Amazing video. At 18 mins and 7 secs. I used to stand on that footbridge at Vale Rd in Northfleet as a child in the 1970's, waving to the drivers. My parents old house is clearly visible. So many great memories of those times

58 years ago i used to cross that footbridge at 45:43 every day walking to and from school.... the only thing that's changed is the antivandal netting. Wonderful video and interesting routing.

How wonderful it was to enjoy a virtual rail tour through my county of birth. A lot has changed in the forty plus years since I moved away, and yet after spotting a field of hops, a couple of oast houses and some brilliant white chalk quarry faces in your video I felt right at home. Thank you, if you look at a map you’ll see that the line is straight from Redhill as it was the original mainline built by the South Eastern Railway. The mainline from Sevenoaks was built later.

Great video, I noticed an old style WHISTLE sign at 2:19:10 very surprised to see on still standing, when were they superseded by the W signs and as the driver didn't blow the horn, maybe it shouldn't be still up.

Got to agree with Don, the video is superbly clear and the graphics don't overwhelm. I love Don's videos but sometimes I think there is a bit too much information, which detracts from the running picture. (Not a complaint by the way, Don is superb and works so hard on his vids). I love this area of Kent etc and Freight Trains are my favourite so I really enjoyed this and have obviously subscribed. Thank you.

I'm in Louisiana in the US. I take it that this is an electric-powered freight train with third rail powering since it makes no stops. Loved the trip. Beautiful countryside. 😃

Thank you, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. The locomotive is a Class 66 which has a diesel engine powering electric traction motors. Doesn’t take any juice from the 3rd Rail. They were built in Canada.

I agree with other posters about the excellent quality of this video. I don't know if you are looking for suggestions for other routes in this area, but there is a freight train which leaves Dollands Moor nearly every weekday morning en-route for Daventry via Willesden. I would enjoy seeing the route from the Channel tunnel through London to Willesden, and the only duplication to this video would be the couple of miles through Ashford station.

Thank you, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. The train needed to arrive at an engineering possession with the loco and wagons facing in a certain direction. Its a lot easier to just route the train around in a big circle (as it was booked to return to Hoo Junction later that evening) then it is to run the loco around the train. The train was carrying new ballast as a section of track on the opposite line was being renewed. If the train had arrived on the wrong line then there may not be any track for it to run on.

I see that around 2:07:50 there is a maintenance train running off the third rail. Although I am assuming that the vehicle gets its power from more than one source and hence wouldn't require the third rail for power when it is being stabled, is it common for trains other than those carrying passengers to use the third rail? Are there any freight trains that use it?

What you saw was a Class 73 which uses the 3rd rail and also has a Diesel engine for non 3rd rail lines.

Thank you. The box is disused I believe. At best it might get used for storage from the yard. Movement’s into and out of the yard are now controlled by Three Bridges ROC.

Thank you. The route diagram was created on a piece of software called Davinci Resolve. Funny enough the 20 seconds of animation took me longer to make then the rest of the video.

Thank you, The train had to arrive at the worksite on the opposite track to where the work was being carried out. It makes it easier for the wagons to be unloaded.

Nice one. Thanks. However colors are not as natural as they could be. Perhaps you should play with camera settings and find a netter configuration of brightness and that red-yellow-orange-warm spectrum. Video will get on quality. In my opinion.

I'm curious as to where that train was going. There's nothing at Canterbury West that would accept a long aggregate train, as far as I remember (the mines and quarries round Sturry, a few miles past Canterbury West, are all closed now, I believe, and their sidings removed), and apart from an aggregate plant round Minster/Ramsgate, there seems to be nowhere else. Perhaps it was just a sightseeing excusion?

Very interesting. i'm new to this 'game' and was wondering if someone could tell me why the third-rail (?), which I assume is an electrical pickup, swaps from side to side. I wondered if it was to even out wear but the lengths seemed random so ..... ?

You are right the rail switches from side to side to try and even out the wear, Gaps are provided for pointwork, crossings and electrical gaps between the substations but I’m not sure if it is random, or planned. I have seen the rail swapped over during track replacement so who knows.

That’s a long way round to get to Canterbury from Hoo. Probably a good reason…so why not go via the Medway Towns and get there in minutes?

Thank you, the speeds mentioned on screen are the maximum permanent speeds for all traction, i thought that I may start to confuse people if I posted the current speed of the train. Your right the service filmed was a class 6 freight so top speed was 60mph. The tonnage was around 1800-2000 tons of ballast for a track renewal at Minster.

Hoo Junction to Canterbury West is just 45 miles via the M2 motorway. According to Google Maps you can drive that distance by car in 41 minutes. But if I go by train NOW (Sunday evening 23.30hrs ) Google says it will take me 6 hours & 8 mins, with 3 changes necessary !! Probably be almost as quick to walk ! So where was that freight train going ?

The train was heading to a possession which required it to arrive on a certain line. The track was being renewed on the opposite line. It’s usually easier to route engineering trains round in big circles then arranging for locos to be run round the train on route.
