Driver risks lorry collision after ignoring Red X

A car narrowly avoids a collision with a lorry as the driver changes lanes on the M60 near Whitefield. The vehicle had been travelling along a lane closed by a red X and moved over just seconds before reaching two Highways England traffic officers who were dealing with a broken-down car by the central reservation. Tips on staying safe on motorways are available at www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-drive-on-a-smart-motorway.

To be fair, how was he supposed to safely change lanes when all of the traffic in the other lanes was ignoring the 2-second rule? Utter morons

Variable speed limits *can* be beneficial. If implemented correctly. In any case, each consecutive sign should have a lower and lower limit, in increments of 10mph, so drivers only slow a bit with every sign they pass. Eg, if a section of road needs to be 40mph, the three preceeding signs should be 70, 60, 50, until they get to the actual 40mph one. This means people don't have to slam on the brakes because of the dangers of getting a speeding ticket. Alternatively, make it so that speed cameras are forbidden on smart motorways, so if a driver see's a speed decrease too late, they aren't forced to slam on the brakes, and can safely decrease speed over a great distance by letting off the throttle instead of braking. Finally, the hard shoulder *must remain free*. It should be used solely for emergency services, and breakdown situations, or medical reasons if someone needs to stop because they're incapable of safely driving due to severe migraine etc.. A broken down car stuck on a live lane is a death waiting to happen. Hazard lights aren't enough warning at motorway speeds, especially on modern cars with tiny indicators.
@hugocatt867
@hugocatt867 4 года назад
Dan Coulson I do believe that the limits change down incrementally, 60 50 40 with each sign. I suppose unless the hazard is already directly in front of you the nearest sign would change to 40 but signs further back will be increments.

This is all a trap they know its going to kill people and make loads of money by speed cameras, the word " smart" is because its a smart way for them to make money and down the population. Otherwise nobody would takeaway the hard shoulder and have no safety! Same with are "smart" phones they have all information about you and record what you like, what you dislike, what porn you watch, back in the day they would of had to arrest you to get information off you like this!! Welcome the smart way they use the technology against us.

@@freshprince8484 it makes sense that they'd wanna make money from the speed cameras, but I don't understand why they'd close the hard shoulder and make it a live lane permanently (in some cases)? It's just so dangerous. Surely they can have the newer cameras and get more money via speeding tickets whilst still having a hard shoulder?
@kal9001
@kal9001 3 года назад
@@noneofyobusiness9794 It's to increase capacity. An extra lane in theory adds 33% more capacity. It's less in practice as the'll be more lane changing with reduces efficiency, but still. It's an extra lane that can be used safely for traffic if drivers obey the signs, and if the highways controllers were more responsive. Unless reactions times to stranded vehicles are less than a minute then they shouldn't have used the system. That said, it's a sad state of affairs when you can't actually trust a driver to see a fully stationary vehicle dead ahead of them -_-

So there is a hard shoulder on the left but clearly made no difference for this situation in the far right lane did it? The biggest improvement would be drivers take a free course every 5 years on the motorway to keep updated with how the new improved tech works and how to drive properly.

That's the main problem with Smart Motorways. Your fully reliant on people doing what they are supposed to do. There will always be people that will either ignore signs/rules and do what. Hard shoulders are life savers. Smart Motorways save nothing. Extra/more lanes will never reduce traffic.

Removing the hard shoulder was the dumbest move ever by this body. They also should train their controllers to turn the signs off when no longer needed and as someone already mentioned to lower and increase the speed on each sign by 10mph so gradually decreasing or increasing the speed limit. Common sense is dead though.

Wow. Though of course he shouldn't have been in a lane with a red X, perhaps he couldn't change lanes as those cars are way too bunched up and blatantly ignoring the 2-second rule, but obviously if there was a hard shoulder, the car that was broken down might have been able to crawl to it

There would of been quite a few red x signs and get over arrows before the r x signs these are purely drivers who believe they shit unicorn dust and can do what the fk they like , as a truck driver makes my blood boil , folk wouldn't constantly run a red stop light yet they will casually drive through red x signs , more fines and points need to be issued especially the last red x before the scene

@@richardskeggs3726 Happens a lot that cars suddenly bunch up when the speed limit is less than 70, instead of leaving a decent gap. Makes it so hard to move over. I was actually helping traffic that had that very problem only recently and some knobhead driver subsequently tailgated me when we started moving faster (I slowed down then, as the theory test suggests, to increase the gap between me and the vehicle in front) and when the muppet could go into a different lane, he shouted abuse. For what? Helping drivers, including truckers who had nowhere near a big enough gap behind me? For leaving plenty of space between myself and other vehicles? For following the advice on the theory test about increasing the gap between me and the vehicle in front if tailgated? I even have stickers on my car warning exactly what I'll do, but too many muppets don't heed them.
