Driver sentenced to 27 years after fatally striking NYPD detective 

It does not matter if the victim is a cop, janitor or doctor .Don't drink and drive. Period.

Now, if prosecutors and judges will start prosecuting crimes against regular citizens this harshly, maybe things will slowly start to turn around.

Interesting how crimes against officers get the full sentence, but crimes against civilians often get slaps on wrists

She thought she was going to get off by checking boxes. She was trying to get extra points going to 'classes'. That bible and rosary were simply props. Not a single tear and she can see her family on visiting days. She had more time with her kids than the officer had with his. I'm sure she did a stellar job with the vitriol she has spewed through the media. What a show of support from other officers. That should have chilled her to the bone.

When it comes to cops being the victim, the justice system comes down hard on the person, that hurt or killed them. But yet when it comes to citizens being the victims, most of the time they don't receive the justice they deserve. judge's rarely come down so hard with that same conviction, with a stern tone and revenge in their eyes.

That seems like a pretty harsh sentence....I wonder if she would of gotten taht sentence if he wasn't a cop and just a normal civilian?

I am not defending the girl when I say this what she did was tragically wrong it cost someone their lives for her stupidity. But what I want to know is when a police officers does the very same thing hit and run and driving under the influence of alcohol and kill somebody how come they get less time. Somehow nothing seems to align with this I don't understand how a cop can get less time than an average citizen when they were representing the cities and states in town but they would only get 6 years cops who were drunk driving and hit somebody didn't get that much time. No I'm okay with the time that they have given this girl but I'm not okay with the time they give police officers when they commit the very same crime.

She should have taken the 16 years, but 27 years is doable. Commissary, tablet, cable, working out, playing cards, visits, etc. I did 27 years, 5 months and 4 days. Living my best life now.

I find it disgusting that they allowed that many cops in the courtroom. They always show this kind of force unfortunately for us, though a cop never gets the full measure of the law when he ends one of us and then Gets caught joking about it while on a recorded line.. he gets away with it because it’s called banter, but this young lady gets to spend the next 20 or 30 years in jail while so many cops in the lives of normal citizens, and get away with it daily.. over 60% of Americans have distain for police well I guess to them that’s a crime too Worth mentioning..

What's sad is that the officer needed to pass away for a criminal to be sentenced to prison. In SF, one of the smash and grab criminals was being chased by police, he drove over one of their feet and tried to swerve to intentionally hit the officer and he crashed into a parked car before running and the cops caught him. During the trial, (I think it was 7 felonies)all the felony charges such as hit&run, attempted murder with a vehicle, etc were all reduced to only two misdemeanors and he was released the next day.

This has been happening all over . Same thing on an Ohio highway. Driver ran over a firefighter responding to another accident and killed him and took off like nothing happened. Sentenced him also to a lot of time.
