Since the 1870’s women have been Driven to Ride… Two-wheeled vehicles gave women a first real taste of the wild thrill found in unfettered mobility. Victorian Age corsets and billowing skirts were set aside as riding unleashed the power hidden within and the freedom to give that power pursuit.
Driven to Ride is a documentary that explores the unstoppable spirit and diversity of women motorcycle riders. Riders featured in the documentary include Betsy Huelskamp, Erin Doherty-Ratay, Masyn Moyer, Janice Ferrante, Debra Conroy and Julie Graff.
Betsy Huelskamp is a personal trainer, photographer and journalist. Betsy has been featured in Discovery Channel’s Motorcycle Women, National Geographic’s Hell on Wheels and TLC’s faking it. Betsy rides over 5,000 miles per year on her custom Harley-Davidson chopper.
Erin Doherty-Ratay is known for her Around-the-World tour with her husband Chris Ratay. Their adventure on two BMW motorcycles took more than four years (1999-2003) and covered 50 countries on six continents, while riding 101,322 miles. At the end of their journey, Erin and Chris discovered they had nearly doubled the record for Longest Motorcycle Ride (Team) and broke the Guinness World Records®.
Masyn Moyer is a free spirited custom Harley-Davison chopper rider and an entrepreneur. Masyn grew up driving tractors and snowmobiles on her grandfather’s farm in Minnesota. Instead of receiving a horse for her 10th birthday present, she received a 50CC dirt bike… the rest is history.
Janice Ferrante rides a BMW 650 GS and lives for off-road riding adventure. When the pavement ends… she begins her ride.
Debra Conroy rides a BMW 1100 S and she thrives on long distance riding. She has been known to attempt to ride 50 Colorado mountain passes in 3 days.
Julie Graff is a custom chopper builder and Julie was born to ride. Both her mother and father are avid vintage Harley Davidson riders and collectors. Julie began to ride at the young age of four and remembers being dropped off at pre- school on her mother’s 1969 Harley Davidson Sportster.
Women continue to shape and push the boundaries of two-wheeled freedom. The call of the road stirs in their blood. A call they answer down a thousand Interstates, and black-tops, and dusty country roads. Highways and byways that sail past in the raw sweep of wide-open spaces. Women climb aboard and tear off - embracing the wild exhilaration of acceleration…Driven to Ride.

I get the feeling these women are proud that they are women riders. I didn't know we were suppose to look at women riders any differently, glad I got that figured out. I live in a little Utah town when I was kid I worked for 70 something year old woman who sold firewood for living. Would go out every Saturday morning at 8 am all winter long and we would split wood all day, load 5 cords and she'd deliver it herself Monday. She never complained never bragged. Was tough as nails. Knew few old women like her in town, truck drivers, miners. They never believed what they did was special. It was just something they had to do. These women are good bikers and I respect them for that just as I would any guy that can ride that hard. See ya at the dungeon bar

Well done video! Really enjoyed your stories. I agree riding is about the experiences, the stories and the people you meet along the way. It's a way of life like no other, the freedom ... no walls, no windows just air and that feeling when you have that perfect day. Much respect, ride on ladies!

They can be a lot of fun. Grocery getter, parts runner, parades, entertaining the neighborhood. It's all good. The unmolested bikes have a large cargo trunk in the back (1/4 ton capacity) and often a tow bar to pull it behind a vehicle. Many are restored in their original police or fire configuration.

Why is it that girls need to be applauded for doing something that men have been doing (without the fanfare) for a hundred years. Ride your bike, enjoy it, and SHUT UP about it.

A lot of women experience extreme judgement, sexism and harassment for just being a woman still even in 2020. Riding is fearful because of this. So, the encouragement is nice and to come across videos like this.

I'm 5' 4", and ride a Dyne Wide Glide. With my girl as a passenger (she's 6'6") she holds us up at stops. I do wear platform shoes to seem taller, and that gets me into an occasional bar fight. That, and when I drink, I can be difficult at times. Anyway, Luwanda has saved me from a couple of pummelings, for sure. You gals got my respect!!

I applaud anyone who rides... but one question. Of the women riders I see profiles on these RU-vid videos, not very many wear effective motorcycle gear. The woman in this video who crashed in Malaysia tells (and shows) how a good helmet and good riding gear protected her from significant injury... and yet you've got these other riders wearing tank tops and bandannas... and no gloves. Ride your own ride, sure... but I feel too many riders, including many women, feel they have something to prove and thus needlessly put their lives at risk by not gearing up. Stay safe.

fI'm not much on the dual sport stuff...but the fine ladies riding the fine choppers are great. Freedom is just that, freedom to ride your way, with whatever you want to ride, wear, or don't wear (geez, I hate crossing states with helmet laws! haha!) ride on, ladies - see ya at a HOG rally maybe.
@lucyferina
@lucyferina 7 лет назад
My 2 cents: it is a personal choice to wear the gear, but should you choose not to wear it, don't complain when you get hurt. The second thing I see a lot of riders do is forget to turn off their turn signals, I feel that everyone shoul be very aware of their signals and avoid being cut off by a driver who thought you were turning. More courses should teach that.
