. (In my case it was Ford and the Dodgers.) So even many years later, whenever I purchase a new vehicle I check out what Ford has to offer. Last year when my wife and I looked at midsize crossovers it was the Edge Sport, the predecessor of the Edge ST. Ford claims to have made significant changes in the ST compared to the Sport but they're not especially obvious. And as Tom notes, the ST is heavier than the Sport so it suffers a slight deficit in terms of straight line performance while bearing the burden of a price increase of several thousand dollars. And again, as Tom notes, the ST isn't an Alfa Romeo Stelvio or Porsche Cayenne in terms of handling. But at a price in the low $50K range, it's not in the Alfa or Porsche price category, either. I liked the Sport. Attractive (imo). The Sync3 infotainment system is better than average. Comfortable seats. Up to date safety and convenience features.Good interior space and overall cargo capacity. And the 2.7L twin scroll V6 is very impressive. Have to say, though, that the interior was an unexciting 50 Shades of Gray. And the tiny tach stuck on the far left of the instrument cluster hardly proclaims a "Perfornance" suv. If it had been only up to me I might have purchased the Edge. But the family SUV is my wife's daily driver. (I have a GTI.) And she was not as favorably impressed. She noted correctly that the hotrod performance of the Edge isn't a high priority for a vehicle whose main mission was navigating the jungle of surburban traffic and long distance cruising. She wasn't crazy about the steeply raked windshield, either. She said she felt like she was piloting a long boat from the stern. Most importantly, though, was the fact that the Edge didn't offer a stowable third row of seats. The KIA Sorento we bought is almost exactly the same size as the Edge in terms of length, passenger space in the first and second rows, and overall cargo space. But it also provides a usable third row of seating suitable for occasional use. That, combined with other factors such as higher quality interior materials and better fit and finish in the KIA led us to choose it over the Edge.

Ford released pics and specs of the new Focus ST. And of course it won't be offered here 😣😖 About 276hp and something like 310 ft/lbs of torque. From a 2.3L 4 cylinder. 6 speed manual and you can get it in a wagon. The new Escape will be introduced soon. Maybe there will be a ST version? With AWD? 🤔 And Hyundai said there will be more N models. I'm hoping they'll bring over the i30N. But who are we kidding🤣. So maybe a Tucson N? 🤔 With the same engine from the Veloster and i30N and with AWD?
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад
I was disappointed when Hyundai opted to offer the Veloster N rather than the i30N in the US. But Hyundai has apparently decided not to offer both vehicles in any market. The countries that get the Veloster N don't get the i30N and vice versa. I suspect they feel offering both models would cannibalize sales of the higher priced i30N.
@mx5hong
@mx5hong 5 лет назад
@@stephenhendricks103 Yeah, I guess the price delta between the two is too close. The Veloster N is $29K with the performance pack. So if the i30N was offered here, it would have to be priced, let's say $32K or something like that. And if you add the performance pack, then we're at Civic Type R territory.

Because very few people buy manual transmission these days. Ford isn't going to develop one for this car. Too expensive.

@@DrivenCarReviews A shift lever isn't useful only for manual transmissions, Tom. My wife HATES the rotary dial design for any transmission. For me? Not a big deal though I can't understand the great advantage of a rotary or pushbutton gear selector.

That interior looks dated, both gauges and center dash. I take the Jeep Grand Cherokee with a HEMI V8 SRT or regular 5.7 V8 over this front wheel drive raised fusion any day.

the jeep is old as dirt too though, they need to at least ACT like they have updated it.

The Interior in the vehicle is just 3 years old and it’s refreshed. The jeeps interior dates way back to 2011-2013

I've never owned a Jeep product. Too many friends have had reliability problems with the brand and those problems are borne out by more comprehensive surveys of owners. But to be fair one doesn't buy a "brand"; one buys a particular model and there can be huge variance in the reliability of individual models. Furthermore, even less reliable brands these days are extremely reliable compared to vehicles in the past. On the other hand, vehicles are not women's fashions where "dated" designs are inherently superior to "fresh" designs. A reviewer, like any journalist, is apt to highlight changes in design and comment negatively about designs that remain unchanged. That doesn't make changes "better." Unless, of course, like women's fashions being seen in last year's outfit is a sign that one can't afford to keep up with one's peers and that's a source of shame.

Jeff 70 it has the old Honda interior design and it’s just an another crossover. Accord is a dying breed which I prefer over crossovers.

Your dronecam cannot do 60p? As for the porky Edge, Ford just tries to milk the ST badge. Meh.

Maybe they should build a wall around that park in order to keep the people who paid for it out of it.
