Driver dies after tractor-trailer goes over the side of the CBBT 

People who don’t drive trucks will never understand how dangerous this job is. Especially in high wind or blizzard conditions.

As a trucker for 2+ decades myself,winds scare me more than any other weather.Once you're out in the wind, there's no getting away from it.

OMG that must have been horrific. It looked like a freezing cold day. Looking at those waves makes me feel sick. My heart really goes out to him and his loved ones.😥

He was from Greenville NC, a real good guy. The motorcycle club here got together to raise money for the family. May he RIP.... to all you truckers, people need too respect you guys more. They don’t realize that when we go to the grocery store or need essentials in everyday life (all truckers included ) that when we ask store clerks and they say... the truck hasn’t arrived yet..then we should stop and think, that we need you guys. Please stay safe out there

I have been driving a truck for quite a few years. I still don't like crossing bridges like that at night. Water on both side as black as can be with only the moonlight shinning on the water. It's quite eerie looking. RIP driver. To all the other drivers out there stay safe!

I had crossed that bridge countless times. I can tell y'all that every time that I went over it, it felt as if my soul was about to leave my body; I'd unstrap my seatbelt, ready to jump off my truck. I actually spoke to that driver's brother, and he's the one who told me about this accident. So so sad!

I drove a fusion over this bridge one night wasn't that windy and I had such difficult time. When he went over I knew I had reason to worry. May his soul rest in peace.

The regular joe don't have any idea what truck drivers have to put up with government regulations you have to keep track of every minute of your life you can only drive so long very hard to find parking places the people that make the rules have never drove a truck that's y you see signs everywhere wanting help .

That's sad he passed away you would think of a bridge over water they would have made it a tunnel bridge that way there is protection all around instead of some rail just saying

I have a tremendous respect and appreciation for the job that truckers do. So sorry for the likely frightening death of this young driver.

When I used to drive "wiggle wagons ", certain parts of the country have road tilted down on the right side, instead of up on a left hand curve. Couple that with a cross wind, it would scare the crap outta me !!!!...Expected a rollover at any time...

I say every trucker has to carry a survival kit in the cab of some sort. Like a floatation bed or something quick to be able to survive being in water

I worked on a tunnel project under the Severn & Wye Rivers UK, there's a suspension bridge crossing the Severn and one day while driving a 7 ton flat bed truck loaded with steel. I was asked to pair drive over the bridge alongside a high sided van loaded machine parts. Even though the van carried three quarters of it's allowed weight this was not enough to hold it down. My being beside him cut the wind to half the height of his truck, but we both could feel the wind as we crossed and made it safely to the other side. The truck driver thanked me and later I received a dinner for two voucher and letter from his company thanking me for my efforts.

That bridge is Unsafe...Period. Guard rails are supposed to guard against vehicles going over...especially on a water bridge...Seems that those guard rails wouldnt prevent anything from going over

Tydings bridge over the Susquehanna river on I95 is another one with strong crosswinds as well. The wind will grab your truck and shake it up and down- talk about “white knuckle moments” a real ass clincher

Keep building short weak guardrails and this will never end.The technology we have they can build rails tall enough to contain our trucks from flipping over there rails.Ive drove truck since 1985 and I've been blessed so far.So sad. Condolences to the family.

I’ve been on this bridge a couple times. I didn’t think anything of it. But I’m also a flatbed driver so that could be the difference.

I don't want anyone to risk their life like that to deliver something.

I drive this at least 3 times a month taking meat loads south from Accomac and Georgetown, almost always in the dead of night. It's fucking eerie. Only 6-8 more months and then I'm done, this trucker life is not a life at all.

What a horrific incident! Truly tragic for the Driver to have survived the crash, fall, impact and submersion, only to die en route to the hospital it the Rescue Helicopter!

What a disgrace for bridge that is. Who builds and designs these god forsaken things anyway? You can’t have a railguard higher than that? My sympathies for the driver and respect to all those who drive trucks and deliver our goods. It’s a tough job to say the least.

These trucks need to have they own lane’s, these are just major accidents wanting to happen to mid size cars, example two mid size cars stop at a red light on a highway, they sitting there no idea that the semi truck can’t stop on breaks or jack knife sliding side ways down the lane they are in!!! You know how much pressure/ weight that truck is about to smack the back of them cars smh!! Accidents waiting to happen they need they own lane’s!! It will help save lives definitely lives that are makeing sure they are driving safely & follow the law on the road..

Ironic carrying seafood, crashes into the sea, and then becomes seafood. Man, what a world we live in. Big mistake trying to go down with the ship too. Hell, Navy Captains are even too yellow to do that nowadays.

I can’t believe something that heavy like the trailer didn’t just fill up with water and sink, but still floating after 2 miles is unbelievable!

The waves were near impossible to overcome. That bridge is extremely dangerous.

Terrible.Nearly happened to me .Was coupling up to a trailer at dover and despite putting on trailer brake it started moving back towards waters edge.I nearly jumped out cab to save myself in case the whole lot went over the quay.

The trucking company should be responsible for such things , you say "I can't" company says "you work or look for another job" , they push drivers , nearly all the companies do that

Just drove over this bridge at night. It is the longest bridge I’ve ever ever been on in my life in a semi truck. The tunnels are 13 6 in height and it’s tight. In high winds I wouldn’t dare cross this bridge in a semi. I see why trucks go over and into the ocean. The guard rails don’t guard shit. Good experience though. I survived!!!
