According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, more than 37,000 people die in road crashes each year in the United States. Jim discusses disruptive transportation technologies and highlight how the Intelligent Transportation Systems industry is working toward developing technology that may eliminate this risk and save lives.
Jim Barbaresso is an internationally renowned expert in intelligent transportation systems. He has more than 37 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, giving him a unique perspective on transportation challenges and how to overcome them. Throughout his career, Jim has demonstrated leadership in the development and application of emerging technologies to enhance mobility and transportation safety. In recognition of Jim's career achievements and leadership in Intelligent Transportation Systems, he was selected to chair the 2014 World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, held last September in Detroit.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I got the chance to present along with Jim. His passion is contagious and his vision for safer roads is very real. With leaders like him helping create advances in technology, we are in good hands.

So, you have given up on any individual to correcting their driving habits?
@calorus
@calorus 6 лет назад
It doesn't matter if any individual does. You'd need all individuals to, and to maintain that improvement, and never to err or get tired or hurried.

we are in no hands, i for one could never trust a vehicle being driven without a conscience, no matter how good the technology.

I love to drive. Will never give up the freedom and fun that driving gives me. Been driving for 42 years and no accidents. Big cities can have them. Us in rural America and small cities don't need them.

At some point, a Ban on owner car's will probably be put in place with a time limit to change out you owner-driven car for a self-driven one.

Mark Bjering That's wishful thinking. While self-driving cars are inevitable, it likely won't catch on for at least another century or so since we don't yet have the technology for cars to be _fully_ autonomous. That is, where the car can literally drive itself WITHOUT having a person at the wheel in case something goes wrong.
@Favorline
@Favorline 6 лет назад
Guildrich I think inside 5-10 years they have the cars working as intended where they are better drivers then a guy or girl behind the wheel. Then it's just a matter of time until many normal cars are off the road before there will be put a ban in place. since it is safer in an automated car. They already have a self driving car on the road that has driven 2million miles with no accident or driver help. be yes with a driver behind the wheel since it's still against to law to have a fully automated car with no driver behind the wheel in case something should go wrong. So they are close. they need some changes to the laws regarding allowing them to drive on their own with no wheel. or driver behind it.

DonQuinoa Many things can change, not only autonomous vehicles, can you imagine a autonomous cars and smart roads without signs and less roads and more free spaces etc..

the prince I guess, if you can spend your time doing other productive stuff in your car, watching TV, doing some work or mess with your smartphone/tablet playing video games, eating, sleeping etc etc.

Taxies will go instinct sorry to say when these cars go on the road. but one thing I have been wondering. if it is going to be a shared car. who pays for the cars others can use also? I don't want to pay for a car an unlimited other people can use. so it is probably going to the car companies who rent them out while you're in the car. and you have to pay for it like you do now in taxies. and I see that kinda as a bad thing. unless it is really cheap. but people want to earn money so I guess it's not going to be cheap. I want automated cars. but I don't want to pay to sit in one at a price of a taxi. so hope people are able to buy them for them self. and not at a sky-high price. witch it probably also will be. with all that new tech.

While I'm excited about the possibilitie)s of driverless vehicles, I keep ending up with the conclusion that its like an advanced system of mass rapid transit. And not that there's anything wrong with that (especially in high density urban areas and their nearby suburbs) but there will be a big cultural shift required in extra-urban areas. Come to think of it, its not the technology that will slow this evolution down - and not even the infrastructure issues that will be costly and time-consuming, but changing the mind-set of commuters will be the biggest challenge.
@Favorline
@Favorline 6 лет назад
People will get used to it like that have done with so many other things. it's new and scary for some yes. but when many start seeing how good it is if no problems arise they will change their minds. most will.

Mark Bjering So should we just adopt every single new idea and technology that comes along without giving it a second thought? Change isn't _always_ good, you know.
@Favorline
@Favorline 6 лет назад
Guildrich I agree we should not just adopt every new technology that comes along. But self-driving cars would be electric one majore+ They would be safer again a + they get rid of assholes on the road. again a + They make traffic run smoother when everything is made self-driving. + I could go on. Downsides. A lot of people would lose their jobs. Can be hacked easier. but would say most new cars today can be hacked. so kinda not a downside when I already exist with new cars today that are not self-driving cars. But I would guess people would lose their jobs at some point unless you want machines in the factory the be removed also? you can add to downsides if I missed something.

depends on if there are so many self-driving cars on the road and only 5-15% owner-driven cars left. a ban of those cars with a time limit to change to the Self-driving car will be set in motions I guess. if not even before

It's my humble opinion that Self-Driving Cars Will NOT Transform Our Lives as much as the MECHANICAL EQUIVALENT OF THE INTERNET IN TRANSPORTATION Why people are stuck to the car. Can't they learn from the magical INTERNET. Thinking of driverless cars and the likes is like thinking of the telegraph/telegram (or the typewriter) and how to improve it. THEY ARE GONE. We must not need cars for 'earthly' transportation. What we need is the DOOR to DOOR, MECHANICAL EQUIVALENT OF THE INTERNET IN TRANSPORTATION, to change the world and our lives as much as the magical INTERNET did. It is feasible. An architecturally friendly to the environment system of posts and cables (or even rails) going through EVERY STREET will be required, for pollution free electromechanically driven carts to slide. A conceptually new, really big forward step in the movement of people and goods, of the caliper of the INTERNET.
@spirgtudsrubec7776

actually the internet is killing us magically, slowly with radiation.
